My Dear Madam: My nails are brittle, breaking almost at a touch. Can you tell me what to do for them? ANNA.
All such local troubles are due, in part, to the constitutional condition. A building up of the system will help correct it. For local treatment use the following: 30 to 60 grains tin oleate, 1 oz. lard or fatty base. This overcomes the brittle and split condition and relieves agnails. Nothing better has been found.
Is there any cure for cold-sores, or fever-blisters? LUCY.
Your trouble, "herpes facialis", may be relieved in a number of ways. A solution of borax, to which has been added a grain or two of cocaine and of morphine, is a good application, if the fever blisters are on the lips. Astringent lotions of tannic acid or alum are very beneficial. However, I believe the best reults are obtained by using hydrozone and glycozone. The former is a powerful bactericide, and can be applied with perfect safety; in fact, is used internally in many cases.
The latter is a healing agent. First cleanse the surface well with warm water. Then apply the hydrozone until very little foam generates, after which apply the glycozone on lint or absorbent cotton. Repeat the treatment morning and evening.
My work is such that my nails are constantly stained. Is there a bleach which is not injurious? MARTIN.
Such stains can be removed only by an acid. Lemon juice is the least injurious. If it seems too severe for your skin, dilute with a very little rosewater. If you will follow the acid by an application of good skin food (mutton suet is excellent for this purpose) to apply the oil removed by action of the acid, you will obtain better results.
