Revision as of 16:05, 29 April 2024

Starting 18 April 2024, floods hit Kenya, affecting people in 21 of the 47 counties.[1] The capital city of Nairobi was particularly affected.[2] The Nairobi River and the Athi River have both burst their banks displacing 40,000 people.[3] Over 110 thousand people are affected.[4][5] At least 38 people have been reported killed.[6][1][5] Additional rainfall was expected in 23–24 April which likely worsened the recovery efforts.[1]

In the wee hours of Monday morning on 29 April 2024, a dam burst in Mai Mahiu, killing an additional 40 people.[7]

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Aid also reported at least 960 livestock and 24 thousand acres of farmland were flooded.[8] The flooding was strengthened in part due to El Niño.[9]
