Object history
Deutsch: Zell ist wohl eine Gründung des Klosters Gengenbach. In die Zeit der Zugehörigkeit zu den Staufern dürfte die Entwicklung zur Stadt eingesetzt haben, die Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts abgeschlossen war. Zell war fortan bis zum Anfall an Baden 1803 die kleinste aller Reichsstädte. Alle Siegel, angefangen vom ältesten, ab 1351 nachweisbaren Typar, und frühe, aus dem 16. Jahrhundert stammende Wappendarstellungen zeigen folgerichtig den Reichsadler ohne Beizeichen. Als Feldfarbe erscheint zuweilen Silber. Lediglich im frühen 19. Jahrhundert waren kurzfristig Siegel mit dem badischen Wappen allein oder als Brustschild auf dem Adler in Gebrauch. Mit der Vereinigung von Unterharmersbach und Zell zu einer Gemeinde unter dem alten Stadtnamen am 1. Januar 1975 hatte das Stadtwappen seine Gültigkeit verloren, wurde zusammen mit der Flagge aber am 3. Oktober 1977 vom Landratsamt Ortenaukreis neu verliehen.
