English: Joseph Watson, 1st Baron Manton (d.1922), mounted on a hunter. Portrait by Lynwood Palmer (1868–1941). Collection of Baron Manton, Houghton Hall, Yorkshire. Provenance: commissioned from the artist by Joseph Watson, 1st Baron Manton (1873–1922), together with a portrait of his racehorse "Love in Idleness", winner of the 1921 Oaks. Following the death of the 1st Baron in 1922, both paintings eventually passed to his second son Hon. Robert Fraser Watson (1900-1975) (younger brother of (George) Miles Watson, 2nd Baron Manton (1899–1968)), of Thankerton House, Windlesham, Surrey, by whose will both paintings were bequeathed to his nephew (Joseph) Rupert Eric Robert Watson, 3rd Baron Manton (1924–2003), of Houghton Hall, Sancton, Yorkshire, from whom to his son and heir Miles Ronald Marcus Watson, 4th Baron Manton (b. 1958) of Houghton Hall.
