It should at least changed so that a user has to agree, otherwise it would be possile to usurpate his username in case of a long illness. Nevertheless, to maintain a consistent identity (for purposes of memory if nothing else) I have since very early on 'branded' myself with this name. My sig reads simply Mask, those I know on wiki refer to me by it. At this point in time (6 years since the last of 3 contributions this account has (1 revert of vandalism, 1 npov tag on an article, and 1 complaint on that articles talkpage) all good but inconsequential changes, none of which currently has any derivative parts still in the project) I would like to usurp it, it would make my login process simpler by being my 'default' like most other sites as well as bring my account name in line with my presented identity on wiki.

Non-crat opinion: I'd decline it as well. Although there has been a recent, imho unfortunate, trend to one-character usernames (especially unicode symbols), I don't think it should be encouraged by fulfilling usurp requests. While the caret is a normal character on keyboards, the use of the name in a signature might be confusing. Also, as Courcelles points out, there is a hewiki user with edits, so they have the potential claim to the SUL account which would be denied if this request was fulfilled.
