Edgar Ortenberg (born Eleazar Ortenberg, June 17, 1900 – May 16, 1996) was a violinist in the Budapest String Quartet and taught violin at the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[1]
Born Eleazar Ortenberg in Odessa, his teachers included Naoum Blinder at the Odessa Conservatory and Jacques Thibaud in Paris.[1] He was concertmaster of the Odessa Opera Orchestra. He left Russia in 1924 because of anti-Semitism after the Russian Revolution. In 1927 he adopted the first name "Edgar" and formed the Berlin String Quartet.[2] The quartet was reformulated in 1933 by the Nazi government.[1]
In 1933 he moved to Paris, and in 1940, to New York, where he played for the WQXR Orchestra. He was invited to join the Budapest String Quartet in 1936 but declined; he accepted a second invitation in 1944 and performed with the group until 1949. He then moved to Philadelphia where he taught violin at the Settlement Music School until 1988. He died on May 16, 1996, of cancer.[2]
