Commons

Hi Jim - thanks again for all the photos. I have a suggestion that you might like to take up. With the large amount of photos you are uploading, you might at this stage want to sign up to Wikimedia Commons and upload your photos there. This enables your photos to be used in any Wikimedia project and not just Wikipedia - so people from other language projects, Wikitravel, etc. can all use the photos. You need to go here and sign up (as "J Bar") and then you click on "Upload file" on the left and upload your files as per normal. You can use categories like [[Category:Sydney]] for Sydney-related photos and [[Category:Train stations in Sydney]] for railway station pics. This will save those users who want to use them on other projects a lot of time having to download your photos and then reupload them in other projects. I have done all your photos on railway stations up until today, so you won't need to put them up. (JROBBO 06:23, 5 September 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Thank you

Thank you for your recent report at the administrators' noticeboard about a vandal user. You did an excellent job reverting the vandalism and restoring the integrity of the articles. If you encounter a similar situation again, you should do a couple of things differently.

Instead of warning a user "by hand", as you did, you should provide a formal [[WP:WARN|user warning template such as {{subst:uw-vandalism1}}, which gives you the following message:

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although we invite everyone to contribute constructively to our encyclopedia, at least one of your recent edit, such as the one you made to Punchbowl, New South Wales, was not constructive and has been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you.

If the user does not stop, you can escalate to {{subst:uw-vandalism2}}, 3, and 4, and after that you should file a report at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism to block the user. Sometimes you can start the warnings at a number higher than 1 if the vandalism is already severe for multiple edits. In rare cases it is appropriate to block vandals without any warning at all. The general advice is to use your judgment, don't bite the newcomers, and ask the administrators if you need any help (just like you did this time, though I'm actually not an administrator). Let me know if you have any questions. Shalom Hello 06:51, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Federation

If you're interested in more Fed. material, I've just started a Fed gallery at commons. I realized I had shots of all 12 styles, so I might as well go for it.Federation Do you remember the sydney architecture.com site I told you about? They've used all my shots of the Abbey and witches houses, without giving me a credit. Might have some of yours too. I emailed them, asking for a credit, but no response yet.Sardaka (talk) 09:38, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article Hits

I found there's a site that keeps a record of the number of hits each article has had. The suburbs articles have had hundreds of hits per month. Nice to know. I was starting to wonder if anyone read them. The site is at [1] if you want to check it out. Sardaka (talk) 12:20, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Archive shots

Have you seen the archive shots that have been donated by the state library? Tons of stuff you could probably use: [2]

I see you're having problems with deletion nominations. So am I. One of my articles -- actually a list of Blue Mts articles -- has been nominated for deletion. Would you like to take a look and maybe add an opinion? There's a link at the bottom of my talk page. I'll have a look at yours while I'm here.

Hi, we can't do much if you don't provide a rationale for the investigation, and who do you think is related to the user you listed. Thanks! -- lucasbfr talk, checkuser clerk, 08:44, 14 February 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Cronulla

Hi, I have noticed the removal of some of you pics from the Cronulla article. I have reverted this edit to restore the images but when I move back to Sydney in a few weeks time I will be heading down to Cronulla to take some images with a new camera I have recently bought. I hope you won't mind. Adam (talk) 08:59, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Photos

Thanks for telling me about this business. I'll follow it up as soon as I get a bit of time. Might be a case for RfC.

Just had a look and left a message on his talk page. Can you mention some specific pages I can look at?

Article deletions

Thanks for letting me know. Because I left a few message on his user page yesterday (warnings). I have noticed that he has been indefblocked. The name sounds like a vandal name, the kind of name a deletionist[sic] would have. I also warned this user for offending you as well, you may have seen the edit summary [3] . Adam (talk) 08:24, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just had a look at the conclusions and the sock happened to be:
  • Maybe the one that you mentioned and the above are linked

For a while it looked as though the heat was on you but that was proven wrong . Adam (talk) 02:02, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Punctuation in Place Names

I've had a look across Wikipedia including the Manual of Style and other places, including the Geographical Names Board of NSW and there is NOTHING to definitively say NO punctuation in place names. Only the bureaucratic Names Board advises to AVOID using diacritical marks in road names and seeks to eliminate posessives. Such marks - especially apostrophes where places names are named after people with O' at the front of their name - are used across the nation, and the argument is far from done regarding possessives. Even the most common elimination, that of the full stop after St for Saint, is only about 50-50 - check St. Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney. Its NOT a reason by itself to be renaming entire articles without consensus. Mdw0 (talk) 02:43, 19 February 2009 (UTC) [reply]

It WAS you that renamed the St George Stadium article, right? And who remarked 'punctuation not used in place names'? Mdw0 (talk) 06:34, 20 February 2009 (UTC) [reply]
Bureaucracies are always official - thats what gives them their power. That dosent make them right. They follow the policies of a government or a high-ranking official, policies which can be changed. In this case they are going against common usage, so they've got an uphill battle, and for no reason that I can see other than they dont understand how to use punctuation correctly. I agree one full stop really isnt worth fussing sbout, but it was the attaching remaerk and in your replies that no puntuation at all is used in place names that needed correction. Not even the Geographical Names Board says that. Punctuation is most certainly used, especially apostrophes. Punctuation isnt any more antiquated than spelling. It indicates certain unspoken information that is important. And the stadium is most definitely still used - when I find out by which groups I'll edit the article. Mdw0 (talk) 22:27, 22 February 2009 (UTC) [reply]
Brighton-le-Sands has TWO pieces of punctuation in it. Two hyphens. Apostrophes are punctuation too. What about O'Connell, near Bathurst? More punctuation. I'm sure there's a suburb on the Sunshine Coast that has a D' - something like D'Amato. Or what about the D'Entrecasteaux island group or the D'entrecasteaux National Park in WA? But of course that's interstate, out of the clutches of the Geographical Names Board. They seem to have been successful in getting rid of the full stops after St, but saying no punctuation is ever appropriate in place names just doesn't bear up under scrutiny. Rather than remove the punctuation and trying to make something incorrect the standard, the Names Baord should've set an example and standardised correct English punctuation and spelling. Sometimes they even take the posessive apostrophe out without taking out the possesive s - like Paddys River, near Goulburn, which is just stupid. If they were so worried about people spelling it wrong, why would they then go and standardise a version which isn't correct at any time, ever? I don't think standards should be lowered just because a certain percentage of people don't know how to get it right. People who muck up punctuation will also muck up the spelling because the same education or lack thereof applies to understanding of all text, not just the dots and dashes. I see you tagged the IP address 114.76.210.127 as a sockpuppet of 767-249ER. As far as I can tell, the edits from this IP address look like several recent edits by Hamish Ross sockpuppets on User talk:The JPS. What reasons do you have for the 767-249ER connection? עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 09:26, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

He vandalised the user pages of Onorem, J Bar, Trusilver, Loy Wong on the 10th February by making a connection between those users, just as 767 has done in the past. Maybe Hamish Ross is another sock puppet of 767. J Bar (talk) 11:27, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  1. If anything, 767-249ER is a sockpuppet of Hamish Ross, not the other way around - Hamish Ross has an indef block from April 2006, 1 year and 7 months before the 767-249ER account was created.
  2. The records of other 767-249ER accounts/IP addresses don't seem to resemble edits like this (a Hamish Ross sock) and this. Other than the username RossRat51, I don't see a connection between these sockpuppeteers.
  3. I see nothing odd about Hamish Ross attacking Onorem - on February 5th, Onorem was one of the users reverting Hamish Ross's sockpuppets' edits on User talk:The JPS.

Deleter

Hope things settle down now. I was wondering if he was a user called Pixelcounter, who was abusing me recently because he doesn't like my photos. Might be a connection. Trouble is that he (PoorPhoto etc) was partly right, because there are some crappy shots around that don't deserve to be there, but we can't go round acting like a sledgehammer.

Rodd Point

Hi J Bar.

I just noticed your photo of Rodd Point (This one). I noticed the gate under the rock. Do you know what this is and exactly where I can find it. Looks as though it needs to be investigated, maybe. The information on that plaque in the photo might explain. If it is something notable a picture of the plaque could be used as a reference for further info in the article. . Adam (talk) 05:21, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the lead, I've just checked it out. Maybe there should be a brief mention of this in the article seeing as though you've got the photo of it. We could use the link that you have provided as a reference or even hav just a brief mention in the caption and yes I thought it was either a tomb or some kind of tunnel, like this one that I have photographed. It gets about three-thousand-five-hundred hits a month. Adam (talk) 07:30, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

These categories are a bit of a mystery. When I get an email saying a cat is needed, I look at the image page and there's already a cat on it. Then I upload a shot with a cat, and when I look at the page there's no cat on it. However, I'll follow your suggestion about the suburbs cats. Am doing South Coogee now, which seems to have no cat at the moment. PS You sure get hassled by some idiots, by the looks of it.
