The Delphian School is a pre-K-12 private school located in a rural setting in unincorporated Yamhill County, Oregon, near Sheridan.[3][4][5] The school operates primarily as a boarding school, with most students living on campus either full-time or five-day (going home for the weekends). The school also accepts day students; boarders must be at least eight years old, while day students can be as young as five.[11]

History

The grounds of the school were formerly a Jesuit novitiate,[6] and in 1976, The Delphian School was established at the site.[7] Tuition at the school was $4,500 for boarding students and $2,800 for non-boarders in 1978.[7] In the 1980s the campus was a candidate for the location of a federal prison, with the Federal Correctional Institution - Sheridan later built elsewhere in the Sheridan area.[8]

Academics

Delphian School is a member of the Oregon Federation of Independent Schools,[9] an accredited member of the Northwest Association of Independent Schools, or NWAIS (formerly the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools), and an accredited member school of the Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC).[1]

The school is operated by Delphi Schools using L. Ron Hubbard's study techniques as published by Heron Books. The Study Tech teaching methodology is licensed through the Scientology-related group Applied Scholastics.

The school building houses the offices of Delphi Schools and Heron Books.[5][6] The main building on campus is a four-story, Art Deco style building with a brick exterior.[10] Designed by Poole & Mcgonigle, it was built in 1933 for the Jesuit house.[10]

Culture

Lauren Haggis, a daughter of Paul Haggis, said that Delphian is "on top of a hill in the middle of nowhere" and that she "lived in a giant bubble. Everyone I knew was a Scientologist."[5]
