23 December 2009

Season's greetings! Okay, so I went absent for a long time I hope this hasn't phased you in any way. I'm looking for something to do is there any areas where you can direct me (such as a list of articles for clean up) in the anime and video games projects?? I'm usually bored and looking for something to do here ever since I finished DKC2 Also how do I create a template? I want one for my userpage. NarSakSasLee (talk) 12:23, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, I'm fine. In fact, it's probably a good thing that you didn't show up for a while. My life got a bit of an upheaval and it's messed up my editing abilities for a short time. Mostly fine now though. Anyway, hi! If you want, I can search for the anime WikiProject, but since I know where it is, here's the video games lists so far. This category contains pages marked for clean-up. This page, on the other hand, allows you to click on any of the importance or quality rating and be given links to all of them (though, as far as I can see, it's sadly impossible to pick both the importance and quality, so if you want to work on High-importance stubs, you'll need to search around for them). Secondly, exactly what sort of template are you looking for? Are you looking for a userbox, a page to transclude to the userpage (meaning that all of the coding is on a different page, thus tidying up the page a bit) or do you mean you want something like my new userpage? --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 12:43, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, well, i just hope your okay now with your life. As for the template I was think something like those at the bottom of articles. I want shortcuts, personalised of course, so I can quickly navigate to other articles, wikiprojects and clean up lists or catagories or even people. I didn't realise that userboxes were proper templates too. As for your userpage -- its far too complex for me because there is probably so much code that my brain may get frazzled. Yeah and I probably want them "transcluded" (such big words for a simple task!) how do I go about doing it?. NarSakSasLee (talk) 13:07, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
What the...? Damn it! Sorry about the wait. I had responded about an hour or two after your question but the edit clearly didn't go through for some reason. (grumbling) Okay, let me see if I can remember what I'd said... First off, it's just a simple matter of doing this ("{{uaa|nb}}"). That's the most simple way to add a template. However, transcluding does have a few problems. If an alteration is made to the page being transcluded, that alteration will appear on all the pages it is being transcluded to. This is sometimes helpful (e.g. it allows me to see your responses here on my talk page). However, if a vandal attacks the page, it you may end up with a swear word on a couple of thousand pages, say. Hence, substition is sometimes used, like so ("{{subst:uaa|nb}}"). Depending on what the template is, you may want to transclude, you may want to substitute. It's complex, but you'll probably get the hang of it quickly enough. Anyway, as for the template, I'll create it for you and then tell you what I did (that'd be the easiest thing to do). Give me a bullet point list of everything you want in the template (and if you want them in any particular grouping or if that's left up to my judgement). I... err... think that's everything I'd said... --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 01:40, 30 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Update: "This page, on the other hand, allows you to click on any of the importance or quality rating and be given links to all of them (though, as far as I can see, it's sadly impossible to pick both the importance and quality, so if you want to work on High-importance stubs, you'll need to search around for them)." All WikiProject using this system have been updated and you now can crossreference quality and importance (though it takes you outside of Wikipedia to do so). --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 15:29, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

2 December 2009

Hi, I have a few Qs I was hoping to get help with:

  • what template should I use for adding references to articles? In real life, I am most familiar with APA style and want to use that if possible
  • what gallery template do you recommend?
  • what templates should I use to add "citation/source/reference is needed" to a claim I think doesn't make sense?

Thanks, --The.Filsouf (talk) 20:41, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To answer in order:
  • It depends on where the information comes from. For online content, the most common, it is {{cite web}}. The second most common (in the articles I edit, anyway) is {{cite journal}}. A full list can be found here. Let me know if you have any trouble with them.
  • Gallery template? I don't generally have much to do with pictures, but I can bludgeon problems better well. What context is it in? What article is it for?
  • If you need a citation for a specific statement, use {{citation needed|date=December 2009}}. If it's an entire article at issue rather than a sentence here or there, see here for the list of them. Again, if you have any trouble with them, simply ask. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 20:50, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Red Star

Red Star

Congratulations, Thejadefalcon! It's my pleasure to award you December 21, 2009's Red Star for being hard working, kind to others, and for being an excellent user in general. A record of this award will always be kept at User:Meaghan/Shining Stars. Enjoy! Meaghan - Merry Christmas! - 14:16, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You could also receive the next higher up award, the Orange Star!

Oh, wow... thank you. Seriously, you have no idea how much this has brightened up my day. I've been horribly depressed since last night and this has really helped me. Thank you, Meaghan. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 19:30, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

MostFamousPeopleUSA (talk) 01:07, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(shrugs) Made me laugh at least, as well as a few others I know. Anyway, as Meaghan said, "I hope [you] understand that my Red Star is different" from the Order of the Red Star. Last I checked, people awarded the Order of the Red Star were not given a great big ball of fire. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 01:24, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Russian Red Star is a great award given to great people. I would rather have that one any day of week.
MostFamousPeopleUSA (talk) 01:34, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

← As would I, but this isn't the Order of the Red Star is it, now? This is merely the "Red Star" and I fail to see what the issue is. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 01:38, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sigs

This was an inappropriate edit. Cutting disruptive sigs back to a bare form is certainly appropriate; see example, below ;) *Your* sig is pretty borderline, so you should watch it.

Nice user page; I should know, I wrote the framework you're using to build it.

Sincerely, Street-Legal Sockpuppet Jack Merridewthis user is a sock puppet 16:34, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see how you can call my signature disruptive at all (especially since I've had an admin's approval for it), never minding that monstrosity. Maybe you can do what SatuSuro didn't and explain why it is borderline disruptive. Also, exactly how is 7101's signature disruptive (barring the constant changes)? Point out a policy that says you can alter another user's signature at will (outside of your own talk page, anyway, which I will accept). If you can find one that I'm unaware of (or simply missed the section by mistake), then I apologise. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 16:43, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:SIG; it says things about it being inappropriate to use a sig to draw disproportionate attention to one's posts by using a meretricious sig. I didn't refer to your sig as disruptive, although it is in the sense that you're injecting poor code into every page you sign; you're using the font-element which is a deprecated bit of markup. You're also cluttering-up the edit box with unnecessary snot. The faux-sig I used above is a one-off; used only occasionally. Some admin 'approved' your sig? So what; that's just one person's opinion. Most anyone who plays-meek here can get an admin bit; it's not a fucking cop's badge. Some admins are very serious people and their opinions should be listened to, and some just gamed the system. As to reformatting the sigs of others, it is regularly done where there is a need. 7107 is plainly headed for trouble if he doesn't start to listen; I suggest you not hitch your wagon to his. Regards, Jack Merridew 17:10, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding you not calling my sig disruptive, I was talking about this: "*Your* sig is pretty borderline..." Combined with the sentence about cutting back disruptive signatures, I assumed that you were also claiming mine was disruptive. My apologies if that wasn't so. If you can think of a way to make the signature neater without changing its output, then please show me. As for the admin, it was xeno who I would hardly describe as "gaming the system" (and, in my experience, almost all admins aren't). If there was an issue with it (and I did raise some colour and coding queries with him), he'd have said something. Sorry for taking so long to reply. My computer's virtual memory is going completely batty right now and lagging/crashing/closing windows randomly (this would also be longer, but I don't want to risk the window closing again in the middle of it). --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 18:55, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Malicious Edits from Unregistered Users: Please Advise

JF, I'm trying to help my little sister edit a wiki page that she insists contains not just false but purposefully misleading information. She provided me with references, and what she showed me looked legitimate. The problem is my edits are continually being undone by an unregistered user who I suspect is a spammer (I also was editing w/o being logged in until my very last edit). I've gone through some of guides on how to report malicious edits, but so far haven't found anything that seems particularly helpful (I admit I didn't look very far. It is Christmas Eve after all). I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction in terms of how to resolve this. It may not be your cup of tea, but the page in question is Tamaskan Dog. My sister's a bit of an animal rights activist and thinks someone is trying to use the page to promote a puppy mill. Let me know if you would like any more info. Thank you, Rhikter (talk) 23:25, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm looking through it now as best I can (though, as you say, it is Christmas). Can you provide me with a diff of your preferred version and I'll go through the diffs? Also, which IP address are you (just so I can be sure)? To report an edit war, please go here. Remember to read the instructions carefully. If you wish, you can also request full protection of the article here to prevent editing to the page to allow discussion. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 23:37, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, and take your time. I'm in no rush to resolve this. Christmas! I believe the ip of the computer I was using is 67.142.168.148. My sister was editing it herself at first (and not very well from what I understand) then I came in and made sure she had references and that they were cited. This Tamaskan stuff is really not my thing. I'm basically just being used to make sure her edits look nice and are acceptable. Not to say I'm very good at it though. ; ) Rhikter (talk) 04:47, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop warring on User talk:IMatthew; editors are allowed to remove almost any post from their talk page as they wish. Thank you. –Juliancolton | Talk 15:14, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe so, but he cannot ban me from his talk page. Alternatively, he could reread WP:CIVIL and learn how not to call a person a troll (how is telling him not to attack other editor trolling?). I've now stopped assuming good faith with him, to be honest, and am considering bringing him on Wikiquette alerts due to repeated incivility and discourtesy towards a group of editors. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 15:18, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
He can most certainly ask that you stop posting on his talk page, and remove your posts if you choose not to cooperate. It's best to just take a step back and avoid blowing the dispute out of proportion. –Juliancolton | Talk 15:20, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
He insults me every chance he gets. I have always been kind to him and he treats me like garbage. Im sick of it. A little respect and kindness is the only thing that im asking for.--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 15:26, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Second sentence in. Also, I don't believe I am blowing this out of proportion. He has been repeatedly incivil to, taking two names from the hat, December21st2012Freak and Coldplay Expert and is now being incivil to me after I did something as horrifying as ask a very reasonable question regarding this garbage and now again when I told him, my temper fraying slightly, to stop attacking Coldplay Expert over a simple thing such as typos. If you know of another way to get him to try to get him to sit down, shut up and stop insulting others, then I will drop the WQA, because I don't particularly want to get involved on one myself (and only partially because the last one I ended up in, where I was only a neutral party, ended messily). --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 15:27, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, then just avoid interaction with him and we can all move ahead without issue. –Juliancolton | Talk 15:28, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, except he showed up unannounced on December's talk page, whined a bit and left. To my knowledge, December was avoiding interaction with him. iMatthew iniated contact in that scenario. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 15:30, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Edit summaries like this "Coldplay, I don't have any race cars or legos and this talk page isn't a playground. Please use my talk page to discuss matters actually related to Wikipedia, or stay off of it." are unacceptable. For God's sake, im not an 11 year old!--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 15:32, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Im willing to take this to WQA. I have had enough. (Im sure that iMatthew wont even participate in it though)--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 15:38, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As I said, I don't particularly want to go to WQA. I would much prefer talking it out with him and coming to an agreement like that. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 15:42, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
His actions have shown that he will not talk to us unless he if forced to. He only whats to warn us and belittle me.--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 15:49, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Honestly, that's my opinion as well (and this has come from observing him very little, whereas you have had major contact with him on multiple occasions). However, that doesn't make it any less worth trying. At least one admin is aware of the situation now. Maybe that will convince him to open up a reasonable discussion. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 15:54, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'll always be willing to sit down and have a civil discussion with his at either his or my talk page but Im sure he would'nt do it. I hope Julian can find a good settlement for this.--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 15:56, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

← Juliancolton has now removed the entire thread at iMatthew's request. While I am perfectly fine with that, I am concerned about the fact that, without that in his talk page archives, he can potentially claim he was never incivil or something and it would take some serious digging in the revision history to prove otherwise (I think I'm phrasing my concern badly, but I believe that it may be a legitimate concern). --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 16:24, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Look if we need to find it in the future we can and will. However we still need to try to calmly talk to him and see if he can kindly respond back. Then we can all move on.--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 17:02, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, should we just drop the whole thing and wait for him to bite me and or attack others? No. We cant just ignore him becasue he keeps comming to our talk pages and threatening to report us!--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 18:49, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Help

I have been quite concerned with corporate PR techniques for some time now and have shifted my focus at least for the moment to PR in Wikipedia. A company I used to work for hired hundreds of high school aged kids to edit Wikipedia for them (they also wrote Amazon reviews, linked to the product on MSG boards etc.), and I was fired recently for refusing to lie about a product in particular. While we need not mention specific details regarding that case, I was hoping we could begin to make the Wikipedia community aware of the situation, and perhaps eventually change Wikipolicies regarding "reception" sections of games and movies, among other things. Take a look at my Call of Duty MW2 or Prototype Talk Page insertions if you could please. I have seen you around in the game fields when I as writing PR fluff on Wikipedia, and I remember your name well. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.214.123.146 (talk) 01:22, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My coding is long and complex, but the general thing is this: <font color="#009000">[[User:Thejadefalcon|Thejadefalcon]]</font> To find possible colours to use, go here. There's a lot of them, so unless you know exactly what you want, you may be stuck for a while. However, I'd experiment with them first before you save it as your signature. Here, use my sandbox to experiment, where you can see the many attempts to get my signature to be a) nice to look at in my view and b) still readable by everyone else. Also, do you have this page on your watchlist? I don't want to keep bothering you with needless talkback messages. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 19:10, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Of course I have your page on my watchlist. I love talk back messages, btw. After I pick the colors, etc., do I then put the code into the "signature" box on "My preferences" page? Is that how that works? Malke 2010 (talk) 19:15, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you do. Remember to also tick the box saying "Sign my name exactly as shown." --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 19:23, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I'm working on it.Malke 2010 (talk) 19:33, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for fixing the Christmas message on my talk page. Coding is not something I'm fluent with. I understand Cloud Computing but the code thing, not so much. This is my signature in progress. I want to add a couple of lines like yours but I can't get the colors right. So I'm going with this for now until I figure it out. Malke2010 20:44, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Also, now I seem to be missing the "talk" portion of my signature. Oh well. . . Malke2010 20:45, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm. . .apparently the 'talk' thing is in Malke. Interesting how that works. Malke2010 20:47, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Nope. It's in the "Malke" section. The (talk) button vanishes if you have a custom signature. As for the signature itself, it looks very good. Sorry I couldn't help any more while you were fiddling. I had to go search a few hundred links to help someone fix up some userboxes. X.X And as for the coding, if something ever needs to be shunted down so that is doesn't interfere with another template or text of some sort, use {{-}}. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 20:49, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Alien

Why did you delete my post on the alien films? Zoz007 thanks for your answer in advance.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Zoz007 (talk • contribs)

First of all, this is where you need to post to discuss stuff with me. Secondly, my apologies. I got a bit caught up, thought I'd made a comment to your talk page, but obviously not. I removed them because, honestly, they didn't make all that much sense to me. I can't really see why it matters what the title of the film is in Hungarian. It just doesn't seem all that important to me. Another thing is that your section title, "Interesting information," is synonymous with "trivia" which Wikipedia does not allow. However, if you think it is, you're welcome to raise the point on the talk page (preferably this one) and see what other editors have to say about it. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 20:56, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I didnt know that I can contact you here. I am new to Wikipedia. Well I added this information cause it is unique and as a fan for the film for me it is interesting and this is quite common amongst movie fans to search for these kind of information. For the section title I apologize I didn't know. However I think changing the section title would have been enough since this is still an interesting thing about the movie to share and it is not new to wikipedia. Just search for it and you will see that other movies also have information of these kind. But anyway i dont see what is senseless in this. Different French and Italian titles can be posted but Hungarian is senseless?—Preceding unsigned comment added by Zoz007 (talk • contribs)
To my knowledge, titles of films in different languages are only given if they were made or first shown in that country. Also, Alien's Hungarian title is "The eight passanger the death"? Really? That just sounds like an online translator did that one and that is rarely accurate enough to rely on. I'm not trying to drive you away from Wikipedia, I just don't think the Hungarian titles are relevant. As I said, if you would like, go here and ask for some consensus from other editors. If they agree with me, then it stays off. If they think it's notable, then I'm more than happen to accept that. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 21:14, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I will do it but the fact that you dont believe that the Hungarian title is really The eighth passanger the death in hungarian then look for it here on Wikipedia. Go to the Engilsh Alien page and select the language magyar (in engilsh: Hungarian) and you will see the title is A nyolcadik utas a halál... which means The eighth passanger is the death... edit war reporting

how do I report someone for edit warring and uncivil comments? Thanks Malke2010 21:12, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Depends on what it is. Give me a few diffs, please? However, edit warring would usually go to Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring (AN3). However, for a very controversial article, it would likely go to Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents (AN/I) too from what I've seen. Personal attacks are more complex. If it's severe and constant and the user has been warned, it'd be Administrator intervention against vandalism (AIV). If it's just a long-running dispute between users, try Wikiquette alerts (WQA). If it's on an article on a living person, try Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard (BLP/N) too, though I've never been there, so read the instructions for that one very carefully just in case I'm wrong. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 21:20, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also, he's claiming that my editing is edit warring and that I've reverted material which I have not. I've deleted and added material and moved material around, but I have not reverted anything. He's just put up a warning on my talk page. He's very harassing, etc. and never makes any contribution to the page. He just reverts. Thanks for the help. This is frustrating.Malke2010 21:26, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, great, it's a BLP... (sighs) You're going to be mostly on your own for this one (though I'll help out if I think I can). I try not to tread into the minefield that is BLP-articles unless I'm reverting vandalism. Sorry. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 21:30, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
How can I find out if Chhe has ever been blocked? Perhaps he would like a taste of his own medicine.Malke2010 22:38, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Check the block log. Here's mine. Woot! ^.^ Just type in the name in the field. For future reference, go into a user's contribution log. You can find the block log next to their name. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 22:48, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ooohhh, you don't have any blocks. Very impressive. However, your friend Malke has two blocks. Oh no. . . But I don't plan on getting anymore. I reported Chhe to the wikiediquette board. I hesitate to go to the BLP since my edit is correct. There are no legitimate sources verifying what is stated which is why I removed it. I'll just wait, and remove it again later. Thanks for your help. Malke2010 00:54, 29 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Aaron Russo

Admittedly I didn't cite the source, but I did state the facts about the subject matter. It is verifiable so I cannot see why you edited my Aaron Russo piece save some bias policy of wikipedia. People deserve better, to know the truth, not one-sided opinion. This is what happened: It is widely speculated that Aaron Russo did not die of cancer but was assassinated after a radio interview where he was said to have spilt the beans - so to speak - about exposing the Rockerfeller family and their involvement in instigating 9-11. The radio interview survives to this day on many a conspiracy theorists computer and proves beyond doubt the fact that the most powerful families in America, in the world, had vested interests in the atrocities. The main motive being to introduce the terror legislation that stripped people of their rights. It ties in with the Phil Schneider and Bill Cooper murders. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Anglyn (talk • contribs)

What is it with my editor review attracting talk page comments? Is it magnetic or something? This is where you need to post. Secondly, I don't know who the guy is, I don't care. I saw something that looked like a conspiracy theorist's ranting (and still does), so I reverted it. If it's verifiable, give a reference. That's all that's needed. Also, I suggest you need to read this. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 23:20, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
