Français : L’entrepreneur forestier canadien-français Édouard Lacroix a construit un chemin de fer de 21 km dans la forêt au nord du Maine (USA) qu’il a exploité de 1927 à 1933. La première locomotive, trop vieille et pas assez puissante, brise très souvent. La locomotive Brooks 1901 (No 2) achetée à New-York, est acheminée par rail jusqu’à Lac Frontière au Québec, où elle est démontée (chaudière et rouage d’entrainement) et chargée sur deux traîneaux. En mars 1928, deux semi-chenillés Lombard remorquent la locomotive sur 80,5 km de chemins forestiers gelés, jusqu'au site du «Tramway» (un convoyeur abandonné) entre le lac Eagle et le lac Chamberlain, au Maine, USA. À la fin du contrat avec la Great Northern, Lacroix abandonne les locomotives à vapeur dans un hangar du terminus de lac Eagle.
English: The French Canadian Édouard Lacroix, a lumber baron, built a 13 mile railroad in the northern woods of Maine, that operated from 1927 to 1933. The first locomotive, too old and underpowered, had numerous breakdowns. The Brooks 1901 (No 2) was bought in New York, came by rail to Frontiere Lake, was dismantled in two (boiler and running gear) and put on two sleds. In March 1928, two Lombard log haulers pulled them over 68 miles of iced forest road to “Tramway site” between Eagle Lake and Chamberlain Lake, Maine, USA. At the end of his contract with the Great Northern, Lacroix left the two steam locomotives in a shed at the Eagle Lake terminus. |
