Category:Skolt families[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 19:46, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: merge, redundant category layer with only one subcategory with a Finnish Sámi family. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:04, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose: Category:Finnish Sámi people is not the only category above this category since the Skolts live in 3 different countries. Also there's two subcategories now. - Yupik (talk) 22:30, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • The other category is about a Finnish Sámi family too, so there is nothing wrong with the target. Marcocapelle (talk) 03:58, 7 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You are trying to flatten a category that does not solely belong to the category you are trying to flatten it into. It would be as incorrect as trying to flatten Category:Skolts into Category:Finnish people. - Yupik (talk) 09:16, 7 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And as I said on the deletion discussion for one of the families in this category, there will be more coming towards the end of the year. It's final exam time right now, so I don't have time to start writing the rest of the articles that are on my to do list or to translate the ones that exist on other language versions. -Yupik (talk) 09:27, 7 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • The only issue is that after merger the subcats are correctly categorized. Category:Finnish Sámi people is a correct parent category of both. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:23, 7 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Once again, it isn't. There is no 1-to-1 correspondence for Skolt families and Finnish Sámi people. Not really sure how to get you to understand this. - Yupik (talk) 17:18, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Here, let me try once again:
      • Finnish Sámi people could be Skolts, Northern Sámi, or Inari Sámi. Historically, they could also be from other Sámi groups that no longer exist.
      • Skolts could be from Norway, Russia, or Finland.
Merging Skolt families into Finnish Sámi people is just incorrect. Putting Finnish Sámi people as a category on the individual articles, however, would be correct. - Yupik (talk) 17:31, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge Per Nom to Category:Finnish Sámi people. If other Skolt families categories are created later from other countries, they can be placed in the correct nation too. - RevelationDirect (talk) 03:44, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please do not merge it; delete it if it need to be gotten rid of. It has the potential to screw up thing on other Wikimedia sites and as I have stated, is just plain inaccurate and incorrect. - Yupik (talk) 09:57, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • Nothing gets screwed up, the only thing that happens is that these two Finnish Sámi families are moved to the Finnish Sámi category and then Category:Skolt families is deleted. You seem to misapprehend the technicality of a category merge. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:20, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, but I do know what the knock-on effects of merging stuff in enwp does on other Wikimedia projects since I end up having to clean them up elsewhere. - Yupik (talk) 19:53, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Yupik: Could you explain the knock-on effects you're describing? (Other language Wikipedias don't need to follow the same categorization structure as enwp.) RevelationDirect (talk) 00:13, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have manually added both families to Category:Finnish Sámi people, this can happen irrespective of the nomination. Now the nominated category can simply be deleted. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:01, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Murdered explorers. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 19:25, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Dual merge. I don't think that the intersection between being an explorer and being assassinated in defining. Mason (talk) 14:17, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: Isn't there precedenct practice of limiting assassinated people categories to those who were killed due to their jobs or positions, so if the intersection is non-defining the upmerge should be to "murdered people"? That said, being killed by angry locals does seem like a significant occupational hazard for explorers, so I would think it's a defining intersection, though "assassinated" might not be the right word. James Cook is a prominent example that quickly comes to mind, and there are probably many others that could populate the category were it renamed to cover their case. --Paul_012 (talk) 15:50, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Alt merge to Category:Murdered explorers. As Paul_012 said, assassination isn't the right word, murder is more appropriate. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:33, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: rename as per previous closure. The issue appears to have been resolved. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 16:42, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Conciseness; we have Category:Siblicide in fiction (which is scheduled for speedy renaming). –LaundryPizza03 (d) 19:46, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Per nom, though I've half a mind that it could be upmerged further. Is being more specific than familicide really necessary? ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 23:03, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: this was originally closed as rename to Category:Films about siblicide, but was brought to DRV. I have reopened the discussion on the grounds that new information has come to light.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, HouseBlastertalk 12:41, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: The concern raised at DRV by User:Naraht was "Large majority of pages in category are about deaths of fraternity brothers and sorority sisters. If changed to siblicide these would need to be removed." (Noting for context and convenience.) --Paul_012 (talk) 15:54, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: My apologies for bringing this up at DRV, I didn't realize there was a more appropriate area. The primary issue here is that fratricide (and to some extent sororicide) are used more generally, in the context of both killing a person who is like a brother such as a fellow soldier in a military unit as well as apparently most of the entries in this category, which not only includes films with the situation where one fraternity brother kills another, but also where (for example) a maniac (non-fraternity member)kills all significant members of a fraternity that had assaulted his sister. Siblicide while on the surface is simply a rollup of the two, in practice would not include fraternities and sororities. I'm looking for solutions rather than being completely opposed to the merge (or even upmerge).Naraht (talk) 16:18, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Naraht: can you give some examples of articles in this category which are not about siblicide? Marcocapelle (talk) 21:18, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • MarcocapelleThe House on Sorority Row is a typical example. All of the people killed are connected in belonging to a sorority, but the killer is not a member of the sorority. So it doesn't belong in Siblicide at all. Whether it belongs in a group about fratricide and sororicide is another question. But Category renames shouldn't remove large numbers of articles from the category, in general.Naraht (talk) 16:54, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
