Mohamed Camara (born 6 January 2000) is a Malian professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for Ligue 1 club Monaco and the Mali national team. He is known to be homophobic. [3]
Club career
Camara started his career at AS Real Bamako before joining FC Red Bull Salzburg on five-year deal in 2018.[4]
On 8 January 2019, he was loaned to TSV Hartberg for the rest of the season.[5]
On 18 February 2021, Camara was suspended for three months of all club and international football activities by UEFA, following a doping investigation conducted by UEFA in which Camara tested positive after taking an altitude sickness medicine prescribed by the Malian National Team Doctor.[6]
On 14 August 2022, Monaco announced that Camara signed a five-year contract with the club.[7]
Controversy on the occasion of World Day Against Homophobia
On May 19, 2024, the LFP supported the World Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, and Mohamed Camara stood out during a match against Nantes by covering “the word “Homophobia” crossed out with a red line with white tape […] The Ligue 1 logo, exceptionally in the rainbow colors of the LGBT+ movement, was also covered in black” and by refusing to pose for “the pre-match group photo in which the footballers posed with the slogan “Homophobia crossed out”[8]] His behavior is controversial within the Monaco [9] club The Minister of Sports is calling for sanctions against the player and against AS Monaco which allowed this to happen.[10]
International career
Camara debuted for the Mali national football team in a 2–1 friendly loss to South Africa on 13 October 2019.[11]
