Carl is an unincorporated community in Travis County, in the U.S. state of Texas.[1] It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area.

History[edit]

Thirty people were reportedly living there in 1886. The next year, a post office was established there with William T. Hart as the postmaster. The community had 250 residents, a steam gristmill, a cotton gin, four churches, a hotel, and a general store by the early 1890s but around 1900, the settlement started to deteriorate. In 1902, the post office was shut down, and mail was instead delivered to Buda in Hays County. In the 1940s, the location was identified on county route maps by a church and a few dispersed dwellings. In 1990, Carl was still referred to as a community.[2]

Geography[edit]

Carl is located 12 mi (19 km) south of Austin and 2 mi (3.2 km) north of Creedmoor in southern Travis County.[2]

Education[edit]

Carl had its own school in the early 1890s and the 1940s.[2] Today the community is served by the Del Valle Independent School District. Schools that serve the community are Creedmoor Elementary School, John P. Ojeda Junior High School, and Del Valle High School.
