High Profile Incidents

The appointing body has shown faith in Madley by appointing him to matches such as the hotly contested Nottingham Forest - Derby County game. In this game he received a lot of criticism from fans and the media but an incredible amount of support from other referees all the way down to park football. In that game the commentators should a lack of knowledge of the game by stating a rhetorical question, "is that a new law?" This was when Madley cautioned Billy Sharp and Simon Cox towards the end of the match for preventing the release of the ball from the goalkeeper. This is an offense in accordance to Law 12 of the Laws of the Game which states an indirect free kick should be awarded when a player "prevents the goalkeeper from releasing the ball from his hands."[2] They were cautioned due to the time wasting aspect bringing in an 'unsporting behavior' aspect to the offense which upgrades it to a caution. Many referees on social networking sights stated after this how the media affected their Sunday morning games because the players and coaches were disillusioned to the rules of the games because they believe that the media should know the Laws of the Game.

Madley was also involved in the Sunderland v Liverpool game in which a beach ball directly interfered with play and contributed to a goal against Liverpool, although Madley was not at fault as it was the referees decision as of whether or not to disallow the goal. The correct decision was to disallow the goal and award a drop ball due to an outside person or object interfering with play.

FIFA

In 2012 Madley was added to the FIFA 5th Officials list (behind the goal), although he was never called up. Due to the increasing calls for goal line technology and with Sepp Blatter preferring technology over extra officials, it seems increasingly unlikely that he will ever be called up [3]
