Description
The status of hyperaccumulators (plants with heavy metal levels exceeding 1000 μg/g in dried leaves) of copper and cobalt is reviewed and fresh data presented. Hyperaccumulators are confined exclusively to the Copper Belt of Zaïre/Zambia and number 15 cobaltophytes and 12 cuprophytes. Confinement of these taxa to the Copper Belt is presumed to be due to the large area of this metallogenic province compared with copper/cobalt occurrences elsewhere so that a multiplicity of metal-accumulating species have evolved in the course of time. Most of the hyperaccumulators belong to advanced families such as the Labiatae and Scrophulariaceae.
