Air Seychelles is the national airline of the Republic of Seychelles. Its head office is located at Seychelles International Airport on the island of Mahé and it operates inter-island and international flights and charter flights.

The airline is currently 40% owned by Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates. The relationship involves Airbus A330-200s joining the fleet and synergies between the airlines.

History

Roy Kinnear, the Air Seychelles Chief Executive Officer.

Establishment

The Seychelles government merged Air Mahé and Inter-Island Airways, creating Seychelles Airlines, on 15 September 1977. It was renamed Air Seychelles in September 1978. The airline began international routes in 1983 to Frankfurt and London.

Restructuring

In February 2012 the United Arab Emirates national carrier, Etihad Airways, invested US$45 million in Air Seychelles for a 40% share in the airline. After operating at a loss for two years in a row, Air Seychelles planned to restructure and re-position itself to return to profit. The airline entered into codeshare agreements with Etihad Airways and started flying to Abu Dhabi in March 2012 to connect to Etihad Airways' network of destinations.

On 16 March 2012, Air Seychelles announced a two-year business plan with the objective of improving the carrier's position. The plan outlines the renewal of Air Seychelles fleet, leveraging Etihad Airways equity partnership – known as Etihad Airways Partners (EAP) (which also includes Alitalia, Jet Airways, Air Serbia and Virgin Australia. The plan includes the introduction of Airbus A330−200 aircraft, increased frequencies to key destinations, closer cooperation with Etihad Airways to identify economies of scale and synergies in staff training, procurement and product development and codeshares with Etihad Airways to connect the Seychelles, through Abu Dhabi, with a global network of passenger and cargo destinations.

On 12 March 2015, Air Seychelles released their results for 2014, declaring US$3.2 million in net profits.

Corporate affairs

Ownership

Air Seychelles was originally owned by the Government of Seychelles. Following problems of management and profitability, Etihad Airways acquired a 40 per cent stake in Air Seychelles in 2012, in a deal worth $45m. The Government of the Seychelles currently owns 60% of the airline and Etihad Airways PJSC, 40%.[3]

Corporate livery

In October 2011, after nearly 25 years in the traditional red, white and green local colours with two white terns (Gygis alba, the national bird of Seychelles), Air Seychelles painted its first Boeing 767-300ER aircraft in the company's new colours. The colours used on the tail end are blue, green, red and white.

In October 2015, Business Insider magazine stated that Air Seychelles has one of the best aircraft liveries. The branding came in as one of the top three "paint jobs in the sky."

Destinations

As of December 2017, Air Seychelles serves the following destinations:[4][5]

Country City/Locality Airport Notes
France Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport
India Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport

The airline also operates charter flights within the Seychelles; to Bird Island (Bird Island Airport), Denis Island (Denis Island Airport) and D'Arros Island (D'Arros Island Airport).[4][5]

Codeshare agreements

Air Seychelles has codeshare agreements with the following airlines:[6]

As of August 2017 the Air Seychelles fleet comprises the following aircraft:[7]

After over two decades of an all-Boeing fleet which included Boeing 767, Boeing 757, Boeing 737 and Boeing 707 aircraft, Air Seychelles acquired the Airbus A330 in 2012 to serve distant destinations. Air Seychelles began domestic operations using Britten-Norman Trislander, Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander and later Short 360 aircraft.[citation needed]

Services

In 2015, Air Seychelles launched HM Connect, an onboard connectivity service allowing passengers to access internet, messaging and calls on mobile phone devices and access to Live TV streaming.

All international routes are operated by Airbus A320 and Airbus A330-200 offering two tiers of service.

Business Class includes upholstered seats that convert into fully flat beds and a dine-on-demand service including a selection of wine and liquors, including the locally produced rum, Takamaka. Each seat comes with a 10.4-inch TV screen.

Economy Class seats have 32-inch seat pitch, personal TV screen, a PC power outlet and a USB port.
