You may wish to make use of a 'Dates' tab in edit mode that will help with unlinking unnecessary date links. Simply copy the entire contents of User:Bobblewik/monobook.js to your own monobook. Then follow the instructions in your monobook to clear the cache (i.e. press Ctrl-Shift-R in Firefox, or Ctrl-F5 in IE) before it will work. It also provides a 'Units' tab. The reason it fails is because you refer to User:Hmains/monobook.js/dates.js and User:Hmains/monobook.js/unitformatter.js and these articles do not exist. You have two options:

• Option 1. As described in the first 4 sentences above, make your monobook identical to mine. Then it will use the existing articles User:Bobblewik/monobook.js/dates.js and User:Bobblewik/monobook.js/unitformatter.js.
• Option 2. As described in the last 2 sentences, create your own subfiles User:Hmains/monobook.js/dates.js and User:Hmains/monobook.js/unitformatter.js by copying the details from User:Bobblewik/monobook.js/dates.js and User:Bobblewik/monobook.js/unitformatter.js.

Hi! I've written a bunch of articles about islands in northern California, and have made a few categories for specific geographic areas (i.e. Category:Islands of the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta‎, Category:Islands of Suisun Bay). Anyway, so all of these new watershed-based categories are children of Category:Islands of Northern California. I notice that when you made that category, you made it non-diffusing (i.e. it would include all the members of Category:Islands of Santa Clara County, California‎, Islands of San Joaquin County, California‎, etc). This seems like it makes sense to me when all the subcategories are for counties (by-county categories are only useful for certain use cases), but I can't help but think it a little unwieldly to have all 39 members of Category:Islands of the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta‎ all show up in the main category (especially since that category is a child of the norcal islands category anyway). While I would normally just be bold and edit the main cat to make it no longer carry the non-diffusing templates, I must confess that categorization is a complex topic, so I could very well be doing something stupid; so, since you were the one who made it that way in the first place, does this seem like a good idea to you? Is it possible to have it be non-diffusing for the county categories and diffusing for the bays? (for added complexity, some islands in the Sacramento-San Joaquin delta are part of the Bay area, some aren't, etc). Basically what I'm trying to say is I am perplexed here and maybe you can tell me something that makes sense. jp×g 16:06, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The purpose of non-diffusing categories is to have one place where readers can find all the articles about subject without having to wade through subcategories one by one to find something. So subcategories serve readers who want to know only about the subject of the subcategory and all-included categories serve another set of readers; they complement each other. There is no fear of having too many articles in a particular category; dozens or hundreds of articles can appear in a single category; there is no standard of a limiting number--content all depends on the category subject and how the category helps readers to navigate to articles, the sole purpose of categories. In this particular case, we can create a sub-category for islands by county in Northern California and if necessary another for islands by bays in Northern California while repopulating Category:Islands of Northern California so that it again contains ALL such islands without exception.
