Legality of Cannabis by U.S. Jurisdiction

Category help.

I am not really an expert on categories and I just recently created this. Can you help fixing it? Thanks! Jhenderson 777 02:06, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

All done. It took a little bit of sorting. {{WPFILM Assessment level category}} needed updating. -- WOSlinker (talk) 08:04, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
Once again, thank you. I appreciate it. :) Jhenderson 777 16:07, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Cut it pls with re-dashing regional district cats

Why does this have to be such an uphill battle, with people trying to stop valid reversions to proper name/legal usages? See RM2 at Talk:Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District and frankly, I'm getting tired of people insisting on dashes who don't even know what the articles are about, or who haven't been paying atention to the useless name issues created by over-application/misquoting of ENDASH.....I've fixed one, but it's a waste of my time to have to do all the rest, given the incredible amount of time it's taken for people to MOSFOLLOW the sources in this....and even pay attention to what ENDASH says, rather than what they claim it does......weeks of my time when I could have been writing/improving content instead of being argued into the hole by obsessive MOSites intent on inflicting their taste by "consensus" on everyone else..sorry to sound testy, but it's been a long and needless battle over something I knew was correct in the first place and had all kinds of ad hominem absurdities and insults thrown in my path....by people who dno't even seem to do any content, and who are only re-arranging deck chairs on the Wiki-Titanic.Skookum1 (talk) 21:51, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

I was just putting the articles into categories that existed. I didn't do any category renaming myself. Since it matters to you so much, I've undone my last 11 edits. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:41, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
thanks. Good Olfactory said he was gonna speedy them once the RM was done, but Kwami said he might do it himself; no sign of either but the hyphenated names will not be redirects within a matter of hours (or, hopefully not, days).Skookum1 (talk) 00:35, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

...has been created, FYI. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:45, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Eh

Is not what I like. Please do not diff between names & articles. Just lets get the Hatnotes right, also in the Category there. My aim is few & simple hatnotes. Mind if I even propose deletion yours for now? (short note) -DePiep (talk) 22:20, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

They are not mine. I don't mind if you propose them for deletion. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:22, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
So we drop & kill that subcategory? Agree. -DePiep (talk) 22:26, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
I've removed the category. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:28, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Thank you, I almost got mad. Now again: thank you for that tipping. I will check the 2nd link too (or of course you could add [[:Category:Hatnote templates]] yourself -- OK). Btw, did you know this may be illegal drugs? -DePiep (talk) 22:35, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

So, what I did is: I added 3+2 Hatnote templates, you mentioned, to the category. That is where they all are. As for now, some 11 of them are also in TfD (good for them). In the end (of say February), there will be only useful Hatnote templates left. My experience is: not only are there many everywhere, but I can't find them when I need one. So you helped a lot, thx. If you are interested in this process, just follow Category:Hatnote templates now TfD. -DePiep (talk)

The names templates are indeed hatnotes. So I've put them in the new Category:Hatnote templates for names. -DePiep (talk) 14:39, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

Category question

Unless I'm missing something, is Category:Contemplated enlargements of the European Union really a template category? :) Just wanted to double-check before I undid anything. Avicennasis @ 00:37, 7 Adar I 5771 / 11 February 2011 (UTC)

No, sorry, that was a mistake. I have usually noticed most of them when going through and adding the banners but that one mist have slipped through. There is also a report page at Wikipedia:Database reports/Template categories containing articles, so I would have noticed it eventually. Thanks for letting me know though. -- WOSlinker (talk) 07:16, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
No problem. And the database report is actually how I came across it. :) Thanks for tagging the rest to make the report more useful in the future. Avicennasis @ 06:19, 8 Adar I 5771 / 12 February 2011 (UTC)

Infobox road

You were dealing with the Australian editors last I knew. I'm just curious, what came of those discussions, and if there's the potential to resolve that so we can kill over the last superfluous template. Imzadi 1979  23:19, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

The main two issues were having an allocation field (which Infobox road now has) and also that the name of the road is more important than the number of the road (or the marker image) so they wanted name at the top of the infobox. I've reinstated my title changes in the sandbox and setup a testcase to demonstate. -- WOSlinker (talk) 00:17, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Looks good, but I'd remove the color from behind the name for consistency with the rest of the world's articles. Imzadi 1979  00:22, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Done. -- WOSlinker (talk) 00:51, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Thanks Chaosdruid (talk) 02:43, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

I've used the {{tu}} template rather than the {{tl}} template to do the linking. -- WOSlinker (talk) 07:50, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Template loops

Hi. I wonder if you have any time to help me with some template loops. If you look at Template:Bad summary and Template:Ambox you should see (a) what I'm trying to do, and (b) what's going wrong. Is there any way around this? Thanks — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:44, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

It's weird. If you change {{documentation}} to {{tl|documentation}} in the ambox sandbox, and then add {{documentation}} to the end of Template:Bad summary you'll then see that the documentation template is only called once from ambox and is not called from with the documentation page. If this is then switched back on the ambox sandbox, but leaving the Bad summary with the extra docs, template loop is shown twice. So it's something odd with template loop detection. Perhaps Happy-melon may be able to help with looking at the Mediawiki code for this. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:48, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
I guess it triggers whenever a template has called itself. So in the second case, we have template -> ambox -> doc -> template -> ambox. It's not that ambox is calling /doc twice, but because ambox is calling itself. Even though in this case, a loop would not be created, it still bails out the second time it reaches ambox. So I guess there is no way to do this properly, except by noincluding the documentation as per normal? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:09, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

Skye

Hi. Can you please update Template:Infobox UK place with File:Isle of Skye UK location map.svg for settlements in Isle of Skye? and File:Caithness UK location map.svg for settlements in Caithness? The only problem is that some of the infoboxes don't say Caithness.. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:03, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

I'll need a bit of help first. There needs to be some way to identify which places to use the map on.
Just looking at some of the places in Category:Populated places in Caithness
  • Skarfskerry has lieutenancy_scotland set to Caithness
  • Bilbster has shire_district set to Caithness
For Skye, the only thing I can see that might be of use in identifying the places is to check if the post_town is ISLE OF SKYE or PORTREE
Once a method is worked out, I can then update Template:Infobox UK place/local to use it. -- WOSlinker (talk) 20:55, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

I think you might have to add a map changing feature to the individual articles themselves to display the maps.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:58, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

I can have a look at adding that method as well, especially for Skye which isn't a specific area on it's own. For Caithness, if it could be standardised on either using lieutenancy_scotland or shire_district (not sure which is more appropriate myself) then that one could be done automatically. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:01, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

The problem I think is that there is some bluriness in exact boundaries I think as the districts have changed many times and I'm not sure if the current Caithness map is an electoral district or a historical district. Perhaps you could contact Nilfanion in the commons and see what he based it on. If it is a lietenancy or shire then you could probably use AWb to add this parameter to the infoboxes which don't have it and then code the infobox to automatically display it. I'm cutting down Category:Villages in Highland from 500 odd to 0 by splitting by district Category:Populated places in Highland, although admittedly I think a few of them might be in a different new district but most should be right. The reason of splitting was because many of the villages were not actually villages but hamlets and was a bloated category for going through them. Next stage then is to get them all sourced and if possible de-stubbed. One thing occurred to me. You know the settlement type parameter for infobox settlement, the blue strip? I was wondering if maybe we could introduce that to infobox UK place and assert whether settlements are cities, towns, villages, hamlets or parishes or what..♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:21, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

I've added the Skye map with a |map_type=Isle of Skye option and it's now on Kyleakin. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:30, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
Also, according to Lieutenancy areas of Scotland, Caithness is a lieutenancy, so checking on lieutenancy_scotland should be ok for an automatic map. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:36, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Awesome. Can you use AWB to add the parameters for the skye settlements? You can access them in the nav box.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:39, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, don't use AWB. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:41, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
All done though. You may want to check just to see incase I've missed any. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:57, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Looks good. Mmm Ross and Cromarty will be tough with maps I think as it stretches across the region. I think maybe it would be better to create different maps of Cromarty and Ross perhaps to make it more specific. But that would need individual map type added manually like Skye. As far as I can see Nilfanion intends to create the others first and leave that tricky one and Lochalsh until last.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:00, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

For Caithness , what description do you want below the map. Highland currently has "place shown within the Highland council area". Would "place shown within the Caithness lieutenancy area" do? -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:06, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

.... shown within Caithness, Scotland would be fine. If you are certain it is the lietenancy area you could mention that and say ...shown within Caithness lieutenancy area, Scotland.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:18, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

I did try it with Scotland in the description but it seemed a bit redunant with Country Scotland only a few lines below. I've posted to Template talk:Infobox UK place#Caithness map to see if anyone wants to comment before the changes are made. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:37, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

That's fine then. Lochaber and Nairn are now made too and can be updated.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:42, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Remind me in a couple of days and I'll make the changes live. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:54, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Add Badenoch and Strathspey to that..♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:36, 20 February 2011 (UTC) We now have Sutherland and Inverness. Please can you sort the lot?♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:12, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Yes, will do soon. -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:00, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
Caithness, Lochaber & Nairn are now live. Need to set either the shire_district or lieutenancy_scotland params to get the maps to show. See [[1]] for the options. Will do the other maps tomorrow. -- WOSlinker (talk) 23:02, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Yeah I knew there was one missing, Ross and Cromarty. He hasn't made that map yet as its the most difficult..♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:39, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Template:Location map Scotland Ross and Cromarty is made.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:48, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

done -- WOSlinker (talk) 23:33, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

Can you do me a favour. Can you add a map parameter to the Infobox UK place so I can add open street maps of towns/eneighborhoods? I want to add File:Map of Ely, Cardiff.png to the Ely, Cardiff article infobox and will follow suite with others.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:13, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Is this in addition to the existing map? Because if it is, there are params to add upto two other images to the infobox: static_image_name & static_image_2_name. -- WOSlinker (talk) 23:54, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

I've replied at Template talk:Infobox comics creator. -- WOSlinker (talk) 13:44, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. The problem in this one is more than just different name of parameters. It's also different style to introduced them. And this style has disadvantages. -- Magioladitis (talk) 13:49, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
Are you going to add something about style to the proposal? -- WOSlinker (talk) 14:16, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
I added my POV. Maybe we could put them in the main proposal. -- Magioladitis (talk) 14:25, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
If you feel that any are really important, then they should also be in the main propsal section as well. Any good reasons not to have separate params for year/month/day for example would be good to add. If there's nothing else you can think of to add then shall I take the next step and add it to the discussion template and post on a few talk pages about it? -- WOSlinker (talk) 14:43, 26 March 2011 (UTC)

Canada Roads Banner

If its already in that category, why isn't it showing up at the list of non-standard banner templates? - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 20:36, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

It's in Category:WikiProject banners with quality assessment which is a sub-category of Category:WikiProject banners, so it does need to be in Category:WikiProject banners as well. Unicode chart templates

Hello. If I'm reading the history log correctly it shows you removed the "Category:Unicode chart templates" line from three CJK Unicode templates: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unicode_characters/CJK_Unified_Ideographs,_part_2_%286300-77FF%29, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unicode_characters/CJK_Unified_Ideographs,_part_4_%288D00-9FFF%29, and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_CJK_Unified_Ideographs,_Extension_B_%2820000-2A6DF%29. That means they no longer appear on the list of templates at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Unicode_chart_templates. Was that your intent? It seems odd to exclude the templates for CJK Unified Ideographs part 2 and part 4 but leave part 1 and part 3 listed. Likewise with Extension B part 1 but leaving parts 2-7. Thanks. DRMcCreedy (talk) 20:41, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

I removed the category because they are not templates. There are articles (Lists at present). Dabomb87 moved them over from templates to articles. Perhaps they should be moved back to templates and the category adding back? -- WOSlinker (talk) 00:38, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
I hadn't noticed they weren't in templetes... Looks like some have bounced between articles and templates before. I'm inclined to leave the as-is now that I know they're not in templates. Thanks. DRMcCreedy (talk) 20:23, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

Infobox football biography

Hi there, you're recent edits claim to be updating the infoboxes of footballers, yet you aren't using the standard parameters at {{Infobox football biography}}... any explanation? Regards, GiantSnowman 13:17, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

Yes, see the recent RFC at Template talk:Infobox person/birth death params. -- WOSlinker (talk) 13:19, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
The RFC doesn't appear to have been closed - and seeing as these changes could potentilly affect tens of thousands of footballers' articles, it would be nice if somebody had notified WP:FOOTBALL about it...GiantSnowman 13:24, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
It was listed on {{Centralized discussion}}. There are quite a few different infoboxes about, so was just listed in the central place. -- WOSlinker (talk) 15:08, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
Well no harm done, I have notified WP:FOOTY now and given my 2c at the RFC. Regards, GiantSnowman 15:13, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
You should get Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Petan-Bot task7 to do the birth_date, birth_place transformations as well. Frietjes (talk) 16:07, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

Your edits to infoboxes

I just wanted to let you know that you should be careful about doing those infobox edits. Although I agree with them myself there are a lot of other editors who don't like this kind of janitorial work and would happily block you or drown you in discussions for the next several weeks about how these are unnecessary because they don't render changes to the article, fill watchlists, etc., etc. Several other editors are already being swamped with these types of discussions as well as bots being blocked, AWB rights being revoked, etc. --Kumioko (talk) 17:25, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

The situation became disruptive. We can finish the standardisation in 1 week if we cooperate. We are doing fairly well. -- Magioladitis (talk) 17:32, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
The "you're being distruptive" side of the argument is already organized, whereas our "...but its still an improvement" argument was a piecemeal approach. We should find others that perform these edits who agree and try again at some point down the road. - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 17:41, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
It seems there are at least 5 of us. Me, the three of you and I have seen MZMcbride doing these types of edits as well. Presumably there are others as well that I haven't noticed. Do we have any idea how many are left? I would also suggest that if there are other edits we could perform at the same time to minimize the arguments that would be ideal but I realize that may not always be possible. --Kumioko (talk) 19:55, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
Just about all the infoboxes now have the birth_date, etc, params as an option but there still a lot of uses of the old params on the articles. -- WOSlinker (talk) 20:15, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
Using Yobot could finish the job in 2 or 3 days and it would benefit that more changes could be done at the same time. Now we are force somehow to do them manually and we are limited in infobox update. I am upset with that. most important I think is to update the musical artists infoboxes. The footballers can wait. -- Magioladitis (talk) 20:31, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
User:Johnny Au routinely performs redirect bypassing. He may be interested. Another point would be bringing it to centralized discussions or the village pump where a much larger group will see it. - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 21:29, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

infobox engineer in german?

hello, i saw you working on the infobox:engineer template. since i have no passion to endulge myself in infobox programming, how can i just copy and translate the template:infobox_engineer into german? step 1: i create a new 'article' with the lemma Vorlage:Infobox_Ingenieur (Vorlage is german for Template) - and then? copy/pasting the source code of the english template doesn't do anything. once this would basically work, i could translate the table entries from english to german. thanks, Maximilian Schönherr (talk) 22:18, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

Icelandic names

Howdy. A couple days ago, you "corrected" the DEFAULTSORT of an Icelandic name, putting it in the form "Last_name, first_name". For Icelandic names, this is usually a mistake. The "last name" in an Icelandic name is usually a patronymic or matronymic, not a western-style "family name" or "surname". You can generally recognize this situation when the person is an Icelandic native and the "last name" ends in "-son" or "-dottir".

For such names, the formal name, on which sorting should be done, is the first name. It is also the formal name of address (the name used in a formal introduction), and in the text of an article should be the name used on subsequent mention of the individual. For example, "Helga Hildasdottir was an Icelandic ski-jumper. Helga appeared in three Olympics."

See: cultural ramifications of Icelandic names. Also, it's common to tag biographies that use Icelandic names with the Template:Icelandic name template, reducing the chance that well intentioned folk mistakenly "correct" the article. Studerby (talk) 17:23, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

I am not sure this is completely truth. Check Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Iceland#Sort_keys_for_Icelandic_names. -- Magioladitis (talk) 22:11, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
Yes, not very good to have two different defaultsort methods used in the same category. Shouldn't the firstname, lastname only be used for Icelandic specific categories and not the defaultsort? -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:15, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
Yes. That was the conclusion of the discussion as far as I remember. You were right to fix the DEFAULTSORT to lastname, firstname. The sort keys for Icelandic related categories should be set to firstname, lastname. Weird heh? -- Magioladitis (talk) 22:18, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

Template:Infobox F1 driver

Hi WOSlinker. I was wondering: what was the rationale behind these changes to Template:Infobox F1 driver? Thanks. DH85868993 (talk) 23:32, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

Check this Template talk:Infobox person/birth death params (WOSlinker sorry for commenting in your talk page). -- Magioladitis (talk) 23:34, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
I see. It would have been helpful to have a link to that discussion in the edit summary. But no harm done. DH85868993 (talk) 02:53, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

"track"

Regarding your two edits here, what does "track" mean? And what are these edits doing? To be clear, I have nothing wrong with the edits. I just don't know what they do or what they mean. Thanks, Dismas|(talk) 21:15, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

Just adding a temporary tracking category to check for some variants of the birth/death params and then updating any that I find. Not that many really. Will be removing the tracking again very soon. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:18, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
They are used to track deprecated parameters. All pages with these specific parameters are added in the category Category:Infobox person using deprecated parameters enabling us to detect (track) these pages and fix the deprecated categories. -- Magioladitis (talk) 21:19, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
I see. Thank you both! Dismas|(talk) 17:09, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Athlete / Sportperson

I have the impression Template:Infobox sportsperson and Template:Infobox athlete hust are the same! What it should be done? -- Magioladitis (talk) 18:07, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

They are very similar but there are some slight differences. The worlds, olympics & paralympics parameters have different header links and the headercolor, ipcworlds & updated params only currently exist in one of them. Probably a {{Tfm}} is in order here. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:35, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2011_May_9#Template:Infobox_sportsperson. -- Magioladitis (talk) 18:50, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
Note: The ipcworlds param is only used on two articles: Richard Whitehead & Oscar Pistorius. These could just use the worlds param in a merged infobox instead. -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:16, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

WP:USHIST banner

Could you look at {{WikiProject United States History}}, please? Presidentman (talk · contribs) tried to add the U.S. 66 task force to the banner without any luck. I looked it over and it appears to be correct. But, I think I'm missing something. Thanks. –Fredddie 22:40, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

It was mainly due to a }} in the worng place. The taskforce had been added inside the todo hook. So I just moved the }} up a little and also added a TF_1_ASSESSMENT_CAT param that was needed as well. See [3]. -- WOSlinker (talk) 07:00, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

To-do

Some stuff need to be done in the next days: Add support to "birth/death_date/place" to all remaining infoboxes. Convert code to infobox class. Ideal would be to convert a few to use infobox person like I did to {{Infobox dancer}} and {{Infobox fashion designer}}. -- Magioladitis (talk) 11:34, 30 April 2011 (UTC)

We are almost done with the parameters. Next target should be to merge the 3 (or 4?) AFL templates. -- Magioladitis (talk) 20:28, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

Template:Infobox clergy can probably change to use Infobox person. -- Magioladitis (talk) 19:08, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

I've added the tracking cats to a few more infoboxes, so the number bigger now. -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:12, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

If you go through the F1 drivers, remember to bypass the redirect to Template:Infobox F1 driver. Probably "Image" and "Nationality" need also fixing. -- Magioladitis (talk) 12:16, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

I updated Template:Infobox WRC driver but you better check it too. Many pages lack birth_date and birth_place which it should be easy to add. -- Magioladitis (talk) 10:40, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Could possibly change {{{image}}} to {{Image | {{{image}}} | {{px|{{{image_size|300px}}} |alt={{{alt|}}} }} on a temporary basis and then update the image param in all the transclusions and then do something that doesn't use the {{Image}} template after that. -- WOSlinker (talk) 15:05, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I just need to make you aware that, when you edited Ignacy Daszyński just over an hour ago, you disregarded the {{inuse}} warning at the top of the page and caused quite some disruption to the copyedit I am doing on that page. I'd appreciate your care to avoid creating edit conflicts like this. Thank you. --Stfg (talk) 18:39, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, hadn't noticed it. Tend not to see it that often which is why I hadn't noticed it. Also it blends in too much with all the other tags that are applied to articles. Should be a bit more brighter really. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:44, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
Well, WOSlinker, maybe it is everyone else's fault, but really, the box is 2 inches high, colourful, pictured and right at the top of the article. Looking at the next section on this page, maybe a little more observation and care for consequences, please? 7 edits per minute is quite fast. Great, thanks. You might want to add the new parameters to the sample template as well, and remove the ones like |headercolor= that have been deleted. — Cheers, JackLee talk 11:01, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
headercolor is still in the template. I didn't add module to the sample template since it is mainly going to be used by other templates. The sample template doesn't need to include all options, only the most commonly used ones. -- WOSlinker (talk) 11:26, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
Oh, OK. Hmmm, could have sworn |headercolor= had been removed ... — Cheers, JackLee talk 12:19, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

Yes, please do. That would be a better place for the discussion on the parameter. -- WOSlinker (talk) 14:19, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

Template:Infobox swimmer -- conversion fiasco

WOSlinker, I have worked intermittently on American swimmer articles over the last two years, I have just returned from other Wikipedia concerns to work again on certain swimmer articles. It has become apparent from the current chaotic state of lost data that had been previously entered into nearly 2,000 uses of "Template:Infobox swimmer" that someone had altered this template, without any explanation. First, I looked at the "Template:Infobox swimmer" talk page for an explanation, but I found absolutely no discussion to provide an explanation of the recent changes and why previously data entered in previously valid fields within the template was not and is not presently displaying on the article pages. Then, I looked at the edit history and discovered your user name and that of another administrator, Magioladitis, having first altered the field names used in other, more generic infoboxes.

Finally, I discovered that first you simply transcluded the pre-existing "Template:Infobox swimmer" to "Template:Athlete," and then to a new generic "Template:Infobox sportsperson," over-riding the individual fields of Infobox swimmer, thus voiding the display of properly entered data in some 2,000+ pre-existing uses of "Infobox swimmer." Data not properly displaying as a result of your changes includes the name of the sport in which the athlete is participating (i.e. Swimming) (!), the athlete's primary swimming strokes/events (e.g. freestyle, butterfly, individual medley, etc.), the athlete's club affiliation (e.g. Club Nautico de Madrid), the athlete's college team (e.g. Auburn University), and the athlete's nickname(s). As a result of your unilateral changes, we now have a very real problem, and it's not a small one: your changes have resulted in to the loss of countless hours of data input for the principal data that distinguish swimming from any other sport. Frankly, it's just plain goofy that:

(1) swimmers are no longer identified as swimmers in their infoboxes,
(2) swimmers' primary swimming strokes are not displayed in their infoboxes, and
(3) the swimmers' club team affiliations (the primary training facilities for Olympics swimmers everywhere outside the USA) are not displayed in their infoboxes,
(4) the swimmers' university team affiliations (the primary training facility for American Olympic swimmers) are not displayed in their infoboxes, and
(5) of lesser concern, the swimmers' nicknames by which they are commonly know are also not displaying in their infoboxes.

Philosophically, I am in favor of as much standardization of Infobox templates and their component field names as makes sense in the particular case. Here, however, you have sacrificed information relevant to the sport of swimming in order to pursue a more generic infobox for sports persons. It is also very apparent that only a few editors had any input on these template changes before they were implemented. Someone transcluded "Infobox swimmer" into "Infobox athlete" with no discussion at all among concerned WP:Swimming editors, and then transcluded the generic "Infobox athlete" into the similarly generic "Infobox sportsperson" after a discussion at TfD. All of this could be easily overlooked in the pursuit of greater infobox standardization, but for the fact that your attempted implementation of the new template has been clumsy at best, and grossly detrimental to the individual swimmer articles at worst. Apparently, you were able to easily convert birth date fields and the like in the pre-existing uses of "Infobox swimmer" to your new standardized field names by using bot editos. However, if you will pardon the cliche, you have simply "dropped the ball" in your roll-out out of the new template by failing to account for the conversion of the first four of the pre-existing template fields of "Infobox swimmer" identified above. Moreover, for newer and inexperienced editors, there is absolutely zero explanation on the original talk page to explain why data entered into Template:Infobox swimmer" in articles does not display; only by tracking your changes on the edit page, and then finding the TfD for "Infobox athlete" was I able to piece together what you had done.

We need a solution to the problem you have created in 2,000+ infoboxes on the articles for world-class swimmers. If this means temporarily or permanently reverting your changes to "Infobox swimmer," you need to do it, at least until a more elegant conversion process can be implemented. And we need to come up with a proposal to do so before the wider circle of disgruntled editors begin to unilaterally revert your changes to "Template:Infobox swimmer." I, for one, was sorely tempted to do so.

Please consider carefully what I have written. Short of simply reverting all of your change to the template and its individual uses, this problem requires your input for resolution. Suggesting that individual editors simply edit the individual swimmer articles to conform them to the new generic template is not a viable alternative (and would certainly be disrespectful of the editors who created and built these articles and who were not consulted). I will wait for your considered reply----I also suggest that we move this discussion to a centralized location where other concerned editors may logically find it. The failure to include any discussion on these changes on the relevant template talk page (i.e. "Template talk:Infobox swimmer") is, well, disconcerting, and should not be repeated. Thank you for your attention to my concerns. (FYI, I have left an identical post on Magioladitis' talk page.) Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 23:16, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

I've reverted Magioladitis changes for now as they are not working as intended. Mainly because Infobox sportsperson does not support the module option. -- WOSlinker (talk) 23:25, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
WOS, thank you for your VERY prompt response. May I suggest that we centralize any further discussions on point on your talk page? I watch-listed you talk page and will look for further updates. If the discussion becomes more involved, I suggest that we move it to the template talk page so that a wider audience may participate. I am not a template expert by any means, but I can see a problem when it occurs, and if you talk very slowly, I will probably be able to follow your explanation. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 23:37, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
Just to note: I follow this talk page. -- Magioladitis (talk) 23:39, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
My main intention is to use the infobox sportsperson's code without changing the visual result. -- Magioladitis (talk) 23:45, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
The main issue currently is that {{Infobox sportsperson}} does does not support the module param. This feature will need copying over from {{Infobox person}}. Once that is done, the Infobox swimmer swimmer changes can be done in Template:Infobox swimmer/sandbox and tested in Template:Infobox swimmer/testcases before the changes are made live again. I can't look at this at the moment but will do soon if Magioladitis doesn't beat me to it. -- WOSlinker (talk) 23:49, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
WOS & M, can you elaborate on that a bit? Does that mean that the swimmer infobox (and previously entered data) will continue to display as it always has, but you are working to standardize the underlying code and template field names? If so, that sounds very worthy if implemented without display issues. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 23:59, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
Yes, that would be the aim. All the entered data would still be visible (although some may be shown in a different order). -- WOSlinker (talk) 06:57, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
There's now a sample in Template:Infobox swimmer/testcases. Comments are very welcome. -- WOSlinker (talk) 07:08, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
The sandbox sample looks good. Is the default for the medal templates display set to "collapsed?" If not, it probably should be, given that about a third of these articles are stubs and starts. Also, can we update the template page so that it shows the actual revised template format? New articles should be created with the actual updated template from the get-go, and should not rely on the redirect/transclusion. If you can provide the actual template, I would be happy to revise the accompanying explanatory text, etc. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 09:20, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

WO, the updated Infobox swimmer based on Infobox sportsperson looks good. Small tweak request: could you set the medal display default to "collapsed?" Some of these folks have 15 to 20 medals, and the infobox takes over the page when the default is set to display. Thanks. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 20:56, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

I've updated the show-medals option to default to no. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:06, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
Likewise, can you also default collapse the "show medals" function for Infobox sportsperson? Also, please reduce the displayed field name from "College/university team" to just "College team"----the longer field name is mangling the internal spacing within the displayed Infobox sportsperson and causing unnecessary line-wrapping. Thanks, WO. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 02:08, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
I've posted your request at Template talk:Infobox sportsperson and if there are no comments in the next few days then I'll make those changes. -- WOSlinker (talk) 06:57, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi WOSlinker, this edit doesn't make sense to me. It merely stretches the image beyond its natural size to fit the infobox, making it look blurry, and the edit summary is misleading as no obsolete blank parameter was removed. How come? Regards Hekerui (talk) 18:32, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

It was a mistake. I've undone it. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:34, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

Infobox NFL player vs Infobox NFL retired

I tried to update a page to Infobox NFL player but I noticed some things that need to be sorted out. Infobox NFL player has larger width than the standard templates, the names "Date of birth", "Place of birth" should change to br separated entries under the name "Born", etc. -- Magioladitis (talk) 11:17, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

I've had a look but can't seem to get it to look ok with that centered style. -- WOSlinker (talk) 08:39, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
I would remove the centered style. We need the same information but in the sames style with the vast majority of the infoboxes.-- Magioladitis (talk) 08:51, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

Importance/priority

I thought WikiProject Biography still supports priority. So I not sure this is correct. -- Magioladitis (talk) 14:29, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

If you look at the previous verison, the priority catgories are all red-links. -- WOSlinker (talk) 15:59, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
This is completely crazy. All pages use -priority or just priority. None uses importance. there must be some mistake. -- Magioladitis (talk) 16:04, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
I've added back in the priority params, but left the cats as importance. See Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2011 May 12#Foo-priority bar articles -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:34, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Task force banners

Is it possible to create a banner with {{WPBannerMeta}} that assesses articles for a task force and not for a WikiProject? Rather than edit individual project banners to add a task force for WP:USRD/US66, I'd like to have a task force banner that I can put on articles. Note, I'm just asking if it can be done, I'm not asking for you to do it for me. Thanks in advance. –Fredddie 22:06, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

Yes, that can be done. Is all mainly set with the ASSESSMENT_CAT param to assign the categories. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:26, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
Seems as though you've done it all. I've tagged Talk:Route 66 (song) for you. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:39, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
The only issue I see is with getting articles into Category:U.S. Route 66 articles. It seems to want to put them into Category:Wikiproject U.S. Roads/U.S. Route 66 articles. –Fredddie 22:41, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
I've added the MAIN_CAT param to fix that. -- WOSlinker (talk) 06:38, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Infobox figure skater

Any particular reason for this edit? The "infobox medal templates" template uses "font-weight: lighter", since bold + lighter = normal. Hence, it is designed to be used in the "header" field, rather than the "data" field (as per the instructions). If there is some other unintended feature being exposed, let me know, since (as far as I know) all other transclusions of this template are using it in the header field. If you put it in the data field, the "lighter" makes the included medals use a much lighter font than the rest of the text. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:16, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

No, I had though that they were meant to be in the data field but was mistaken. I've put it back to header. -- WOSlinker (talk) 15:32, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Infobox rugby league biography

I renamed dateofbirth and dateofdeath to birth_date and death_date. It stills needs work to replace cityofbirth and countryofbirth to birth_place. -- Magioladitis (talk) 10:47, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

I've added a tracking category & started on the list Category:Infobox player using deprecated parameters. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:15, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
We should do the same for {{Infobox go player}}. My bot still fixes Infobox MLB player. -- Magioladitis (talk) 00:42, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
There's only 220 transclusions for Infobox go player so may just need to go through them and update them without the need for a tracking cat. -- WOSlinker (talk) 06:09, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

I did 1,500 of the rugby league ones, those with countryofbirth empty. -- Magioladitis (talk) 22:30, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

Today 379 (those with countryofbirth and empty placeofbirth). Now only the ones that have both parameters are to be done. -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:34, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

Both infoboxes fixed. -- Magioladitis (talk) 13:04, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

Are the bday, bmonth, byear params being left in Infobox GAA player or are they to be removed later on?
Infobox rugby league biography does support the place params but the docs hadn't been updated, I've done that.
Will look at the other two soon. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:01, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
I think we should remove bday, bmonth, byear params. I also noticed that these parameters are supposed to add some categories to the page too. we have a consensus not to do that using infoboxes. Moreover, these categories don't seem appropriate. -- Magioladitis (talk) 22:37, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

I think we should remove |salary= from Template:Infobox university chancellor. Very few transclusions, usually unsourced or outdated. (I already removed all the blank fields) -- Magioladitis (talk) 09:53, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Yes, good idea. You could make a start by removing it from the templates docs. -- WOSlinker (talk) 14:25, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Have added tracking to {{Infobox NFL player}} & {{Infobox NFL retired}}. About 9000 articles to update. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:14, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi WOSlinker. I see you have done edits to the template recently. I asked MSGJ a while ago about converting the {{hurricane}} project banner to WPBannerMeta. (We held out since we tend to implement custom features, but maintenance time for the template comes at a premium now.) I was trying to get that conversion working, but there were a few things that blocked me from doing the switch.

In particular, I couldn't get Category:Tropical cyclone articles with incomplete B-Class checklists to work for assessments with incomplete B-Class checklists. We also have slightly different formatting for the comments section (to match {{To do}}'s "coffee roll" talk page format) and B-Class checklists. What changes do I need to do to the sandbox to implement those features? Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 00:47, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

I've added the Category checklists but theres still a bit of work to do on changing the comments section colour as it will need some changes doing to the comments code. -- WOSlinker (talk) 06:54, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
Comments background colour is now done as well. So ready to implement if you want to. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:46, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
Looks great. The only other thing I would add is to add a {{{style}}} parameter to {{WPBannerMeta/comments}} so I could add border: 1px dotted black; to the comments box (or alternatively, just create a {{{border}}} parameter). But that is minor cosmetic stuff, and I would give a go-ahead to implementation. (I would do it but I'm not sure if everything that needs to be done is just removing "/Sandbox" from the places where it is included in the template, or if there is more to it than that.) Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 21:33, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
Added style & made the banner live. Just looking at some of the pages with comments, and some just have is a link to a separate assessment page. e.g. Talk:Hurricane Katrina. Would a separate parameter called assessment_page which showed the link be better for those rather than a comment? Would also only show up on the Tropical cyclone banner then rather than most of them then if that was the case -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:47, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
We sort of already have an assessed= parameter that did that (or an #ifexist checking for Wikipedia:WikiProject Tropical cyclones/Assessment/BASEPAGENAME), but if we have an assessment-page parameter that would be more flexible. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 21:57, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
I've added the param. I'll delete the comments pages that just have a link to the assessment page as it's just a duplication. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:06, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
Sure. Those are from way back before WP:WVWP used the 1.0 bot to populate assessment tables, so nothing will probably be harmed. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 22:08, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
One thing I have noticed is that the new template did not properly populate Category:Unsorted tropical cyclone articles. I played around with the banner a little bit and got it to remove some of the entries in the category (namely, those that are already sorted into one of the three primary task forces), but I haven't been able to figure out how to filter out non-article pages (such as templates, categories, redirects and disambiguation pages) from being added to that category. How would I go about fixing that? Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 10:43, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
All sorted now. -- WOSlinker (talk) 12:53, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Please explain the reason for such edits

Could you please explain why you remove unused parameter from infoboxes, like in this edit. As long as it is there, it is easy for editors to add the information. Debresser (talk) 22:00, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Yes, bands do not have a birth or death date. Infobox musical artist is used for both individuals and groups which is why those parameters exist but are not appropriate for bands which is why I'm removing them. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:03, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
Logical. Good luck. Debresser (talk) 22:20, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Infobox musical artist

I updated transclusions of {{Infobox musical}} artist to use lowercase parameters but I will need a tracking category to check if I missed something. We only left with the Born/Died problem. -- Magioladitis (talk) 11:30, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

See Category:Articles using Infobox musical artist with deprecated parameters (uppercase) -- WOSlinker (talk) 13:13, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
A lot of them seem to be the "Landscape" parameter. Do you want that tracked? -- WOSlinker (talk) 14:00, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
It would be good to remove "Landscape" from all infoboxes with no image as a start and then all that have a value other than yes and see what's left. -- Magioladitis (talk) 14:21, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
Started doing the first case. -- Magioladitis (talk) 14:37, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
You could also remove all those where it is not Landscape=yes. Another tracking category for those: Category:Articles using Infobox musical artist with deprecated parameters (landscape) -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:52, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
Done both. -- Magioladitis (talk) 21:20, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

Could you change this to use Infobox class? I tired but I not sure how |era= works. -- Magioladitis (talk) 21:31, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

era was changed to period in 2008 but the docs weren't changed. I'll have a look at changing it to use the infobox template soon. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:01, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
I guess we can just remove it then. The infoboxes sill use "era" but nobody complained of not showing anything. Moreover, in the aboveclass it should be the name instead of the notability. -- Magioladitis (talk) 22:17, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
Converted. There are some infoboxes with invalid parameters though. -- Magioladitis (talk) 22:39, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

To reduce the problem with the image placeholders , a good idea would be to first add infoboxes to pages with Medaltemplates like I did here. -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:46, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Template:Jct type

By request at WP:USRD/S/R, I made a new shield and banner for the Illinois GRR-Spur type. (see here) Now I'm stuck trying to get the banner working for the type. It should appear like I coded it on the request page. It would be greatly appreciated if you could look at it sometime. Thanks in advance. –Fredddie 03:16, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

I see that you had done most of the work. It's quite a maze those templates. Anyway, I did this (and also to plate/2 3 and 4) and it's now working. -- WOSlinker (talk) 07:14, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Salary and net worth of dead people

I think e should remove these fields from infoboxes of dead people. -- Magioladitis (talk) 12:31, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

Could build something into the infobox code so that if death_date is set, it won't show those two items. Or would you prefer to just do a tracking category? -- WOSlinker (talk) 12:50, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
Tracking is better. -- Magioladitis (talk) 21:38, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
Added tracking here. Sometimes still seems worth showning the values though, see William Remington for example. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:38, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. I agree. Let's see what we have there. Maybe it was a false alarm. Btw, check also Template_talk:Infobox_member_of_the_Knesset#Changes_per_Infobox_person_for_consistency_part_2.-- Magioladitis (talk) 22:58, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

Template help

I could use a hand with something that I started working on yesterday. We merged the templates together a couple of weeks so that {{jctint}} will generate an exit list. The concept is simple, if the first unnamed parameter in the template is set to "exit", then the template will add the coding for a column for the exit number.

Now, I'm trying to get things to work for old vs. new exit numbers. So far, if you look at Template:Jctint/testcases, you'll see that my mockup for dealing with a (fictitious) freeway that had a set of sequential numbers that went mileage-based. The jctint sandbox is working well at handling the {{jctint|old}} coding and outputting the two sets of exit numbers. The problem has been with the header.

What I need is to get the header to insert the "Old exit" column, rename the "Exit" column to "New exit". If that unnamed parameter isn't defined, then the next column is supposed to be "Roads intersected", but if it's defined as either old or exit, we need it to say "Destinations". (That's not my ideal; I'd rather it just use "Destinations in all cases, but I was overruled previously. We also need an "old_ref" parameter to allow a reference to appear for the "Old exit" column" just as "location_ref", "length_ref" and "exit_ref" appear in the "Location", "Mile"/ect and "Exit"/"New exit" columns respectively. I've tried various coding schemes, and in all cases, I'm getting blank lines above the tables on the testcases page, and the "Mile" column is getting blank lines underneath the word in the cell.

Any thoughts? If you come up with a solution, can you tell me what you did that worked and why? Imzadi 1979  19:45, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

It's mainly all the carriage returns at the end of the lines interacting with the #if statements. I've replaced some of the #ifs with a #switch (see here) which seems to have fixed that. There was also a few blank lines appearing before the table for some reason as well which I fixed by replacing some carriage returns with html comments (see here). -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:24, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Thank you. I tried using a switch, and it seems to make things worse. I'm just glad that it appears to be working right now. Time to take it live. Imzadi 1979  21:34, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
