ubl et c.[edit]

Your edits to Pak-Age-Car aren't the most productive edits I've ever come across. See [[Template talk:Unbulleted list#{{tl:unbulleted list}} or {{tl:ubl}} in infoboxes?]] for one thing. Obviously not a very important issue, but changing all of these seems like pointless work and makes reading the code harder in my opinion. Also, Template:Convert consistently uses {{convert|...}} with a lower case, if that's any indication of how we ought to work. Same goes for all the other capitalizations. If there is some official decision supporting these changes somewhere I apologize, and again, not super important one way or the other.

However, some of your edits go far beyond "copy-editing." When you changed "distinct" to "distinctive" you changed the meaning of the sentence, making it no longer true. The rubber gaskets are distinct (as in plainly visible), but they are absolutely not distinctive, rather they are quite commonplace. Lastly, you changed "There are period spare parts brochures which list the Pak-Age-Car as having been available until 1946" to "Period spare parts brochures list the Pak-Age-Car as having been available until 1946". Your edit implies that the car was available until 1946. The original edit makes mention of these few sources which state otherwise while siding with the majority, which say production ended in 1941.  Mr.choppers | ✎  04:50, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You're not going to get any sympathy here. — Quicksilver (Hydrargyrum)T @ 10:33, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I am not asking for "sympathy", I am telling you that you changed the meaning of several sentences and need to rethink your methods a bit. I also asked you a polite question about spelling out "ubl" and wherefore the need of capitalizing template names? Not sure what the need for your tone is.  Mr.choppers | ✎  01:57, 23 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I still think that a response is in order.  Mr.choppers | ✎  03:05, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please[edit]

You do a lot of useful stuff but please, stop fiddling with capitalization of template names and bypassing redirects. I realize you think it's helpful, or improves efficiency, but it's not and it doesn't. So please. I know I'm not the first to have approached you about this. If you think there are reasons for what you're doing not understood by the rest of us, please explain those reasons calmly. EEng 08:59, 25 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@EEng: It is a harmless side-effect of a Python script that semi-automates article edits. To simplify find-and-replace operations, the first letter of any template the script finds is capitalised, rather than having to perform multiple comparisons with various permutations of capitalisation and spelling. To not capitalize would needlessly increase the script's memory footprint, make it half as fast and somewhat more prone to programming errors. It is harmless, as template names in Wikimedia are capitalised by default anyway and it may reduce server computational overhead slightly. — Quicksilver (Hydrargyrum)T @ 23:52, 25 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
What is this find-and-replace operation being carried out on template names? Can you give a diff exemplifying the function served (beyond the capitalization, which as you note is only a side effect) by this find-and-replaced? EEng 03:40, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The use of a script does not justify bad editing behavior. Unless you're authorized to run a bot, you are responsible for every edit you make, as if you made it manually. If a script or other automation tool does not allow you to exhibit proper editing behavior the solution is to either fix the script or stop using it. It doesn't matter that proper editing behavior makes the script less efficient. What matters is how your edits affect the encyclopedia and other editors.--Srleffler (talk) 18:31, 31 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome back, Hydrargyrum, and thank you for your recent work on Kenny Rogers. I did notice, however, that as part of this cleanup there were a few examples of bypassing redirects and capitalizing template names as well (for instance, here, as well as on another article here). Were these edits performed with your script as well, or were they done manually? You took your wikibreak before you had a chance to explain what the purpose of your script was, but now that you are back, I was hoping you could enlighten us. Courtesy ping to EEng and Srleffler in case they are interested in the answer. Thank you. CThomas3 (talk) 18:03, 22 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The purpose of my script is to make tedious edits and syntax cleanups automatic or semi-automatic. When it runs, it cleans up everything in the article, not just an instance or two as "minor" edits. Now, tell me, why are you, EEng and Srleffler engaged in wikistalking? You know, this is against Wikipedia policy and I would greatly appreciate if you would stop it. — Quicksilver (Hydrargyrum)T @ 18:18, 22 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
What has been said above has merit; (semi)automated scripts with side effects should be corrected, especially when concerns have been raised. WP:HOUNDING is a serious accusation that needs to be backed with evidence and reported at the Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents. I would also recommend being aware of WP:BOOMERANG (this is not a comment as to if it would apply, just a general FYI to consider when making reports). I would also urge you to review WP:BOTPOL as this activity sounds like it would probably fall under it. Running an unauthorized bot is also a serious issue. --TheSandDoctor Talk 18:46, 22 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I never said the script was automated. As a matter of fact, it is called a "computer program", not a "script" and it runs external to Wikipedia. Can any of you guys read and comprehend simple ENGLISH? — Quicksilver (Hydrargyrum)T @ 19:00, 22 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
WP:Wikilawyering. Experienced editors are trying to help you avoid trouble and contribute meaningfully. Please listen. EEng 19:19, 22 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't actually matter whether the script is fully automated or whether it runs external to Wikipedia. Since you can read and comprehend simple English, please review Wikipedia:Bot policy, which states clearly right at the top that it "covers the operation of all bots and automated scripts used to provide automation of Wikipedia edits, whether completely automated, higher speed, or simply assisting human editors in their own work". --Srleffler (talk) 20:37, 22 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hydrargyrum, let me just respond in general to the complains listed above. You have had multiple editors concerned with your computer program/script/"piece of code that pointlessly replaces lowercase template calls with uppercase template calls". It doesn't matter what you call it, people have issue with it. Now, the sensible thing here is to acknowledge that they might actually have a point, and at the very least discuss the matter in a calm and civil matter. I was asked to comment, but here are my thoughts (as both admin and BAG)
Replacing {{example}} with {{Example}} is a pointless exercise, and one that traditionally the Wikipedia Community as a whole has frowned upon, especially when edits like that are the only edits that happen on a page. Now, some people combine these sorts of minor/cosmetic edits with "non-minor" edits and it's usually not a big deal, but you've been called out on it by multiple people, so it clearly has become an issue. This seems like a silly hill to die on. Primefac (talk) 19:45, 22 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Why have you continued this activity despite the above discussion and being previously blocked for logged out editing to avoid scrutiny in continuing to do these actions? It has been fairly firmly established that these are outside of current practice — and, by your own admission, policy — and should not be done. --TheSandDoctor Talk 01:01, 18 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
"... continued this activity ... to avoid scrutiny ..."? I have no idea what you're talking about. Explain. — Quicksilver (Hydrargyrum)T @ 03:56, 18 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Jesus Christ, you're even fucking with others' posts right here in the middle of this very goddamn discussion! [1] Can't you control yourself? EEng 14:54, 18 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@EEng: — I'll remind you, this is my talk page, not an article talk page. I will do anything I want here, including making corrections and deleting any vulgarities you write here. — Quicksilver (Hydrargyrum)T @ 15:42, 20 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, WP:TPO says you shouldn't modify other's talk page comments (even on your own page) unless you are doing wholesale removal, fixing syntax, or other "readability" issues. If I want {{t}} to be used insead of {{tl}}, then leave it be. Primefac (talk) 15:47, 20 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Edits such as this one is why you got blocked. Changing all of the color codes to all caps - why? Adding spaces to "<br/>" - why? Removing spaces from citation templates - why? All just pointless work which benefits no one. Stop using your script (or computer program) or turn off these pointless functions.  Mr.choppers | ✎  15:54, 18 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Mr.choppers: — Please study HTML, XHTML and CSS syntax before you criticize. Moreover, capitalization changes can happen when case-insensitive global search-and-replace operations are performed, and this is true with any text editor, such as Notepad, Notepad++, gedit, even the optional source editor built into Wikipedia; you should have known that. You seem to have a fixation on what the vast majority of Wikipedia editors consider non-issues. Now, I'm asking you to stop it. — Quicksilver (Hydrargyrum)T @ 15:42, 20 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE March newsletter[edit]

Guild of Copy Editors March 2020 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the March newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2019. All being well, we're planning to issue these quarterly in 2020, balancing the need to communicate widely with the avoidance of filling up talk pages. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below.

Election results: There was little changeover in the roster of Guild Coordinators, with Miniapolis stepping down with distinction as a coordinator emeritus while Jonesey95 returned as lead coordinator. The next election is scheduled for June 2020 and all Wikipedians in good standing may participate.

January Drive: Thanks to everyone for the splendid work, completing 215 copy edits including 56 articles from the Requests page and 116 backlog articles from the target months of June to August 2019. At the conclusion of the drive there was a record low of 323 articles in the copy editing backlog. Of the 27 editors who signed up for the drive, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

February Blitz: Of the 15 editors who signed up for this one-week blitz, 13 completed at least one copy edit. A total of 32 articles were copy edited, evenly split between the twin goals of requests and the oldest articles from the copy-editing backlog. Full results are here.

March Drive: Currently underway, this event is targeting requests and backlog articles from September to November 2019. As of 18 March, the backlog stands at a record low of 253 articles and is expected to drop further as the drive progresses. Awards will be given to everyone who copyedits at least one article from the backlog. Help set a new record and sign up now!

Progress report: As of 18 March, GOCE copyeditors have completed 161 requests in 2020 and there was a net reduction of 385 articles from the copy-editing backlog – a 60% decrease from the beginning of the year. Well done and thank you everyone!

Election reminder: It may only be March but don't forget our mid-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 June. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, Reidgreg, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist
