Marathon is a census-designated place (CDP) in Brewster County, Texas, United States. The population was 455 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Marathon is located at 30°12′27″N 103°14′36″W / 30.20750°N 103.24333°W / 30.20750; -103.24333Invalid arguments have been passed to the {{#coordinates:}} function (30.207529, -103.243258)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.6 km²), all of it land.

The median household income was $22,273, and the median family income was $27,500. Males had a median income of $22,500 versus $20,938 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,884. About 13.2% of families and 23.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 46.7% of those under age 18 and 13.9% of those age 65 or over.

The Old Marathon Coffee shop has reopened under the new ownership of Stephanie House, a Hollins University accredited photographer, and aspiring baker/barista, and partner Jorge Oliva, former chef/partner of Pipons Cocina y Cantina in Ashland Oregon.

Places of Interest

The high-end Gage Hotel (pictured above) is located in Marathon. The town was also a filming location for the movie Paris, Texas directed by Wim Wenders.

Marathon is served by Marathon Independent School District.

Earthquake

On April 14, 1995 a 5.7 magnitude earthquake occurred near Marathon. As of 2008, this was the 2nd largest earthquake recorded in Texas.[1]
