File:Manic monday UK.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Delage (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

There is currently a US image of the single Manic Monday by the American band, The Bangles. Administrators normally do not allow extra images; this is no exception. Only one cover, the US one, is needed to identify the single and the band's nationality. George Ho (talk) 04:10, 15 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Secondarywaltz: Many administrators have enforced rules to not allow more than one front cover without discussing the artwork itself or more about the UK release. Also, as long as the US front cover is used, omitting the UK image may not affect readers' grasp of the whole song itself, "Manic Monday", and its separate release into media and radio airplay. Why else keeping the UK image besides... its mere appearance? --George Ho (talk) 22:37, 21 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Secondarywaltz: the existence of {{Extra album cover}} implies nothing about the acceptability of extra non-free covers as such. Acceptability is assessed viz. the WP:NFCC. Indeed, the template doc says: "When using this template, please ensure you comply with the non-free content criteria. This includes not using multiple non-free images when one would suffice." – Finnusertop (talk ⋅ contribs) 21:28, 22 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
OK destructionists! I'm being the devil's advocate here. Since the nominator is on a mission to remove every occurrence of an alternate version of an album cover, they might as well have that subtemplate deleted. Isn't there something more productive you could do? Secondarywaltz (talk) 15:01, 23 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Here's proof of my productivity, Secondarywaltz: Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)/Archive 108#Adding extra cover arts in album and singles articles. I tried to convince the administrators to accept extra cover arts, but they still believe that having extra covers is unnecessary and does not help readers understand the song/single itself. That's why I'm doing this now. George Ho (talk) 18:14, 23 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well why the hell are going against your beliefs to do this? Makes no sense to take on a deletetion project that have argued against. Why don't you just let it be? Secondarywaltz (talk) 18:18, 23 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've done the same to extra covers of Beat It at FFD, where no one else participated. If you are desperate, why not create another central discussion at WT:NFC or WP:VPP? This matter was discussed over and over, and the results have been still the same as always. George Ho (talk) 18:35, 23 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Secondarywaltz: It looks to me like User:George Ho is abiding by the consensus at which the community has arrived, despite that he does not agree personally with it, which is highly laudable. Stifle (talk) 08:18, 15 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Passes WP:NFCC#3a and WP:NFCC#8 as stated on Template:Infobox album, "An alternate cover that is significantly different from the original and is widely distributed and/or replaces the original has generally been held to pass this criterion.", which could be logically used for singles. The current consensus for alternate images on album/single articles are that the alternate cover has to be significantly different from the original, widely distributed and/or replacing the original would pass the criteria for identification or an alternate image that is the subject of sourced critical commentary about the image would also be acceptable. Having charted on the UK chart equally the U.S. peak shows it was widely distributed. Aspects (talk) 03:06, 27 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Aspects and Secondarywaltz: Must a reader understand the song by looking at an overseas image? A reader can already understand the song's worldwide release without more than one non-free image. How would omitting the UK affect readers' understanding of the song's prevalent release? The UK front cover is not well discussed in the article by reliable sources. Also, the image has the same purpose as the US image. Isn't one non-free front cover enough? George Ho (talk) 06:30, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Look, I don't really care. The fact that you say "overseas" is the problem you have. The whole point is that Wikipedia is for worldwide consumption, not just where you live. Different covers often illustrate differences in marketing, cultural and musical tastes between countries or regions. Secondarywaltz (talk) 17:23, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
In that logic, no one would mind adding a Korean or Japanese edition? I did try to add a Japanese cover art of one of Madonna's singles, but IndianBio would not accept my proposal but deemed it an unnecessary another of visual identifications. --George Ho (talk) 18:59, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Also, Aspects, looking different isn't significant enough. George Ho (talk) 19:00, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
English language Wikipedia and countries was redundant for me to mention. If looking different was not significant, why would record companies go to such lengths to package their product differently depending on the market. It is very important! Secondarywaltz (talk) 20:06, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If that's "important", here you go: some covers might have controversial artwork. Covers are mentioned trivially. Probably we should avoid synthesizing the sources about sleeves, especially whoever is not The Bangles. Speaking of The Bangles, I found the source about the US image. I could not find sources about the UK one. In my theory, probably before the digital age, the resources were probably primitive, and distribution was regional in every area. However, that's just my theory. George Ho (talk) 21:00, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Found another source about distribution of singles in general. George Ho (talk) 21:02, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
To put the sources together, probably my theory would be affirmed. Picture sleeves were probably costly, so generic sleeves were enough. Europeans were still able to receive such picture sleeves, and the Brits probably began to distribute singles into picture sleeves like the Europeans. One time, there was a sleeve shortage (?). But that was before compact discs debuted in early 1980s and became more popular over the years (?) probably. However, CD singles didn't become popular until the 1990s. As said before, very little sources discuss the sleeves of "Manic Monday". --George Ho (talk) 21:12, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Again. I don't really care. I'm just correcting your misconceptions. Secondarywaltz (talk) 20:06, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oh Wikipedia, you are so funny - and so sad. It's not as if this matters one little bit, and yet it is debated with great sincerity and pomposity. Secondarywaltz (talk) 21:25, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • Of course it matters; we're trying to run a free encyclopedia. Stifle (talk) 08:16, 15 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
      • @Stifle: An encyclopedia that is full of error and recentism, because it is controlled by the consensus of youthful computer centric editors. Secondarywaltz (talk) 14:00, 15 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, when we actually read WP:NFCC#8 we see it's clear. This image does not add to readers' understanding of this article and its removal would not be detrimental to that understanding. It's just another bit of decoration. Full disclosure: I was canvassed to this debate by the nominator. Stifle (talk) 08:16, 15 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nominator and Stifle. No way this passes any ounce of non-free criteria. —IB [ Poke ] 08:19, 20 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete 1984, keep 1986 (for now) to replace side label, lacks WP:NFCC#8 rationale for more than one identifying artwork, see note about merging the whole shebang czar 16:45, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

File:Bangles Going Down 1984.jpeg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Delage (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).
File:The-Bangles-Going-Down-To-Liverpool 1986.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Delage (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

Both images are used for Going Down to Liverpool. I uploaded the image of the US vinyl single. Even when the song was not charted in the US, the song was recorded by originally Katrina and The Waves but later covered by the American band. Although the song is totally British, the US image is needed to indicate the band's nationality. Therefore, the UK and the re-release image are not necessary. George Ho (talk) 04:34, 15 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The 1986 reissue cover is ineffective to readers' understanding of the whole song itself, and there is already a US side label adequately identifying the song. George Ho (talk) 06:35, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Steve, both images are from UK. How would anyone outside the UK recognize any of those images the most? George Ho (talk) 05:03, 4 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't need to be recognized ("remembered") outside the UK, it needs to be recognized ("identified") by all readership. The photo's purpose is to be illustrative of the topic, which in this case is a hit single in the UK, most famously the 1986 edition. SteveStrummer (talk) 22:04, 4 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The Bangles aren't British, Steve, and using solely the UK reissue image would make readers think that the US single release of the song was only promotional, not commercial (e.g. Down So Long). Or should I say, people would assumed the song was not commercially distributed individually in the US. Or, without a caption, people would think that the image is of the US picture sleeve. If US image is still used, all readers can already grasp the history of single releases (e.g. reissues) and the chart history without the UK images by reading the whole article. I'm sure that the US image of the initial release is adequate enough, even when the US release had a generic sleeve. I'm unsure whether you are curious about history of releases in general, but I'll tell you anyway. Record companies distributed vinyl singles in either generic or picture sleeves. However, picture sleeves for vinyl singles were more costly than generic sleeves. Also, CDs weren't popular at the time of the releases. I read the article about a sleeve shortage in 1973, but CDs didn't exist back then. George Ho (talk) 00:29, 5 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Aspects and Steve: I recently added File:901 December 1987.jpg (OTRS permitted) in Going Down to Liverpool since identifying the band is the concern here. George Ho (talk) 09:01, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That image is irrelevant to the article and shouldn't be used there. What's needed is the image which best identifies the topic, which is (to repeat) a certain hit single in the UK. That'd be File:The-Bangles-Going-Down-To-Liverpool 1986.jpg. SteveStrummer (talk) 16:14, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Steve, the song peaked at #51 or #52 in the UK in 1986. Meanwhile, it fared better at number 20ish in Ireland, so would this Irish side label do? George Ho (talk) 16:59, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No, because it's not the best image we have available. George, we have to do what's good for the article, not our arguments. SteveStrummer (talk) 18:08, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Steve: I don't see how using an overseas edition is good for the article about the song made in America, but then again, I can't convince you otherwise. If it were good for the article, that would depend on readers' understanding of the song... or single. Speaking of readers, what about what is good for them? George Ho (talk) 18:25, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Wait, Steve... The song was originally made by the British. The song wasn't initially successful. Another recording by the Americans wasn't either, even when it hit the charts worldwide. #51 in UK? How is that a success? Anyway, I figure that the recording is American-made, despite the song's origins. So I think that the US side label is enough already unless someone wants some picture sleeve from overseas to be the infobox image for mainly its looks regardless. Also, people searched for products by side labels because most of the singles had just generic sleeves back then. The side labels might have safer fair use than picture sleeves probably. I couldn't use a B-side side label of Katrina and the Waves's recording because theirs didn't hit the charts. Therefore, we are stuck arguing about which picture sleeve to keep and which other to delete since Katrina's is not as prominent as it should have been. George Ho (talk) 18:38, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Closer note: This is all a moot point if there aren't even enough sources to warrant this topic's separation from its parent album articles. I get that the original EP doesn't have an article, but if this is truly best known as part of All Over the Place (The Bangles album), it should just be covered there (pun somewhat intended). czar 16:43, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This image is used in What About Me (Moving Pictures song). The topic is Australian-related; the band who recorded the song is Australian. However, this image is American. I added an image of the Australian single into the article to help readers understand the release more. Therefore, the American image must be deleted. George Ho (talk) 07:56, 15 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep Passes WP:NFCC#3a and WP:NFCC#8 as stated on Template:Infobox album, "An alternate cover that is significantly different from the original and is widely distributed and/or replaces the original has generally been held to pass this criterion.", which could be logically used for singles. Having charted on two U.S. charts and a year-ending U.S. chart show that it is widely distributed. Aspects (talk) 03:11, 27 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
See further discussion at #File:Manic monday UK.jpg. Also, being charted in the US is not enough to justify the US image, IMHO. The sources, while searching them, have not discussed the US image. George Ho (talk) 21:17, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, aspects, you have used the same arguments as before. George Ho (talk) 10:58, 14 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Fails NFCC#3a and #8 when we actually read the criteria: the image does not add substantially to the readers' understanding of the article and its removal would not be detrimental to that understanding. Old logo that is now no longer being used as the primary means of identification and instead is being used decoratively. Whpq (talk) 10:21, 15 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The nominator may have overlooked other sports team articles. Most NBA team article contains historical logos, which are also used decoratively instead as primary means of identification. I think singling out PBA teams because it is not known widely outside the Philippines is a bit of discrimination. -WayKurat (talk) 10:26, 15 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The File has been updated.Previously Uploaded a copy which was kept from Facebook.
There is now different EXIF. I'm not sure if that copy constitutes evidence of control of the Facebook account. I would recommend you to prove ownership of the Facebook account per WP:IOWN. --Stefan2 (talk) 21:34, 18 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:IOWN. If you publish a file outside Wikipedia before you upload it to Wikipedia, then you need to provide evidence that you are the copyright holder. If you are the user who posted the file to Facebook, then you should be able to find the page on Facebook where the image was posted and prove that the Facebook account belongs to you. --Stefan2 (talk) 21:33, 18 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

File:Flag of The President Of The Philippines (1946).png (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by National Names 2000 (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

File is uploaded as non-free, but I'm not sure if it should be public domain (PD) instead. Many similar files have been uploaded to Commons as PD (c:Category:Presidential Standard of the Philippines) including a free version of this file as c:File:Presidential Standard of the Philippines (1946-1948).svg. If the file needs to be uploaded locally to Wikipedia as non-free, then it's current use in Flag of the President of the Philippines#Historical uses fails WP:NFCC#1 and WP:NFCC#8 (WP:NFG) and the file should be removed and replaced with the Commons version. -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:39, 15 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • The problem is that we have a copyright tag, {{Non-free Philippines government}}, which says that files like this are unfree whereas Commons has a copyright tag, {{PD-PhilippinesGov}}, which says that the same files are in the public domain. If the file is unfree, then the use needs to comply with WP:NFCC, but if it is free, then its use is not restricted by WP:NFCC, and I'm not sure if we can determine what's correct without help from an expert on Philippines copyright law. On a related note, there are a couple of Philippines Government seals which are used outside the article namespace, but since I'm not sure if they are free or unfree, I'm not sure if I should remove them from those pages per WP:NFCC#9 or not. For the moment, I've left those files alone. --Stefan2 (talk) 16:23, 15 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • Until it's proven that they are free, we are to treat them as if they are unfree. – Finnusertop (talk ⋅ contribs) 16:31, 15 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
      • This image is from malacanang.gov.ph (Presidential Museum and Library - Biography of Pres. Manuel Roxas) and is in public domain. The website states below, "All content is in the public domain unless otherwise stated." --J-Ronn (talk) 07:49, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
        • Just as Wikipedia and Commons are confused by the contradictory tags {{Non-free Philippines government}} / {{PD-PhilippinesGov}}, it's possible that the government website from which the image comes also is confused by the confusing law. --Stefan2 (talk) 13:55, 27 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
          • That's true, but it's a rather cynical view that the Philippine Presidential Museum (or the Office of the President for that matter, given that the website hosts the same message and similar content) has poorer understanding of the Philippine copyright law than a bunch of Wikipedians. In general, we don't assume that people who license stuff have no understanding about licensing. By that logic, every CC-BY picture from Flickr is potentially a copyvio because users are confused by law (say, the elementary fact that copyright is exclusive to the copyright holder; because let's face it most people, even Flickr users have no idea about copyright). I think we should assume that rather than being confused by, the Philippine government is abiding by the law. If there is someone who should be assumed to know the law, it's the executive office that is tasked with implementing legislation. – Finnusertop (talk ⋅ contribs) 14:06, 27 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Source coypright notice in image, (which is misleading if this is a genuine WWI image.) Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:26, 15 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The fact there's a copyright notice within the image doesn't mean that it is still within copyright. It may indeed be misleading because it is wrong. Can there be any doubt that the image was taken when Sadlier was in the AIF and thus before 1919 when he was discharged ? If we can't be sure that the image was taken in Australia (and therefore copyright free since it was taken before 1955) then shall we rely upon the fact that the Battye Library is the photographic section of the State Library of Western Australia and shall we then regard it as "E1" type material under Australian PD being material such as a State Government held photograph "first published more than 50 years ago, or if made before 1 May 1969, first made more than 50 years ago". It's PD in Australia, was PD in Australia before 1 January 1946 and thus is PD in the US.-Sticks66 03:36, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
So the 'library' copyright tag needs cropping, as this is clearly PD-scan or simmilar, Thanks :) Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:52, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Why ? The fact that there is a fallacious copyright tag on the shot doesn't make it non-PD. Cropping the shot or not doesn't change anything. It's PD as a question of fact.-Sticks66

  • According to the file information page, this photo was taken in 2009, which is unlikely considering that the subject of the photograph died 45 years earlier. The linked copy has a copyright notice: "© LISWA 2001 Battye Library All Rights Reserved". The year in a copyright notice is supposed to be the year of publication, so the copyright notice suggests that this was first published in 2001. No evidence of prior publication has been provided. According to c:COM:HIRTLE, the United States copyright to an Australian photograph taken during Clifford Sadlier's life time expires 120 years after it was taken or on 1 January 2048 (whichever is later) if this is a work for hire, or 70 years after the name of the photographer (the photo is signed but I can't read the name) or on 1 January 2048 (whichever is later) if this isn't a work for hire. --Stefan2 (talk) 13:53, 27 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming that this image is copyrightable (the individual chemical images fall under {{PD-chem}} and chemical reactions are not copyrightable either) it fails WP:NFCC#1 since it can easily be replaced with an user-made image of the chemicals, user-made text and arrows. I agree that it is intrinsically PD ({{PD-chem}}). But it's also not up to current quality standards (see MOS:CHEM) so it should be redrawn from scratch, which would solve Jo-Jo Eumerus's ToO concern. Retagging it as PD would allow it to go to commons, but commons already has File:Seveso_reaction.PNG (and several other similar) that are of higher quality. So I say delete, because I don't see a need for a low-quality image of the same idea (content concern) regardless of license. DMacks (talk) 06:26, 9 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@PETEYTHEREF: If you see above at Wikipedia:Files_for_discussion/2016_May_15#File:George342011.jpg, it was because the nominator thought the image was an unused personal photo. I voted weak keep because I see that one of the people pictured is George Strait. Calliopejen1 (talk) 22:23, 26 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Well this is kind of embarrassing, having two of my pictures nominated at the same time. I may have misunderstood the criteria but I personally definitely believe that it's just as nessasary to have a picture of family members in a family article as it is to have of a person in a biographical article.*Treker (talk) 23:42, 15 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete: Problematic in terms of WP:NFCC#8: "Billington family" is neither one nor all four of those individuals so using this (in contrast to any other combination) is not quite the same thing as e.g. how a cover page is used to identify a book on its article (or indeed a portrait of a given individual). WP:NFCC#3: Most of these individuals have articles of their own where some these photos are already present. WP:FREER: at least three of these individuals have free photos of them (File:James-Billington photo.jpg, File:William-Billington.jpg, File:The British Bulldog.jpg). Using a non-free image of Davey Boy clearly fails WP:NFCC#1 and shoehorning non-free images into a montage that contains free ones violates WP:NFG: "User-created montages containing non-free images should be avoided". – Finnusertop (talk ⋅ contribs) 02:25, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't know about the montage rule when I uploaded the picture. I figured they would just be covered under the historical photo rule since both are deceased. I asked a while ago on the copyright question page and it seemed like it would be fine if it was a historical photograph. Sorry.
I've never violated a copyright rule before. Will I receive some kind of punishment now?*Treker (talk) 02:59, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No, the picture will get deleted and we can continue to improve this wonderful encyclopedia. The montage rule isn't set in stone, they "should be avoided" but I'd imagine there are acceptable uses (I just can't figure one, especially when existing non-free images are used and re-uploaded). – Finnusertop (talk ⋅ contribs) 03:04, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
