Catlin was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota; she was a triplet, with a brother and sister.[3][4] She earned a degree in mathematics and Chinese from the University of Minnesota, and was studying for a graduate degree in computational and mathematical engineering at Stanford University.[3][5][6] In addition to being a professional cyclist, she was an artist and a violinist.[3][5]

Catlin killed herself March 8, 2019 at her university residence in California. According to her sister, she had suffered a concussion months earlier and "had not been the same mentally since."[7][3][8] Stanford University issued a statement saying that Catlin's roommate found her dead in her residence on campus without any sign of foul play.[9]

Cycling

Catlin started cycling at the age of 17 years.[7] She participated in the UCI Track Cycling World Championships three times and won gold medals in all of them.[4] Catlin won gold medals in the women's team pursuit at the 2016, 2017,[10] and 2018 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. She also won a silver medal in the same event at the 2016 Summer Olympics.[5] She was a member of the women's team of Rally UHC Cycling.[5]
