Calvin Robinson (born October 1985) is a British political commentator, journalist, Anglican deacon, policy advisor and campaigner who is a senior fellow at the think tank Policy Exchange. Robinson worked as a secondary school teacher and became a video games journalist.[1][2] He is a regular contributor to The Daily Telegraph[3] and the Daily Mail.[4] As a commentator, Robinson has contributed to talkRADIO and GB News.
Having trained for ordination in the Church of England at Oxford (2020–2022), he was refused ordination by Jonathan Baker, the Bishop of Fulham, and chose to abandon the church for the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON).[5] He was ordained as a deacon on 25 June 2022 in the Free Church of England.[6]
Early life
Robinson grew up in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. He was educated at High Oakham Primary School and The Brunts Academy, before attending West Nottinghamshire College. He graduated with a degree in computer games design and programming.[7][8]
Career
Robinson was employed in the technology industry before training as a teacher. He taught computer science at the St Mary's and St John's Church of England School in Hendon where he became head of the IT department. In 2017, he was featured in a recruitment advert encouraging people to become teachers.[9][10][11][12] He was a video games journalist. He is also owner of the video games site God is a Geek.[13][14]
In May 2016 and 2018, Robinson sought election to Brent Council and Camden Council respectively, where he stood in the wards of Kilburn and Swiss Cottage for the Conservative Party.[15]
Robinson was the Brexit Party candidate in Broxtowe in 2019, but dropped out to support the Conservative candidate.[16]
Robinson has also held various positions in local news[17] and right-wing political organisations and campaigns, including Defund the BBC, Unite2Leave (a pro-Brexit tactical voting campaign) and Conservative Way Forward.[18] He has contributed to Black Lives Matter UK: An Anthology, a Henry Jackson Society report opposing Black Lives Matter and "hard-left identity politics".[19] Robinson has claimed that his commentary has made him the target of racial abuse.[20] Robinson supports teaching and including black history and lessons concerning black people in schools, but argues it should be taught within the context of British history and not separated into a different category, and opposes including critical race theory in British education.[21][22]
In July 2021, Robinson appeared in an interview on Channel 4 News with the singer and left-wing political activist Billy Bragg on the decision of England players to "take the knee" in a protest against racism.[23] Robinson said the action was "disgusting" and that in taking the knee, the team was promoting "Black Lives Matter, a neo-Marxist, anti-British, anti-family organisation".[24]
Robinson has also worked for talkRADIO and as a presenter on GB News.[25]
