Nominator's rationale: I don't regularly edit in category space so I just want to be sure. I have created this to hold trauma and injury templates, so I propose renaming to an appropriate title. Tom (LT) (talk) 23:49, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Tamil school television series (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Category:Tamil teen television series (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

And all of their subcats (please tell if I have to list them). Gotitbro (talk) 21:06, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have listed all the subcats that need to be merged or deleted as guided by Marcocapelle below. Gotitbro (talk) 11:26, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Non-standard categories for language television which are otherwise classified under countries of origin. These cats were created by a sock whose master created many such cats and ethnic/regional POVPUSH edits including replacing regions for countries in infoboxes which is the same pattern seen here in these cats. Gotitbro (talk) 20:52, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have updated this with all subcats that need to be merged (then deleted etc). The cats that need to be merged then deleted are the ones that are classified under the country of origin or similar. The ones to be deleted have no standard counterparts in other ethnic/lang cats. Gotitbro (talk) 11:26, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Also inviting Cyphoidbomb, who initially dealt with the sockpuppet, for comments. Gotitbro (talk) 21:06, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Gotitbro: Thanks for the ping. I'm not too familiar with category stuff, but I wonder if some of them might be valid. We do have Category:English-language television shows, and Category:Telugu-language films, so they might not all be bad. But some of them are a bit weird, like Category:Tamil male television actors, if Tamil is both a language and an ethnolinguistic identity, are we saying that these male television actors speak Tamil or that we are identifying them as ethnically Tamil? Seems like it could be an overrreach. Since the user had major competency issues, anything that is ambiguous or seems like an overreach should potentially be deleted. I've been cleaning up after this dude for years and he still makes idiotic changes (editing while logged-out, of course...) Cyphoidbomb (talk) 22:00, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, we do have cats for other languages but not in this way and certainly not that disruptive with the language. The cats I have listed above are not supposed to be under the language label but the country of origin for example Category:Indian television series by decade, Category:Indian television-related lists, Category:Indian television awards and so on, the sockpuppeteer wanted to bypass these cats so he created these POVPUSH disruptive cats just as with his edits in infoboxes and others spaces (also take a look at another Indian TV lang cat for example Category:Hindi-language television on how these cats are supposed to be).
  • Procedural oppose, subcategories need to be listed as well; all nominated categories should be tagged (see WP:CFD for instructions); in many cases a merge may be more appropriate than deletion. It would be advisable yo withdraw the nomination as is and to take a bit more time for preparing a fresh improved proposal. Marcocapelle (talk) 01:32, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Marcocapelle: I have updated the nom with further classification into merge/delete rationales. The subcats under Category:Tamil-language television series by genre‎ have already been nominated for renaming I left a note at the discussion there, do tell if I need to add further tag these with a CFD to here. PS: It was very tiring to do this manually is there any way to automate multiple cat tagging for CFD and listing? Gotitbro (talk) 11:26, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You are fast! Earlier I suggested to withdraw because I assumed fixing all of it would take you another week. Yes I know it is very tiring. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:49, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Almost all of these television series are from India with barely any from elsewhere (I haven't actually noticed series from others in these cats TBH, Singapore ones are already under Category:Singapore Tamil dramas). I'll try and cleanup any categorization errors that arise after implementation. These non-standard categories were created by a heavily ethnic/regional POVPUSHing sockpuppet who created a whole host of cat trees to legitimize them and I can see why other users might have added to them. These cats are non-standard for television series, languages and keeping them is only pandering to the sockmaster who is still going strong as noted by Cyphoidbomb above as well. Gotitbro (talk) 17:21, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose for now Whilst I agree that there is a lot of over-categorisation and there is room for rationalisation, there two sticking points. Firstly, as stated by others, there are Tamil-language TV stations in several countries outside India and some of the nominated categories may contain articles which aren't Indian. The nominator will have to go through each of the nominated categories to ensure we don't end up with mis-categorisation. Secondly, most of the categories are child/grand-child categories of Category:Tamil-language television shows, which is a valid category as it is a child category of Category:Television shows by language. If the nominated categories are to be deleted then their contents should also be merged into Category:Tamil-language television shows as well.--Obi2canibe (talk) 13:37, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose -- India is a vast country with many languages. Hindi is the principal language in the north, but Tamil belongs to a completely different linguistic group. Merging Tamil-language TV with Indian is as nonsensical as if one merged English with Arabic. There may well be room for rationalisation but this nom is completely the wrong solution. Peterkingiron (talk) 17:44, 25 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Language is a WP:DEFINING characteristic of television shows, so we should have more such category trees. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 02:16, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose India is a nation with seven Big Brother versions and nine Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? versions, all split by language. So there is a clear need to adopt more defining criteria like language in this case. Although I don't disagree that there is room for rationalization. --Ab207 (talk) 15:16, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: delete, it is too subjective whom to add here. Note that these are historical people, different from entries in Category:Greek mythological heroes‎. After deletion, subCategory:Greek hero cult should be manually added to Category:Heroes. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:27, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: merge, redundant category layer with often just a single subcategory. This is follow-up on this earlier discussion, @Namiba, BrownHairedGirl, and Oculi: pinging contributors to that discussion. Marcocapelle (talk) 09:27, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep categories with 6 or more pages; delete others. This is one of those cases where a few exceptional subcats are helpful, but the complete series is mostly smallcats. The categories with 6 or more pages are: California, Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, New York (state). --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 11:04, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge all per nom. The terminology is off. I agree with the nom that these create a redundant category layer. I disagree with keeping the slightly larger categories. The question is their redundancy, not their size.--User:Namiba 15:14, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete per Marcocapelle....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 15:05, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete as a note the category has been emptied as of this edit, something of which I'm oppose while a CFD is active, but that being said a category under this title is highly problematic. Inter&anthro (talk) 21:53, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment obviously subjective, but it's now empty out of process. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 20:47, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. To be fair, I'll grant that the contents prior to emptying weren't actual examples of bad music per se (which is what I expected), but articles about things that aspired to be objective study of bad music, such as List of music considered the worst and The Rhino Brothers Present the World's Worst Records. But the problem is that's not immediately apparent from the name, which practically invites unproductive edits from POV-pushers adding this category to every individual song, album or artist who simply happens to not align with the editor's own personal tastes. It's just not a good idea. But I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that other categories for Category:Bad literature, Category:Bad cinema, Category:Bad technology and Category:Bad television were also created (some by the same creator as this, some by a different one) right around the same time — but all of them are subject to exactly the same issue as this one, and all of them should also be considered for deletion or renaming accordingly. The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: no consensus to merge. Renaming (with redirect) to Category:British television shows by genre is then required under WP:C2C per parent Category:British television shows. I will implement this as a split, since most of the contents are series as opposed to one-offs. – Fayenatic London 14:00, 22 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: merge rename, aligning with siblings in Category:Television series by country and genre. Also, purge Category:British television documentaries and re-add Category:British documentary television series. This was earlier opposed at CFDS. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:56, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
copy of CFDS discussion
  1. purge this category of show that are not series
  2. rename all the other subcats of Category:Television series by country and genre to use "shows".
But I don't see the case for making British programming an exception. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:53, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There shouldn't be an exception for Britain. However, articles properly categorised as programmes/programs/shows (in any country) shouldn't be improperly re-categorised as series. Another (hypothetical) suggestion: remove Category:British television programmes by genre from Category:Television series by country and genre which is, I think, the source of the problem. I now see Category:Television shows is (temporarily?) chaotic. Thincat (talk) 11:13, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Thincat, excluding Brits shows from Category:Television series by country and genre is no solution. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 11:21, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Your option (1) would involve a great deal of work. Some subcats contain mostly one-offs (Category:British television documentaries) other subcats contain mostly series (or entirely if the subcat naming is correct). (2) would seem to me preferable but not as a speedy because the situation has not been clear. Thincat (talk) 08:54, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@BrownHairedGirl and Thincat: pinging contributors to CFDS discussion. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:57, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - it appears to be a merge. Agree that non-series should be removed. (Category:Television shows by genre does exist but is not subcatted by country.) Oculi (talk) 09:31, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose (Am I expected to comment again? The process for dealing with inappropriate speedies is very arcane.) It is only a merge because the target category was created after the speedy nomination. Sure, if one-off shows are moved to an appropriate category (not merely removed from this category) a merge would be fine but is this remotely likely to happen? As it is the current category name is descriptive of its contents and the new name would not be descriptive. Thincat (talk) 09:56, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
