Talk

I recognize that this user page belongs to the Wikipedia project and not to me personally. As such, I recognize that I am expected to respectfully abide by community standards as to the presentation and content of this page, and that if I do not like these guidelines, I am welcome either to engage in reasonable discussion about it, to publish my material elsewhere, or to leave the project.

My real name is Larry Pieniazek and I like LEGO(r) Brand building elements. Feel free to mail me with comments or concerns if you don't want to post. As a note, I rarely get involved in anything any more, I confine my activity at WMF projects to a little light editing here and there, so your email is most likely to get a response on your talk page that I got it and I'm not going to do anything about it.

  • Here about a BLP that's persistently getting vandalized and you want me to semi protect it? Leave a note below, (User:Lar/Liberal Semi is no longer in use) and I or one of my TPWs will get it.
  • Here to leave me a message? Response time varies depending on where I'm active... Ping me if it's truly urgent, or find another admin.
  • Here about accountability? see my accountability page.
Note: The apparent listification of the category (it's back but may go away again) does not change my commitment to my recallability in any way

Please read the two blue boxes :).

A Note on how things are done here:

Being a "grumpy old curmudgeon", I have certain principles governing this talk page which I expect you to adhere to if you post here. (This talk page is my "territory", (although I acknowledge it's not really mine, it's the community's) and I assume janitorial responsibility for it.)

  • Please observe Wikipedia:Etiquette and Talk Page Etiquette here.
  • I may, without notice, refactor comments to put like with like, correct indents, or retitle sections to reflect their contents more clearly. If I inadvertently change the meaning of anything, please let me know so I can fix it!
  • While I reserve the right to delete comments I find egregiously poor form, I am normally opposed to doing so and use monthly archives instead. If you post here, your words will remain here and eventually in the archives, so please do not delete them, use strikeouts. In other words, think carefully about what you say rather than posting hastily or heatedly.
  • Edit warring here is particularly bad form. One of my WP:TPW's may well issue a short block, so don't do it.
  • When all else fails, check the edit history.
(cribbed from User:Fyslee's header... Thanks!)
(From User:Lar/Eeyore Policy)
A Note on threading:

Interpersonal communication does not work when messages are left on individual users' talk pages rather than threaded, especially when a third party wishes to read or reply.

Being a "bear of very little brain", I get easily confused when trying to follow conversations that bounce back and forth, so I've decided to try the convention that many others seem to use, aggregation of messages on either your talk page or my talk page. If the conversation is about an article I will try to aggregate on the article's talk page.

  • If the conversation is on your talk page or an article talk page, I will watch it.
  • If the conversation is on my talk page or an article talk page and I think that you may not be watching it, I will link to it in a note on your talk page, or in the edit summary of an empty edit. But if you start a thread here, please watch it.

I may mess up, don't worry, I'll find it eventually. Ping me if you really need to.

please note this is a personal preference rather than a matter of site policy

Next Children's Museum Backstage Pass[edit]

Hello! I wanted to personally invite you to The Children's Museum of Indianapolis' 2nd Backstage Pass and Edit-a-Thon, which will occur on Saturday, August 20. The Wikipedian in Residence project is coming up on one year and is going strong. While the first year focused on garnering institutional enthusiasm among staff, organizing multiple content donations, and guiding teens in research and article creation, the next year will focus on establishing an E-Volunteer program and more deliberately connecting with local Wikipedians and WikiProjects around the world. You can read a summary of our projects on the museum's blog, or visit the project page.

We hope you're able to attend the upcoming Backstage Pass! If you're not able to attend, but are interested in remaining involved and up to date on the museum's Wikipedia project, please sign up on our E-Volunteer page. There will also be an opportunity to participate in the Edit-a-Thon online, if you cannot attend on-site. If you'd like to make a request for images or research content from our curators, you can add to the Requests page. Let me know if you have any questions and I hope to be in touch! LoriLee (talk) 11:40, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Your opinion is needed[edit]

Hello! I'm touching base with you because of your past interested in The Children's Museum of Indianapolis Wikipedia project. The museum is considering adapting a formal E-Volunteer program and they welcome your opinion as a Wikipedian. Your responses to this E-Volunteer survey will be extremely valuable. The survey will come to a close on October 1st. If you're interested, here are other ways you can help the Children's Museum's Wikipedia project. Thanks so much! Non-free rationale for File:PeterAndJane 1a PlayWithUs 9781844223602H.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:PeterAndJane 1a PlayWithUs 9781844223602H.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Train2104 (talk • contribs • count) 00:17, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:AmericanBridgeCompanyLogo.jpg[edit]

⚠
Thanks for uploading File:AmericanBridgeCompanyLogo.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

PLEASE NOTE:

  • I am a bot, and will therefore not be able to answer your questions. If you have a question, place a {{helpme}} template, along with your question, beneath this message.
  • I will remove the request for deletion if the file is used in an article once again.
  • If you receive this notice after the image is deleted, and you want to restore the image, click here to file an un-delete request.

Children's Museum update[edit]

Kit Cat Klock

It's time again to share the latest news on the Children's Museum of Indianapolis Wikipedia project! In the last few months we have been busy with our third image donation, which was made up of 150 images that were professionally photographed specifically for this upload. We are asking for volunteers to categorize these images and distribute them into Wikipedia articles. Your help is appreciated! Check them out here.

We have also donated our first video and a second GLAM-Wiki Infographic to Commons. In September we were thrilled to welcome Jimmy Wales to the museum. Following our successful Edit-a-Thon and Translate-a-Thon in August, translations have continued with the help of the established QRpedia community, (particularly Russian translations thanks to Lvova!) We have begun to analyze our implementation of QRpedia codes and completed an extensive case study. In November we presented at the Museum Computer Network conference about how museums can effectively collaborate with Wikipedia. You can see more details on the Prezi.

In more general news, in addition to serving as the Children's Museum's Wikipedian-in-Residence, it was recently announced that I will be taking on the role of US Cultural Partnerships Coordinator for the Wikimedia Foundation. In this role I will be working to streamline the process of connecting interested US GLAMs with the Wikipedia community. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to let me know. Be sure to sign up for This Month in GLAM to keep up with the latest GLAM-Wiki news from around the world (subscribe).

We have a listing of High Need and Moderate Need requests on the Ways to Help section on the project page. I encourage you to lend a hand if you're able. While the Children's Museum partnership continues to truck along, we still are in desperate need of volunteers to help disperse our images and update and maintain content. Thank you for your time and help. Happy holidays! LoriLee (talk) 16:45, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Help[edit]

Forgive me I'm new. I'm an aspiring writer looking to help edit articles here. I need a neutral 3rd party to resolve an editing issue with Hullaballoo Wolfowitz here --> Jessicka

"Art Slant,[2] Juxtapoz,[3] Supacute,[4] Coagula Art Journal, [5] & Hi- Fructose [6] are all reputable 3rd party Art sources. Saying these articles are written by friends is purely speculation on your part. Jessicka's wiki page clearly states that she's an artist. Listing past art shows with 3rd party references is just like listing the albums she's released as a musician in her discography. Both are wiki relevant & significant"

Do you think you could point me in the right direction? I just need a 3rd party to have a look.

Thanks! (Lifespan9 (talk))

Could you, please, restore the article that I recently created in my user space? It was deleted because of some glitch which is easy to fix but I do not have a backup of the article.

Thanks a lot,

Notice of change[edit]

Hello. You are receiving this message because of a recent change to the administrator policy that alters what you were told at the time of your desysopping. The effect of the change is that if you are inactive for a continuous three year period, you will be unable to request return of the administrative user right. This includes inactive time prior to your desysopping if you were desysopped for inactivity and inactive time prior to the change in policy. Inactivity is defined as the absence of edits or logged actions. Until such time as you have been inactive for three years, you may request return of the tools at the bureaucrats' noticeboard. After you have been inactive for three years, you may seek return of the tools only through WP:RFA. Thank you. MBisanz talk 00:20, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

New article: Back contamination concerns for a Mars sample return[edit]

Hi Lar, I have just received a book I ordered from the National Research Council "Assessment of Planetary Protection Requirements for Mars Sample Return Missions". So I want to read through that first and then will edit the article some more and will probably refer to the book in it. It is a good book with a lot of material in it.

Thanks for offering to look over this article when it is ready. It is still at an early stage, but if you want to see what it is like now, it is here: User:Robertinventor/sandbox I expect it to remain more or less the same, just with some more supporting references and possibly new information after I finish this book.

The aim is to write an article that shows the concerns, shows what Nasa is doing to address them, and to explain why some scientists think that Nasa is not going far enough, and to go through the legal situation, and the alternative options to a Mars sample return. I want it to be neutral in tone, of course, and to mention all the different views in the debate. The main thing I am likely to miss are, first that I may make statements that are not referenced, because of familiarity with the material. Also it is easy for me to veer away from neutrality because my own POV is with the view that a Mars sample return is not appropriate at this stage. I want that view to be clearly represented but the other ones also represented as well.

Discussion is best done on the talk page for Mars sample return so everyone can see it. It might be an idea to wait until I finish the next edit of it, in a day or two from now, when I will also announce it on the Mars sample return talk page and invite discussion there.

Thanks!

I will give it a look. Don't forget to sign your posts to talk pages with four tildes ~~~~ so it automatically inserts a signature. ++Lar: t/c 21:41, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Into the Fire (2005 documentary film)[edit]

Ambox warning yellow.svg

The article Into the Fire (2005 documentary film) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

I couldn't establish that this meets WP:NFILM or WP:GNG

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Boleyn (talk) 20:59, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

I see no reason to save it. I have no idea why I created the article in the first place. (this remark placed here to document lack of objection to deletion) ++Lar: t/c 21:54, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Besides, while I may not be that active myself, I still support the WMF and what it is trying to achieve. ++Lar: t/c 19:29, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

Hi[edit]

I just saw that you are back, at least a bit, and I want to say a very warm hello! --Tryptofish (talk) 16:39, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

I do pop in from time to time... mostly just fixing typos I spot and that sort of thing. Thanks for the welcome and hello back yourself, I trust you are well. ++Lar: t/c 10:44, 19 September 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open![edit]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
