New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022[edit]

Wikipedia New page reviewer.svg
New Page Review queue March 2022

Hello Gobonobo,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 733 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 1034 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

Failed verification[edit]

Hi Gobonobo, can you explain this edit? -- Kautilya3 (talk) 18:13, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Also an explanation of why you keep adding "Islamic prophet"? Did you see any RS do it? -- Kautilya3 (talk) 18:26, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kautilya3: Sure. The Siasat Daily article did seem to verify the facts presented in the sentence, so I removed the failed verification tag. The Businessline article doesn't describe Sharma as "young, energetic and brash". Rather it says she is "Combative, ambitious and action-oriented". So I placed a failed verification tag there. I'd prefer to remove the sentence entirely, as it doesn't seem to convey important information and is less than encyclopedic in tone. gobonobo + c 18:28, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There is no mention of Aisha or the marriage of Muhammad in the Siasat source. On the other hand, the tag you added was for a source that had equivalent descriptions and content that justified the descriptions. There is nothing non-encyclopaedic about describing the character of a person in his/her biography, as long as it is well-sourced and neutrally worded. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 19:00, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Discrtionary sanctions alert[edit]

Commons-emblem-notice.svgThis is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in Muhammad. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

To opt out of receiving messages like this one, place {{Ds/aware}} on your user talk page and specify in the template the topic areas that you would like to opt out of alerts about. For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.
