Also known as gumi, this plant, eleagnus multiflora, is related to autumn olive, russsian olive, and silverberry (see Eleagnus and individual citations). Goumi is a bush with tasty, tart, edible red berries that have a chewable seed. They are commonly grown in Russia, Japan, and Northern China. Chinese people have traditionally considered them to be among a group of "nutraceuticals", or foods that are edible and have medicinal values. They are said to decrease cholesterol, and have other benefits, but Western scientific evidence has yet to confirm this belief. The bush typically grows to be 6 feet wide and 6 feet tall. It is green and deciduous but it is covered with beautiful golden dots, making it quite ornamental as well as edible. In fact the fruit is golden and covered with silver-colored dots until it is ripe, when it turns red. Goumi flowers in April or May and fruits in June and July, making it one of the earlier fruiting plants in the garden. It has become popular in Europe, and it is slowly becoming more popular in the United States among plant collectors of exotic edibles.
