Moana is an upcoming American animated film directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. Dwayne Johnson provides the lead voice. The film is scheduled for a November 23, 2016 release.

Plot

In the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania, a born navigator, Moana, sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her journey, she teams up with her hero, the legendary demi-god, Maui.

Cast

Production

Ron Clements and John Musker are working on a computer-animated musical film, Moana, set in Polynesia.[2] The film is expected to be released in 2018.[3][4] It is described as a "mythic adventure set around 2000 years ago and across a series of islands in the South Pacific."[5] The main character is to be Moana Waialiki, a sea-voyaging enthusiast and the only daughter of a chief in a long line of navigators. When her family needs her help, she sets off on an epic journey. The film is to include demi-gods and spirits taken from Polynesian mythology.[5] The music for the film is to be composed by Mark Mancina[6] and arranged by Dave Metzger.[4]

After directing The Princess and the Frog, Clements and Musker started working on an adaptation of Terry Pratchett's Mort,[7] but rights problems prevented them from continuing with the project.[8] To avoid similar problems, they pitched three new ideas, and in 2011 started developing the film based on an original idea.[8]

Moana will be Clements and Musker's first computer-animated film.[2] Although initially rumoured to be made in the hand-drawn/computer-animated technique introduced with Disney's short film Paperman, Musker said that it is "far too early to apply the Paperman hybrid technique to a feature. The Meander digital in-betweening interface still has a host of production issues (including color) that need to be perfected."[2] According to Bleeding Cool, the film will feature a new, painterly style of CG.[7] In October 2014, Musker said, "Moana is indomitable, passionate and a dreamer with a unique connection to the ocean itself, She's the kind of character we all root for, and we can't wait to introduce her to audiences." and Clements also added, "Creating 'Moana' is one of the great thrills of our career."[9]

Casting

On December 3, 2014, Dwayne Johnson was in talks to voice Maui, the legendary demi-god who aids a young girl on a nautical adventure.[10] Later on April 1, 2015, Johnson revealed on Instagram that he had signed on to star in the film.[11][12]

Release

On October 20, 2014, Disney confirmed to release the film in late 2016,[13] which might be the November 23, 2016 spot, which Disney set in March 2014 and revealed as untitled film.[9] On November 10, Disney confirmed to release the film on November 23, 2016.[14]
