The result of the discussion was: keep / defacto purge. (non-admin closure) Cremastra (talk) 20:53, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT. Little room for growth and the songs and albums included aren't defined by the tour. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 22:16, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Songs and albums can be removed from the category if you prefer, but the category should be kept for the purpose of categorizing the other articles, and there is still potential for more articles relating to The Eras Tour - the community of editors writing and editing The Eras Tour-related articles is very active, and the tour is still ongoing. Theknine2 (talk) 07:51, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
But in an upmerge, why would Taylor Swift–Ticketmaster controversy and Death of Ana Clara Benevides be categorized as tours? StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 22:06, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:National Baseball Hall of Fame inductees. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 07:25, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Redundant; only contains one article which is already present in Category:National Baseball Hall of Fame inductees. Omnis Scientia (talk) 18:32, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose I have added in two further Hall of Famer’s from the United Kingdom to the category. This may only be a small list, but considering the prevalence of inductees to be born in the USA, and the high importance of U.K. born Hall of Famers to the sport in the U.K., I propose the category remains. It is important to the topic of baseball in the United Kingdom. AngelsAndOwls (talk) 19:08, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Disagree; this is overcategorization. Omnis Scientia (talk) 20:36, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The Hall of Fame article itself doesn’t make any great effort for the casual reader to see what countries the inductees were from. Being based in the USA the natural assumption is the inductees will all therefore be American. This category enables readers and researchers a way to differentiate inductees born outside the USA. If anything, more effort needs to be made for other inductees from other parts of the world, because year on year MLB is more global in its players, officials and writers etc. Why not help the world find their people more easily? AngelsAndOwls (talk) 09:15, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@AngelsAndOwls, why don't you do so? You can add the nationality next to the names in List of members of the Baseball Hall of Fame. That is a much better idea than making unnecessary subcategories; that is also the case with the list of inductees in the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Omnis Scientia (talk) 10:44, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nom. –Aidan721 (talk) 18:44, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete This can be handled in the article space and the intersection seems non-defining. - RevelationDirect (talk) 03:34, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, trivial intersection with country of birth while they actually played in the US. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:26, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
From the perspective of a British baseball historian and fan, this is NOT ‘trivial’. We only have a small number of inductees, and culturally and historically that is important to us, as a nation. How many other nations have inductees at all? Not many.
Removing the category will make it harder for people to find this information quickly, and impossible for people to stumble across whilst browsing, because the main page on this subject offers no definition of nationality.
Being so dismissive of a person’s nationality because they contributed to Major League Baseball in the United States, seems an odd viewpoint to me. Being born in the United Kingdom but moving to the United States was culturally important in itself, for example the Wright family brought with them their love of bat and ball games from Britain, and Harry Wright is seen by many as one of the father’s of baseball, and is celebrated in Britain. The fact that he hailed from Sheffield, where the rules of Association Football and the oldest club in the world exist, aligns with the Wright family in baseball and shows the city has sporting cultural significance.
Removing the category makes life much harder for British sports fans and historians to navigate. I would suggest it is time for Americans to actually expand the categories to include categories for other non-US nationals who are inductees. AngelsAndOwls (talk) 09:12, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@AngelsAndOwls, what you are suggesting goes against WP:OC and will only make it harder to navigate. Wikipedia already categorizes MLB players by national origin; there is no need to do the same for Hall of Fame inductees. Additionally, the Category:Baseball in the United Kingdom does a better job for history of baseball in the UK (though it needs some improvement) than this category would. Nominator's rationale: Per WP:CRYSTAL. The Next United Kingdom general election, although widely speculated to take place in 2024, may not happen until 2025 so there is no guarantee that any of these constituencies will be established next year. Grammatically, it doesn't make sense either as 'established' is past tense but 2024 is a future date. There is an argument that the constituencies were created in 2023 as the Statutory Instrument which creates them came into force on 29 November 2023 but that would break with the current structure which categorises constituencies by year of first election. I'm unsure exactly what the correct name for the category should be so I am happy to listen to any alternative suggestions. Stevie fae Scotland (talk) 16:58, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 07:26, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Category that misrepresents its contents. The "nationality" of a film is determined by what country's film industry fronted the money to produce it, not by where it may have been physically filmed -- but of the three films filed here, all three are American or British films that did some shooting in Samoa, and not even one of them is a Samoan-produced film at all.
Further, renaming the category isn't necessary: Category:Films shot in Samoa and Category:Films shot in American Samoa both already exist, and all three of the films here are already in one or the other of those, so deleting this won't eliminate any context.
This was, additionally, created by an editor who has been blocked from Wikipedia, in part because of their serial overcategorizing of articles on trivial, non-defining and inaccurate characteristics. Bearcat (talk) 14:45, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: This hardly seems WP:DEFINING. Just whatever program was scheduled next --woodensuperman 14:29, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. I'll grant that American television does have a tendency to use the Super Bowl's massive audience as an opportunity to try to promote one of its new or struggling series by scheduling a special episode of that series right after the Super Bowl — but that isn't a meaningfully defining characteristic of the entire series, just potentially of the one specific episode alone. The overwhelming majority of the contents here are series, however, not specific episodes — but the entire series isn't defined by the scheduling of one episode, and having had one episode aired after the Super Bowl doesn't render the series into a defined group that get collectively analyzed on that basis. So a list is fine, and indeed List of Super Bowl lead-out programs already exists, but this isn't a defining or useful basis for a category. Bearcat (talk) 15:09, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Foreign hostages by country. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 07:27, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: I'm not sure if "Foreign" is the right way to describe these categories as effectively they're describing where the hostages were taken Mason (talk) 14:15, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Alternate rename to Category:Foreign hostages by country. "detaining country" makes it sound like the hostages were arrested by police or soldiers of the government, instead of being kidnapped by local criminal gangs or terrorist groups. AHI-3000 (talk) 23:36, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My problem is with the "foreign" part of the name. Mason (talk) 20:38, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: foreign seems to serve a purpose: these categories apparently exclude hostages involving people who live in that country. I am not sure if that is a really useful category distinction though. But that is more an issue for the subcategories. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:01, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Wikipedia non-free images. (non-admin closure) HouseBlastertalk 15:26, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: In the context of relevant Wikipedia policy, fair use and non-free content aren't exactly the same thing as explained in WP:ITSFAIRUSE and WP:NFC#Background. Wikipedia's nn-free content use policy was, in fact, established to be more restrictive than the concept of "fair use" defined under US copyright law. Mixing the two terms up or treating them as interchangeable often leads to confusion, particularly among editors not very familiar with relevant policy. While it's true that the wmf:Resolution:Licensing policy's Exemption Doctrine Policy allows local projects to develop their own policies for using "fair use" content where applicable, ultimately it is the local policy that determines whether a particular type of non-free use is acceptable. Over the years, many templates and other pages associated with "non-free content use" have been renamed to reflect this difference accordingly, but perhaps this one just went unnoticed because it's just a maintenance template. Even so, it probably should be renamed for consistency sake and to avoid confusion. It should also be noted that there are many subcategories populating this parent category whose names probably also should be changed from "Fair use XXXX images" to "Non-free XXXX images" if the changing the name of the parent category is considered appropriate. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:08, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • It was part of the French colonial empire, not part of France proper. But a reverse merge would also be fine, it just does not make sense to have two categories for the same purpose. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:09, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • If French Chad was part of France, it seems by that logic that most people in French Chad would count as French and therefore the category is pointless. It would be like "Australian people in Tasmania". But I don't think that's an accurate representation of the situation. As said above, it was a French colony, not part of France itself, just as Tasmania was once a British colony and not part of Britain. MClay1 (talk) 12:14, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: dual merge to Category:French people in French Indochina and Category:French expatriates in Cambodia. (non-admin closure) HouseBlastertalk 15:23, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: There isn't a "French Cambodia" category, and I don't see how the only category member shouldn't just be categorized as an expatriate Mason (talk) 16:19, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Summer camps for children with disabilities. (non-admin closure) HouseBlastertalk 15:24, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: CDC: parent is Disability organizations, and description of category is "This category includes summer camps serving children with disabilities". "special needs" is a euphemism (per MOS:EUPHEMISM) Mason (talk) 00:36, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Support APA style forbids this term because it is "condescending" to people with disabilities.[1]LaundryPizza03 (d) 06:29, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Are all children with special needs disabled? It seems like it's not just a euphamism as it's debatable whether it's appropriate to call all neurodivergent children disabled (depending on the condition, e.g. ADHD). I don't know exactly who the camps cater to. MClay1 (talk) 09:34, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per actual content, I checked a number of articles and they were all about disabilities in general or about a specific disability. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:32, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Per WP:OCASSOC, WP:PERFCAT, WP:NONDEFINING & WP:RS
Musicians now use digital audio workstations to edit their digital music but the software articles don't generally provide sources for these users, with the exception of FL Studio. On the biography article side, the software is generally not mentioned at all in the articles I looked at cincluding with Ghost Loft, Afrojack, Oliver Lieb and Max Tundra, with at least one exception in Soulja Boy. Even when sourced, this association doesn't seem defining as musicians may change software packages or, as they become stars, delegate this work to technicians. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:25, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Per WP:OCASSOC, WP:PERFCAT, & WP:NONDEFINING
The parent category, Category:Instruments of musicians, is a mix of individual instruments owned by musicians (like Eddie Van Halen's Frankenstrat) and lists of instruments used by musicians (like Stevie Ray Vaughan's musical instruments). In contrast, this subcategory mostly has articles on commercially available instrument models or brands that were used at any point by the The Beatles. The Fab 4 may have used the Les Paul Model Gibson Guitar but so did Keith Richards, Eric Clapton and Slash; that model remains one of Gibson's best selling products. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:25, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, not a defining characteristic of these instruments. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:42, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • I genuinely have no memory of creating this category. If the result is delete, I don't have an objection. It seems more suited to a list. MClay1 (talk) 09:12, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. It would be different if this was about a specific instrument owned by a musician, for example B. B. King's Lucille (guitar), but these are just bog-standard instruments such as Fender Telecaster, so not WP:DEFINING here. --woodensuperman 08:49, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
