Taxobox templates

How do I change the taxonomy that is displayed?[edit]

By default, an automated taxobox displays only the taxonomy necessary to give context to the taxon in question. This includes any major taxonomic ranks: that is, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species; and the immediate parent of the taxon in question, even if not a major rank. In some cases, editors may choose to display additional taxa:

  • To display more minor taxa, increase |display parents= (default = 1, meaning "immediate parent only").
  • To force a given taxon to appear in all of its children's taxoboxes, add the line "|always_display=true" to its taxonomy template page. This should be a very rare addition.
  • To force a given taxon to appear in only some of its children's taxoboxes is a little more complicated, but should also rarely be needed.
    1. Create a duplicate taxon at "Template:Taxonomy/taxon/displayed", with |always_displayed=true
    2. Modify the children that should display the given taxon so that their taxonomy template has |parent=taxon/displayed instead of |parent=taxon.
  • |display parents= should be used only to display minor ranks above the taxon that is the subject of the article and below the next major rank. |display parents= should not be used to display minor ranks above the next major rank. If it is desirable to display a minor rank for all subordinate taxa (e.g., a subfamily in species articles), set |always_display= in the taxonomy template rather than using |display parents= in the articles for each subordinate taxon. In the case where a single article cover multiple taxonomic ranks (due to monotypy), |display parents= may be used to display the minor rank parents of the highest rank taxon covered by the article.
