Hehe, thanks! I wasn't sure if anyone would even notice my recent edits to some of these remote BC rivers, like the Chilako River, which is practically an orphan page. I've sometimes tried to work on Fraser River tributaries but found the total Fraser system way too big and complex to work on all at once. So I thought I'd start with a sizable but remote and "not too complicated" tributary, like, oh, I have no idea, the Nechako River? Sure, why not? After a while I realized I had picked the wrong tributary for "not too complicated". Wow, Kenney Dam, the reservoir, the diversion to Kitimat, etc—that's some major terraforming! So I spread out to other Fraser rivers. But I am making a page for the Cheslatta River, which could be worth a DYK—a once relatively small river transformed into a giant drain for the Nechako Reservoir, sometimes subjected to such large flows it carved new channels...quite a story. It's tres crazy up there, all for an aluminum smelter! Must be one of the bigger impoundment areas in the world. Ootsa Lake I've dipped my toes in, there was a 100,000 hectare island for sale up there once for something like 40,000 bucks. The whole thing. I'll try help out with Cheslatta, I'd like to visit the Natural Resources Canada library here in Van before it's shut (grrrr..), maybe fanangle one of the big DFO river bibles before it hits the dumpster, they're stats heaven. I just found that too :-) ...I think it was the biggest impoundment in Canada at least, but surpassed by Williston Lake on the Peace River, I think. Still probably one of the world's larger ones (there's got to be a WP list about that, no?List of reservoirs by volume) Anyway, I should get a reasonable Cheslatta River start page up later today—something worthy of submitting a WP:DYK, but probably still just a start page. I found a couple of books online that describe some of the river-chaos on the Cheslatta and upper Nechako after the spillway was let loose. For folks living near those rivers it was end-of-the-world-ish. There's also interesting stuff about Alcan and the BC government colluding to, among other things, silence or disempower the people who were (and are) protesting. Hmm, only 35 by volume, eh. Bet you it's up there in terms of area. I'll take a look at this tomorrow at work, might have some good hard data. As for the hoodwinking of the public by Alcan/PofBC, probably the Evenden book is best. Just calling the 1970's part of the project the Kemano Completion Project was a smooth p.r. move, making it sound like a fait accompli. It all makes for some good DYK hook possibilities. Heh yea, "completion", almost laughable once you realize the PR spin. And wait, which Evenden book? There's Fish versus power : an environmental history of the Fraser River. The Seattle Library is quite lacking on this subject, though UW's library has some stuff, like this Christensen book Too good to be true : Alcan's Kemano Completion Project. Hey Pfly, hope you are well. You don't seem to be around much, but if you drop by, I've got a question. I'm going to fill out some more of our BC rivers articles this year, helped by my new Rivers of North America (200$ later!). Right now, we've got the North and South Thompson split off into two standalone articles. I'm conflicted by how much the Thompson article should cover the system as a whole, and how much info should live in the North/South articles. The above book treats them mostly as a single system.
