The Pop Music Portal

Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form during the mid-1950s in the United States and the United Kingdom. During the 1950s and 1960s, pop music encompassed rock and roll and the youth-oriented styles it influenced. Rock and pop music remained roughly synonymous until the late 1960s, after which pop became associated with music that was more commercial, ephemeral, and accessible.

Identifying factors of pop music usually include repeated choruses and hooks, short to medium-length songs written in a basic format (often the verse–chorus structure), and rhythms or tempos that can be easily danced to. Much of pop music also borrows elements from other styles such as rock, urban, dance, Latin, and country. (Full article...)

1989 is the fifth studio album by the American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, released on October 27, 2014, by Big Machine Records. Inspired by 1980s synth-pop, Swift conceived 1989 to recalibrate her artistry to pop after critics disputed her status as a country musician when she released the cross-genre Red (2012) to country radio. She titled 1989 after her birth year as a symbolic artistic rebirth and enlisted Max Martin, who produced Red's electronic-influenced pop tracks, as co-executive producer.

Swift recorded 1989 at studios across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Sweden with an ensemble including Martin, Shellback, Jack Antonoff, Ryan Tedder, Nathan Chapman, and Imogen Heap. The synth-pop production is characterized by pulsing synthesizers, programmed drum machines, and processed backing vocals with electronic elements, a stark contrast to the acoustic arrangements of Swift's past albums. The songs expand on Swift's autobiographical songwriting and explore failed romance from a lighthearted perspective. (Full article...)

"Boy Oh Boy" is a song recorded by Romanian singer Alexandra Stan for her fourth studio album, Mami (2018). It was digitally released on 30 June 2017 through Alexandra Stan Records, her own label, due to the singer's desire to work independently. The track was written by Andy Grasu, Marius Mirică and Stan, while production was handled by Mirică and Stan. Musically, "Boy Oh Boy" is a 90s-influenced electropop song with dancehall and reggae elements revolving around a girl's need to be loved and Stan's volatile relationship with her partner.

Music critics were positive towards "Boy Oh Boy", praising its vibe and summery style. An accompanying music video for the track was uploaded onto Stan's official YouTube channel simultaneously with the single's release. Shot by Bogdan Păun in Kuala Lumpur, it features Stan walking through the city and a food warehouse. She confessed that she wanted to capture Asian culture in the video. (Full article...)
