Controversy

Mistreatment allegations

  • On February 19, 2024, 31-year-old Raahib Reza died of cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment at the ICU of Lab Aid Hospital in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. Raahib visited Professor Dr. Mamun Al Mahtab at Lab Aid Hospital for gastric issues. Dr. Mahtab advised him to undergo an endoscopy. Raahib's family alleged that Dr. Mahtab administered anesthesia without reviewing the patient's test reports. They claim the improper administration of anesthesia caused Raahib's cardiac arrest and subsequent death. Responding to the allegations, he claimed "there is no evidence of negligence on his part." Meanwhile, Lab Aid Hospital's public relations officer stated that the entire endoscopy process was supervised by Dr. Mahtab. The anesthesiologist who administered anesthesia was Dr. Mahtab's personal anesthesiologist and not a hospital employee. Dr. Mahtab denied this claim and said the information provided was inaccurate.[32][6]

Lawsuits

  • In May 2021, a Dhaka court ordered an investigation into allegations of negligence against three doctors, including Dr. Mamun Al Mahtab, leading to the death of another physician, Dr. Toufiq Enam. Physiotherapist Aktaruzzaman Mia filed a case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court regarding the death of his son, Dr. Enam, on May 30 while undergoing treatment at BRB Hospital. Dr. Mahtab, a gastroenterologist at Labaid Hospital, was one of the three accused doctors. According to the allegations, Dr. Mahtab conducted an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedure on Dr. Enam after he developed complications following a surgery at Islami Bank Hospital. Dr. Mahtab admitted to treating Dr. Enam for hepatitis B and performing the ERCP with the patient's consent to avoid further surgery's high costs and risks. However, Dr. Enam's condition deteriorated, and he was transferred to BRB Hospital, where he passed away during an operation. Dr. Mahtab denied any negligence, claiming he was unaware of Dr. Enam's pre-existing conditions.[33][34]
