Recently all article in Category:Ohio high school sports conferences have been listed for deletion; but the creators were not notified of the process. Hi! One doable, one maybe doable.

  1. There are some in Category:Châteaux in France that need the museums wikiproject banner removed. These were left over from the less than thoroughly refined tagging of Category:Museums. I think this is doable and probably easy.

  1. In Category:Unassessed-Class Museums articles there are 500+ articles remaining. If possible I'd like those that are either classed as stub/start for another project and/or have some form of {{stub}} tag within the article to be classed as stub/start for the museums project. They already have a museums banner. Is this doable? I'm not sure, especially about the internal stub classing because there are so many different kinds of stub tags.

List of the most active WikiProjects

For a WikiProject cooperation project, I'd like a list of the most active WikiProjects. It's quite hard to measure this, but I'd say the average bytes/month for the past half year on the project talk page would be a good measure. Any other idea would be great, too. I just know that it'll probably require a bot to do some analysis :)

WikiProject-specific orphan tagger

Hi, WikiProject Orphanage is wondering if we could get a bot to run through Category:All orphaned articles and put together lists/categories of orphan sorted by WikiProject/Portal. That way we could refer those categories of orphan en masse to the editors with the most experience in that area, and get their aid for the ones that we aren't knowledgeable enough to de-orphan. If there is no standardized format, then I guess the bot would have to be able to recognize each template individually. I don't see that sort of parsing as being a big deal, though. As for being on more than one project, there's no reason why the bot couldn't put the orphan on more than one WikiProject's orphan list. If parsing the talk pages for the project templates does turn out to be too much of a problem, the bot could just go by the categories on the article, printing out lists of orphans in each category, and then WikiProject Orphanage can submit those lists to the various WikiProjects by hand.--Aervanath lives in the Orphanage 17:58, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

WP:LGBT newsletter delivery assistance needed

Well, I'm a big ol' dorkus. I don't know what I'm doing, and I'd rather get someone who is familiar with bots than end up spamming every English user on the site. Our erstwhile newsletter delivery method, Satyrbot, is on extended holiday with its owner, User:SatyrTN, until his house is completed. He is incommunicado until then. Image tagging cleanup: Publicity photos with missing fair use rationale

I have been going through Category:Publicity_photographs_with_missing_fair-use_rationale and I realized that many of these images actually do have a fair use rationale but do not have the correct parameter added in to remove them from this category's list.

I would like to know if a bot could go through that category and do the following:

IF the image has both {{Non-free promotional}} and the string "{{Non-free use rationale"
THEN change {{Non-free promotional}} to {{Non-free promotional|image_has_rationale=yes}}

I would only be concerned about incorrectly formatted fair use rationales slipping through, but that is a risk I am willing to take because every page I have found with both parameters has a correctly created non-free rationale in place.

The goal for this request is to make Category:Publicity photographs with missing fair-use rationale more accurate to remove the photos from the list that actually do have a fair use rationale that utilizes the {{Non-free use rationale}} template. I have been manually going through each image so far and every case like this just needed the parameter added in to get it off the list.

Please let me know if a bot can streamline this action.

Open Refs

Is there a bot already in existence that can detect open refs? That is, detect that a <ref> is not followed by a </ref> (perhaps confined to recent edits, I don't know). I need a selected list of old AfDs

There is a Deletion sorting page for In popular culture articles, but through various other pages, I have discovered this list is vastly incomplete. I would like to be able to have a list of all the deleted IPC articles so I can go through page histories and see if there is possibly any content worth restoring. Making a list like this by hand (going through each and every day of the AfD history) would be extremely tedious. I do trust the admin's deletion decision, I trust they believed the article subject was not notable enough for a seperate article to exist. However, that's not to say that some of this content isn't suitable for a focused and selective list in the parent article. For example, some of the deleted article concern major works of literature, and I'm sure their importance is highlighted with a list of major derivative works.
Also, I don't want to view the deleted article, I want to view the parent article history and see where the IPC content was split out. Based on the quality of the content at that point, I may selectively restore some content, or perhaps ask if the deleted article could be userfied. Bot needed to clean up 50,000+ disambiguation pages

Due to the fact that many disambiguation pages predate Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages), and the fact that many/most editors are not familiar with the manual of style, about 2/3 of our disambiguation pages need some sort of cleanup.

A sizeable amount of this cleanup (though not all) could be done with a bot. Each entry in a disambiguation page is supposed to start with an asterisk, end with no punctuation, contain only one blue linked term, and this blue link should generally not be piped (so clumsy article titles like Mercury (element) should look exactly like that). In addition, DAB pages should contain no external links, no references sections, and (with a few exceptions) be in no categories except Category:Disambiguation.

It would be very helpful to have a bot which could check all 100,000 DAB pages, removing periods from the end of entries, removing categories, converting numbered lists to bulleted lists, commenting out external links and references sections, and in those cases where it would be possible for the bot to do so, removing extra blue links and inappropriate piping of article titles. I estimate that the bot would end up doing cleanup on about 50,000 pages.

This has been discussed on Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation and, while there is agreement that this needs doing, none of us have the technical knowhow to write our own bot. --Xyzzyplugh (talk) 17:40, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

I'm not entirely up to speed on the exact set of categories which are currently considered appropriate, this would have to be figured out before the bot could start removing any categories, with the help of the folks at Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation. There are some extra considerations:
  1. Sentences should end with a full stop, and there are disambiguation pages with sentences.(eg)
  2. There are disambiguation pages with two relevant (disambiguating) blue links on the same line (eg). New entries should be made for the second entry.
  3. Pipes are often used to good effect, and are fairly common when the blue link occurs after the red link. Removing the pipe without altering the description may result in loss of information, nonsensical descriptions,(eg) or a redlink.(eg)
  4. Where there are multiple blue links it is not always obvious which one should remain(eg)

There are definitely extra considerations. In the first example you gave, though, the manual of style says "Even when the entry forms a complete sentence, do not include commas or periods at the end of the line". As to your other concerns, yes, the bot will not be able to clean up every instance of piping or every entry with multiple links, but will instead only be able to do so in situations which appear to be straightforward and which shouldn't cause problems.
Basically, it should revolve around looking at whether linked terms match the title of the disambiguation page. If the page is Voodoo, then entries would only be cleaned of extra links if they have exactly one blue-linked term which contains the article title. If an entry has no blue linked terms which contain "Voodoo", or more than one, then the bot can't know what to do with that and should do nothing.
As for piping, it should only remove piping in straightforward situations. Probably 95% of the inappropriate piping involves either changing something like [[Sequim, Washington]] to [[Sequim, Washington|Sequim]], or [[Tarzan (1999 film)]] to [[Tarzan (1999 film)|Tarzan]], and these should be fairly straightforward to fix (the only complication being the odd ways editors try to add italics around the name of the film, which a bot should also be able to deal with.(Note, for those who might not be familiar with the manual of style - the bot would be removing the piping, not adding it) --Xyzzyplugh (talk) 22:06, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
Just to clarify that first point - the solution is not to remove the full stop from the second sentence, but to convert the two sentences into one and then remove the full stop (that's a job for a human). There are problems with that Voodoo example. For instance assume the James Kelly disambig page had only two links, it should still link to the article Jim Kelly (martial artist) which means the same thing, but doesn't include the phrase, as well as the article James M. Kelly (politician) which wouldn't be seen as a match following a simple comparison. --T-rex 00:08, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
As I said above, if the entry does not have a blue linked term containing the article title, then the bot shouldn't be doing anything with the links in that entry. So the bot would probably do nothing regarding both of the entries that you mentioned. This is not a problem, as we would rather have a bot which fixes 90% of the problems correctly than have one which fixes 95% of problems, but messes up many of those other 5%. (A further comment, added afterwards - I'm not sure I'm understanding you here, but you may be thinking the bot will be removing entries entirely. It won't. The bot will only be de-linking and de-piping. If one of the entries on the James Kelly page says nothing but "Jammmees Kelly iz a rad dudde!!", the bot will not be removing that) --Xyzzyplugh (talk) 09:53, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

You haven't explained what problems you think the bot would cause. If the bot saw "*[[James Kelly (pirate)]] (died 1701)", it wouldn't change that in any way. If it saw "*[[James Kelly (pirate)|James Kelly]] (died 1701)", it would remove the piping. If it saw "*[[James Kelly (pirate)]] (died 1701), English [[pirate]] active in the [[Indian Ocean]]", it would de-link "pirate" and "Indian Ocean" (Or at least, that's my plan). --Xyzzyplugh (talk) 18:30, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Why not have a bot dump the differing types of pages into a list? Start with the simpler one (no bullets, nothing in bold) and then another for the piping issue (i.e., the first word after the asterisk or the word in bold should not be piped). That way, you can manually see what's wrong and if there's larger patterns. This seems too hard for a bot to fix but really easy for a bot to identify. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 18:27, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
I'm not exactly sure what you're suggesting. Are you saying that the issues I described above would be too hard for a bot to fix, or that the bot could identify other issues which it couldn't fix and flag those pages? If the bot was going to clean up 50,000 pages and then mark thousands of others as needing cleanup, that would be fine. If the bot was merely going to mark every page which needed cleanup as needing cleanup, that would be totally useless, as we already know that 60+% of disambiguation pages need cleanup. I'd be interested in doing this. I'm not a member of the WikiProject, but I did a lot of disambiguation cleanup at one point and the MoS is straight forward enough. I suggest that as a compromise, the bot should correct easily fixed formatting problems (inappropriate bolding, numbering, simple punctuation, etc.), while building a list of potentially problematic pages for the more complex issues (piped links, punctuation where multiple sentences are involved, and so forth). — xDanielx T/C\R 00:23, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

I like your idea of fixing the obvious problems and building a list for the more complex issues. Unsupervised bot editing isn't always the best answer for fixing problems on Wikipedia. I should have something working within a few days. As a totally random aside, has anyone else found that libxml2 doesn't like the XML generated by the MediaWiki API? "1990's [sic]" etc. cleanup

I think that a relatively easy spelling correction that could be done would be changing "1990's" (etc.) to "1990s" (etc.). I say relatively easy as there are only so many decades that you would need to enter and as it is never "1990's", there should be no objections to changing such words (unlike an "its" / "it's" bot, say). Archive bot for Wikipedia:Editor review

There are two parts to archiving an editor review, and the order in which they are done is inconsequential.

  1. Link to the editor review page in Wikipedia:Editor review/Archive.
  2. Untransclude the editor review from the main editor review page.

Previously I have done both tasks myself. I've stopped doing it, and it's apparent that nobody else wants to do it either.

There are a couple of possibilities. One way is to place archive templates, which have not yet been created for this specific purpose, on an expired editor review page. Then a bot sees the archive templates and untranscludes the page and links to it in an archive list. This is similar to the process at Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets. It may be necessary in this scenario to switch to a "by month" format instead of the current "by username" format.

Another way is to have the bot automatically add a link to the archive in Wikipedia:Editor review/Archive as soon as the request is filed, or at a designated time thereafter, e.g. if the bot runs once a week. Then a human untranscludes the editor review page at his or her discretion. This might be better because it's a less drastic change from the current system.

I don't know whether bots can be programmed to archive pages based on the alphabetical order of a subpage title. In other words, will a bot know how to sort Wikipedia:Editor review/WikiMan53 before Wikipedia:Editor review/WikipedianProlific just based on the fact that M comes before p? If yes, that's probably what I want. If not, switching to archiving based on month of the request will preserve some archiving system without requiring undue human intervention. Thanks Betacommand. Right now the archive actually uses the first edit timestamp, i.e. when was the page created. I would think you could program that just as easily as the last edit timestamp. I would prefer alphabetical but that doesn't really matter to me. What I do think is important, though, is that the reviews that get archived have a decent amount of reviewing; frequently I won't archive an old review if it only has a few lines. Of course the bot won't be able to tell when someone's gotten a lengthy review but it's all total crap, but having the bot will probably be worth it, and at least a length requirement would be a start. (Unindent) I think the best way to do this is to create an archive template for editor reviews. That way, a human decides that the page should be archived, and the bot takes care of the rest - same as with WP:SSP. Next steps

A lot has happened in the last month. It's probably best if someone other than Betacommand creates this bot.

I'm going to create Template:Era (stands for "Editor review archive") to be placed at the top of editor review pages. A human will add this archive. The bot will not do this automatically.

A bot should occasionally scan Wikipedia:Editor review for pages with the archive template, and will untransclude that editor review from the main page, and will add it to Wikipedia:Editor review/Archive according to alphabetical order. If possible, add it according to exact alphabetical order. (From the sorting at WP:O and WP:DEP, it would seem possible for a bot to do this.) If that's not possible, then ask the bot to find the first letter of the subpage, and edit the section of the archive page corresponding to that letter of the alphabet. (That should be easy to do.) Either way, it will more or less maintain the current system while not creating too much workload for humans.

Category:Fooian football clubs

Is there any chance that someone could create a bot that would move all "Fooian football clubs" categories (which can be found in Category:Football (soccer) clubs) to Category:Football (soccer) clubs by country? "oldrequestbot" for Articles requested for more than ...

Wikipedia:Articles requested for more than a year and Wikipedia:Articles requested for more than two years are difficult to maintain because they require daily updates and decision making. I believe that a bot perform the task. Basically, the bot would review all posts at Wikipedia:Requested articles (including all subpages) that are (as of today) between June 18, 2006 and June 17, 2007. If the requested article still is red linked, then the bot would need to determine whether the request had already been posted at Wikipedia:Articles requested for more than a year and Wikipedia:Articles requested for more than two years. If not previously posted at Wikipedia:Articles requested for more than a year or Wikipedia:Articles requested for more than two years, then the bot would post the requested article at Wikipedia:Articles requested for more than a year in a predetermined format and predetermined location. The bot also would review all posts at Wikipedia:Requested articles that are (as of today) before June 17, 2006. The bot would perform the same screening as for the one year old request. If the requests are more than two years old, the bot would post the requests at Wikipedia:Articles requested for more than two years. I did a search sort for cemetery articles not listed in List of cemeteries. I posted the results at User:Bebestbe/New cemeteries. The trouble we're having (see this post is that the list on my user page isn't organised by geographic location, making it very difficult to add the info to List of cemeteries. Can you get a bot to organised User:Bebestbe/New cemeteries by geographic location and perhaps add text next to each entry that would make it easier to add the info to List of cemeteries? Well because there were not that many pages in the category I just went through each page opening a tab in mozilla for each. Then went through each one and added the template and then clicked on the save button on them all (tabs are very usefull). Image tagging cleanup: Publicity photos of logos with missing fair use rationale

This is a modified request of a similar request that was fulfilled one week ago. The new request involves images with a valid {{logo fur}} tag.

I have been going through Category:Publicity_photographs_with_missing_fair-use_rationale and I realized that many of these images actually do have a fair use rationale but do not have the correct parameter added in to remove them from this category's list.

I would like to know if a bot could go through that category and do the following:

IF the image has both {{Non-free promotional}} and the string "{{logo fur"
THEN change {{Non-free promotional}} to {{Non-free promotional|image_has_rationale=yes}}

I would only be concerned about incorrectly formatted fair use rationales slipping through, but that is a risk I am willing to take because every page I have found with both parameters has a correctly created non-free rationale in place.

The goal for this additional request is to make Category:Publicity photographs with missing fair-use rationale more accurate to remove the photos from the list that actually do have a fair use rationale that utilizes a Non-free use rationale template. I have been manually going through each image so far and every case like this just needed the parameter added in to get it off the list.

Please let me know if a bot can streamline this action.

In addition, all category or template talk pages need to be tagged however, those pages may use {{WikiProject Ships|class=Template|importance=NA}} or {{WikiProject Ships|class=Category|importance=NA}} respectively. I've looked through the tree on this category and don't see anything that would create a large mess and it could be possible that the majority of pages are already tagged for the project but I figure this is the best way to get started. Automatic template updating bot for lv.wiki

In the Latvian Wikipedia I have to update every Formula One driver's infobox after each race. Most of them only need to add 1 to their current races. Some also have to add 1 to podiums, pole positions or wins. I think that via a semi-automatic bot (enabled by me after the race) a list of articles inputted by me could have the race value added by 1 and, if I choose to, also the podium, win or pole value could be updated. Anti-Hagger bot

I consider this to be a fairly urgent request. Our featured articles are being vandalized at breathtaking rates (i.e., like almost once every two minutes) with redirects to Hagger?, or something like it. This kind of thing should be fairly easy for a bot to catch, and we need one, as sadly our communication structure it too slow and stupid to actually allow functional semiprotection on a featured article. My proposal is thus:

  1. The bot monitors the featured article, and automatically reverts any edit redirecting it elsewhere.
  2. The bot automatically reverts an edit removing nearly all of the content from a featured article and replacing it with anything containing the word "Hagger".
  3. The bot could automatically revert any move by a new account redirecting to a nonexistant page containing the term "Hagger" or "Haggar".
  4. If we want to make it really intricate, we could allow the term "Hagger" and "Haggar" to be fluid, in case vandals move onto another term.

Again, this is a fairly urgent request, as our featured articles are being destroyed by this. The Evil Spartan (talk) 07:53, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

When I created {{Australia-museum-stub}} (in a slightly out of process manner, because I didn't know there was a process but that's been fixed) enough articles were tagged to save the stub/cat but I think a number of articles were missed. Is it possible for a bot to see the overlap where an Article's talk page contains {{WikiProject Australia}} and the article has the template {{museum-stub}} and convert the museum stub template to {{Australia-museum-stub}}? Help modifying ProteinBoxBot pages

Hello, I'm writing to see if anyone is interested in helping out our ProteinBoxBot effort on a relatively quick timeline. (Obviously, PBB is a bot itself, but the primary developer completed his master's thesis and no longer actively working on the project.) The problem is that the template code for PBB pages is quite complex, and for formatting issues, we had to put it at the top of the page. For newbie editors, of course, this is pretty intimidating (see this source, for example). With the intent of moving the human-readable content to the top, I made this change (coupled with the creation of Template:PBB and Template:PBB/ITK (gene)). Would anyone be interested in helping to code a bot to automate that change for the ~9000 pages which transclude {{PBB_Controls}}? Specifically, this would involve moving the PBB_Controls template to the bottom of the page, removing the GNF_Protein_box template from the main namespace page, and creating a subpage of Template:PBB with the GNF_Protein_box content.

Why the quick timeline? We have a paper appearing in a science journal on July 8, and I expect there to be a spike in the number of people who try to edit those pages. If we have those gene pages cleaned up a bit as described above by then, I think we'll have a higher hit rate of getting new editors to stay...

WP:CHICAGO bot assistance needed

A few weeks ago I made the same request below and curiously someone attempted to help using AWB. That is not what I want. I need a bot to run every few days. It seems User:SatyrTN and his bot User:SatyrBot are no longer active. WP:CHICAGO needs articles in WP:CHIBOTCATS tagged with {{WikiProject Chicago}}. It would also be helpful if the bot autostubbed talk pages that have templates from other projects with class=stub. I think his bot also tagged newly found articles with FA, FL, and GA parameters and added them to class when it added the template. I saw it ran but did not recognize the redirect {{ChicagoWikiProject}} and thus many pages had {{WikiProject Chicago}} added as a duplicate. I have started removing some duplications. You probably are not aware but the user Cwii, has left wikipedia (see thier talk page). I don't know how much the bot has done.
I use AWB and the best i possibly could do is go through a list of Chicago stub articles and tag them with the template and auto assess as 'stub class'. Create a list of all the articles using this, and then take the stub articles out of the list. And then run the bot through the rest of the articles simply tagging them with the template (no assessment). Obviously there are a large ammount of articles so running it through AWB is going to take a while. As for running it on a regular basis the best i could probably do is monthly. You might want to look for someone else to write somthing using maybe python or somthing else (im just learning pyton so theres no way i could do it), that way it won't take as long, because AWB can be slow at times, espically if im using the internet at the same time. I read that some did try to help you, using AWB but thats not what you wanted, and now i think about it, it could take ages to go through every article in that cat. Any idea how many articles?? Someone to do a database sweep for a CSS class

Per this discussion, I suspect that this CSS is unused and should therefore be removed from MediaWiki:Common.css, but we'd be mad not to do a thorough sweep first. Can anyone with a database dump and/or toolserver access have a check through the most recent versions of all pages for this CSS class, before we go break anything by taking it out? For that matter, if anyone fitting the above description is really bored, could you do the same for all the CSS classes in Mediawiki:Common.css?? I'll try to explain. User:Jerem43 is making sub-projects with their own templates. So in the case of restaurant articles, Template:WikiProject Food and Drink/Foodservice taskforce is good enough (you don't need to also add WPFOOD, because Template:WikiProject Food and Drink/Foodservice taskforce is part of WPFOOD). When putting together templates and categories for the RfA Review, I created a category Category:Editor Responses to RfA Review, which should actually be Category:Wikipedian responses to RfA Review. CFD approved a speedy rename, and the new category is set and ready, but there are over 200 userpages to move from Editor Responses to Wikipedian responses. I need a parameter added to WPFood

Hello, I would like to ask if some one can have a bot run an errand for the The WikiProject Food and drink Foodservice task force.


I would like to have a bot please do some tag changes if that is possible:

  1. On all articles in the category Category:Restaurants, and all of its sub-categories, have it modify the project tag by adding the |Foodservice=yes parameter on the end of the {{WikiProject Food and drink}} or {{WPFOOD}} tags.
  2. On any article in the restaurant category tagged with the {{WikiProjectFoodservice}} or {{WPF}} tags, delete those tags.

Suggesting "DateBot"

I have recently noticed that there seems to be no bot that deals with dates on tags. This means that when a tag like Template:Cleanup is place on a page it is sometimes placed like {{cleanup}} but should be written like {{cleanup|date=July 2008}} with the date information. Could there be a bot made that places the current date on the tags automatically? The only problem I can see with this is it would have to keep the current month and year up-to-date but otherwise I would think it would be simple.... or at least I hope it will be.

Yep Smackbot already does this and so do many other bots but they get their articles from different sources.

Not sure what you are referring to - Smackbot seems to do thousands of edits on some days. Usually it dates new tags within a few days (judging by my watchlist). Mark Prindle reviews

Dear bot owners, would it be possible a bot can be programmed to remove Mark Prindle reviews within Album Infoboxes? I wish to bring to your attention a current discussion Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Albums#Mark_Prindle, involving the notability of inclusion of these Mark Prindle reviews. Apparently the main Mark Prindle article was deleted back in January, see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mark Prindle over lack of notability. These reviews have been added to over 146+ album articles and would be manually time consuming to remove. The editor who originally deleted a Mark Prindle review has no desire to manually delete every one of them and basically I don't wish to spend time doing this either. Suggestions? In regards to the 146 articles, are you working off a list?? I take it that it must have just been a search of 'Mark Prindle' that revealed 146 articles. I did the same search but not all of the articles that came back had the review on them but made different refrences to 'Mark Prindle'. I can work off the search but i just need to confirm that this is what you want me to work off.
The Mark Prindle review is located within the actual Infobox, listed with other reviews, so it should be easy to locate with a bot. I am working off a search using the term "Mark Prindle" and "wikipedia" and the Infobox template variables within Google.

O.K, then. Ill be working off the wikisearch list, 145 articles that contained the words 'Mark Prindle'. And then the bot searches the article for a review from Mark Prindle, and if there is one present completly gets rid of it. It took me a while to work out the regular expressions i needed to use, because each review has a link to his website, and each link is different. O.K. Trial approved and completed, just did a trial, went through 23 articles and 15 articles had the rating on them and the rating was removed. There are 122 more articles to go thorugh, this should be done in the next day or two. There were a total of 145 articles but not all of them are going to have the Mark Prindle review. The list can be seen at User:Swimmingbot-awb/list of Mark Prindle articles. If there are articles that you think should be there, or you have a different list than that, let me know ASAP and i'll update it. Apparently, {{citation style}} has other redirects leading to it. For each citation style template usage (including usage of the redirects), can you have a bot determine when each template was place on an article and have the bot fill in the date=parameter with the month and year style recognized by cleanup by month? Replacement of "All Music Guide" By "Allmusic"

As the All Music Guide has been rebranded to Allmusic (and its article moved accordingly, see discussion here), we need to reflect this in the articles by replacing all references to "All Music Guide" by "Allmusic". This has been discussed over at Template talk:Infobox Album#All Music Guide → Allmusic? as most references presumably appears in this Infobox. WP:ALBUM has also been consulted and nobody has expressed any concern. As we are talking about 35.000+ articles we would need a bot to take care of this. There are a few exceptions that must be handled:

  • The replacement does not concern talk pages. This would only confuse contributors.
  • The Allmusic article itself should not be touched as we don't want to mess up the history description.
  • Articles All Music Guide to Jazz and All Music Guide to the Blues must not be touched as they concern books issued with that title.

Greetings to all. At WP:EAR we currently receive various requests, much as you do here, and when they're closed/expired we tag 'em with {{resolved}} or other similar templates. Only when they're tagged and a few days have passed do we then archive them. It's presently a manual process, but we were wondering if a bot exists that would do it. User:ClueBot III can archive on demand. Right now it only detects {{User:ClueBot III/ArchiveNow}}, but I could modify it to work with {{resolved}} if wanted. Okay, I have the function working. I'm calling it gbcite. It turns, for example, [5] into "Booker T. Washington (1902). Up from Slavery: An Autobiography. Doubleday, Page & Co. pp. 330 pages." The trouble is, it has no front-end. How were you thinking it could be used?

One way would be to have a bot go through existing pages and run gbcite on all external links to Google Books. I've incorporated this functionality into Polbot task #8, which will hopefully get approved soon. Check out this diff to see it in action. If you find this useful (or have concerns), please weigh in on whether this task should get the go-ahead.

But you might also want a front end for editors, where you enter in a link and it returns a cite for you, in much the way that this tool does for Google Scholar. I'd love to do that, but I don't have an account on toolserver, and I don't know enough about CGI.pm to get that working just yet. If this is what you wanted, let me know. In the article List of woredas in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region, a number of articles in the alphabetical list (as well as the "Special woredas" listed just below the alphabetical list) do not have the category Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region. Can a bot operator ask their bot to locate those articles listed at List of woredas in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region, and those that do not have Category:Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region, can the bot add that category in each of the articles that didn't have it?

The articles wikilinked in the header sentence should not have categories added.

Bot to automate a request for photo

Hi, I am involved in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket and i need a bot which will go through the Category:Australian Test cricketers and add a request for photo.(Template for the request is reqphoto|sportspeople add {{}}.

What will the bot do? 1) Go to an article in the above mentioned list 2) Search if an image / photo is present on the page. 3) Yes? No further work to be done. No? Put in the above mentioned request on the relevant talk page.


The reason for asking for this bot is : 1) It is a manual process 2) It does not require judgment and hence is ideal for automation.

If this bot works out fine then i can use the same bot for other cricket nations. This will be useful for other sports too...

WikiProject Lepidoptera template

Dear colleagues,

The latest changes to Template:WPBannerMeta, the automated functioning of Template:LepidopteraTalk has been "corrupted", in that it is no longer adequate to use (e.g.) {{Template:LepidopteraTalk|Stub|High}}. The new version requires the specification of "class=" and "importance=". Please could someone create a bot that searches for {{Template:LepidopteraTalk}} and automatically inserts the missing-but-now-required text as and when necessary?

For example, {{Template:LepidopteraTalk|Stub|High}} would need to be replaced with {{Template:LepidopteraTalk|class=Stub|importance=High}}.

High-risk templates

We've had a recent spate of vandals targeting transcluded templates ...perhaps having a bot scour Special:MostLinkedTemplates for heavily-used templates that aren't currently protected would be a good idea, allowing intrepid admins to apply semi- and full-protection as needed. Hope you don't mind, I ran this earlier. I compared Special:MostLinkedTemplates to Category:Protected templates and came up with these that are unprotected and semi-protected. Totally forgot about semi-protection; besides going through histories I can't think of how to detect that. For those that do so you don't have to filter through all the templates; the link above has only templates tht are semi and unprotected. Duplicate image bots needed

I appreciate any attention to this - I've spent some time over the last few months trying to clean up images that are duplicates of either a) other images on en Wikipedia (CSD I1) or b) images on Wikimedia Commons (CSD I8). I've had some help on this with a couple of Multichill's tools - particularly this one which identifies local duplicates, and this one which identifies local duplicates of Commons images. The fact that Multichill could write this tells me that a bot can identify these duplicates. We currently only have MetsBot that processes Commons duplicates, but MetsBot only processes images that are tagged with {{db-i8}}. We need a bot to identify and tag these images so that MetsBot can process them as safe for deletion (if applicable) or needing further human attention (if applicable). I would say that if one image is used, and the other is unused, the unused one should be tagged with {{db-i1}}. If both are used, then one of them should be tagged with {{duplicate}}, that way a human would eventually be along to fix the situation. Kelly hi! 00:25, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

I use hashes to detect the duplicates. I can easily tag all files which here have duplicates at commons (i'll produce that script in a couple of minutes), but every picture has to be manually checked to see if all the information was properly transfered to commons. With Commons duplicates, so long as the images are tagged, MetsBot will check all criteria and categorize any images that need human attention due to licensing, names, usage, etc. For local duplicates, unused images should be tagged with {{db-i1}}, duplicates that are both used should have one (it doesn't matter which, maybe the least-used one) tagged with {{duplicate}}. Painted Lady

Please could someone create a bot that searches for [[Painted Lady]] and replaces it with [[Vanessa cardui|Painted Lady]]? I have just carried out a "disambiguation" exercise to separate Painted Lady (the group of butterflies) from Vanessa cardui ("Painted Lady" the species), and there are lots of pages pointing to Painted Lady that should now point to Vanessa cardui. Automatic time period category sorting.

What I'd like, is a bot which, whenever [[domain:xxx text]] is in [[Category:xxx ntext]], the sort key is set to Otext where:

  • text is arbitrary text (or empty, with the sort key being set to " " in that case)
  • ntext is arbitrary text
  • Otext is calculated as follows:
    • if text is empty, or contained in words within ntext, set Text = " " (sort to top level)
    • otherwise, remove leading prepositions ("by", "of", "in"), and words contained in ntext, and capitalize the first remaining letter.
    • (There may be other rules suggested later, or manual readjustments suggested for some other rules)

To avoid possible accidential sort key errors due to something else starting with 2000 being in Category:2000 AD, we might restrict ntext to be null for years. It's less likely that something would be in a category such as Category:20th Century Fox with the "Century" not capitalized.

The bot should log its output in such a way that it can be reversed if it goes WP:ROUGE, remembering that a sort key of " " is not the same as a sort key of "". Remember, if the bot works at all as I request, it won't change any categories, merely change the sort order of categories.

Some of the categories are populated by templates, so the bot won't effect those. A couple months ago, I changed Template:DeathsInCenturyBC‎ to properly tag the nth Century BC deaths articles.

I've never heard any objections; and I think I mentioned some of my manual changes in Wikipedia:WikiProject Years. Pehaps I should ask again in that project, or in WikiProject Time, pointing to this request? Can you think of any other venues where input should be obtained. Search engine test

There is belief that the List of dog breeds contains dogs that don't exist. Would it be possible for a bot to made that searches for exact matches for each dog breed on Google and then outputs a list of the number of Ghits each dog has (and perhaps even sorted by the number of results?) Just to be clear, I am only going to use this list to do further research into the lesser-known breeds existence, not remove every dog with less than a certain number of hits. Greetings. I would like to know which domains are most common in external links in Wikipedia. Ideally, it would be in the form:

  • amazon.com : 132,445 links
  • whitehouse.gov : 33,993 links
  • imdb.com : 107,733 links

etc. It would only need to have, say, the top 40 or 50 domains. (I would prefer if it lumped subdomains together, such as query.nytimes.com and select.nytimes.com both being counted as nytimes.com.) Adding paramater to {{U.S. Roads WikiProject}} for Utah state routes

I am looking for a bot to search User:Admrboltz/utbotreq and find pages that only have SVG images on them (shields and maps), and then to edit the Talk page of the article, and add the following parameter to the {{U.S. Roads WikiProject}} template, "photo=yes". If there are non SVG images on the page, then just to skip the page (because this means there are JPG or other images that indicate real pictures of the route, hopefully). If possible, it would be nice if my original list could be noted when an article has to be tagged (say add a check mark next to the route name). Automated anniversaries for Portals

Greetings from the Anarchism task force. We have a portal at Portal:Anarchism that has an anniversaries section for listing important events in the history of anarchism for each day of the year. However, it is difficult to have to manually trawl Google for '"July 11" anarchism' etc to find info on each day. I was wondering if it would be possible to have a bot search all articles and subcategories of Category:Anarchism for full date links (e.g. July 11, 2008), and then create a log of all articles which link to a given day of the year. So I ask the bot to search for "September 13" and it would give me a list of anarchism-related articles that had that linked. Granted, the signal to noise ratio would be rather low, but still better than thousands of irrelevant Google results. Is this doable? Incidentally, how are our existing day of the year articles compiled? Any assistance appreciated, Skomorokh 13:29, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Yes, it's certainly possible for a bot to find full datelinks and make a list based on that. There are a couple of complications though.

  1. The category system isn't really as hierarchical as it looks. For instance, Category:Anarchism->Category:History of anarchism->Category:Anarchist theory->Category:Alternative currencies->Category:Private currencies->Category:Digital gold currencies->Category:Digital currency exchangers->London Gold Exchange. Not too anarchistic, that transnational finance corporation. Category:Anarchism also drills down to Category:Science fiction fanzines, Category:Proprietary wiki software, and who knows what else. Would it make more sense to use List of basic anarchism topics?
  2. You're right about the signal-to-noise ratio. What would you want the output to look like? One possibility would be:

Well, I have it done, sort of. It's at User:Quadell/Anarchist dates. The only problem is, it was harder than I expected to separate out the "date" (non-year) portion from the year. (Dates are written in different formats.) That's why it's all on one page. It may be possible to separate this list into months/days, but I'm going on vacation and it'll have to wait. With all due respect, I would recommend on expanding Wikipedia:WikiProject BattleTech and {{WikiProject BattleTech}}. First off, the project in question, as of this post, is one hour old. You are the only member, and the project is not organized or defined. A project needs to have an interest of more than one person to justify tagging articles with a project tag. Also, the template or "project tag" does not have any function excluding advertising the project. There are no categories or rating ability. If I can give you some advice, I would work on organizing the project better, maybe looking at some other projects to see what works and ho to organize and create a useful Project tag. Also, I am not sure how many articles are within the scope of the project, but it is best to tag articles by hand, rather than automatically tagging articles. When I restarted WP:PACKERS, I tagged over a thousand pages by hand and I rated said articles. This allows you to define the scope of your project accurately. As per consensus agreed upon by the Rugby league WikiProject, the template {{Infobox rugby league biography}} would be changed to the sandboxed version here. The newer template (sandboxed version) while different, makes it easier for users to change information than the current version. The consensus can be seen on the WikiProject talk page.

However, the format of template is our worry but our problem is that the current version is used on approx 1500 articles and manually changing each article would be tedious and long. This is why we ask for a bot to do this, of all the instructions are explained below.

Changes

This may be hard for a programmer, but I'm sure it can be done.

For every instance of the syntax of the {{Infobox rugby league biography}} on MainSpace articles, the following should be done:



The parameter years, needs to be seperated at each use of <br/> or <br> and then seperated by each use of a dash and placed in the coresponding parameters year1 ... so on. For example:

Old parameter years = 1914<br/>1915-1918<br/>1918-1920<br>1921
Would become: year1 = 1914, year2 = 1915-1918, year3 = 1918-1920, year4 = 1921 (the template allows up to ten years)

THEN

Would become: year1start = 1914, year2start = 1915, year2end = 1918, year3start = 1918, year3end = 1920, year4start = 1921

OK, so from the first line it would get to the third line. It needs to be seperated first at each use of
or
then by each use of a dash (remembering dashes come in many forms)

The parameters transferred are:

years into year(counter)start and year(counter)end

The counter should change every use of
or
into an integer (1, 2, 3 ...)

Then the first year/word would become the start parameter, and the second term the end paramter

So "1914" would have no end parameter

"1914-1915" would have both a start and end parameter

"19??-present" use of strings in both start and end parameter

"1914-1915, 1917-1918" Uses two dashes, which should take the first date (1914) and the last date (1918) as start and finish.



THE SAME EXAMPLES ABOVE NEED TO BE DONE AS WELL FOR THE FOLLOWING PARAMETERS:

  • repyears into year(counter)start and year(counter)end WHERE the counter is a capital Letter (A, B, C ...) not a number
  • coachyears into coachyear(counter)start and coachyear(counter)end where the counter is a Number
  • repcoachyears into coachyear(counter)start and coach(*counter*)end where the counter is a capital Letter (A, B, C ...) not a number
  • refereeyears into refereeyear(counter)start and refereeyear(counter)end where the counter is a number




The parameter clubs needs to be seperated at each use of <br/> or <br> and placed in the coresponding parameters club1, club2... so on. For example:

  • clubs into club(counter) where counter is a number (starts at 1) which is a new one at the seperation of each <br> or <br/>
  • repteam into team(counter) where the counter is a LETTER (starts at A) and seperated at each <br> or <br/>
  • coachclubs into coachteam(counter) where the counter is a number (starts at 1) and seperated at each <br> or <br/>
  • refereecomps into refereecomp(counter) where the counter is a number (starts at 1) and seperated at each <br> or <br/>
  • refereecaps into refereeappearances(counter) where the counter is a number (starts at 1) and seperated at each <br> or <br/>




The parameter caps(points) will be more tedious. It needs to be seperated both at each use of <br/> or <br> AND the brackets. These will be placed in the parameters appearances1 ... so on AND points1 ... so on. For example:

Old parameter caps(points) = 12 (32)<br/>14 (324)<br>281 (1010)
Would become: appearances1 = 12, points1 = 32, appearances2 = 14, points2 = 324, appearances3 = 281, points3 = 1010 (template allows ten times)
  1. So each would be seperated by either a <br> or <br/>
  2. You would then get multiple values in the form of "x (y)" or just "x" or just "(y)"
  3. So x (y) would be seperated into x and y.
  4. The x will go into the parameter appearances(counter) where the counter starts at one and goes up by 1 for each value (seperated by the br)
  5. The y will go into the points(counter) same as above.


This would have to be the same for:

  • repcaps(points) into appearances(counter) and points(counter) where the counters ARE LETTERS (starting at A) and seperated like above.




The Birth and Death date, may have some information for others but no information or limited information for others:

  • The old parameter dateofbirth and dateofdeath respectively.

Now, there will be different formats for both of these old parameters. Some will be in {{birth date and age}}, others in other templates. Some will be just written out in date form. Others might just have a year. But they somehow have to be pushed into three seperated parameters each: dayofbirth, monthofbirth, yearofbirth and dayofdeath, monthofdeath, yearofdeath.




Some other small tasks:

  • The pcupdate and repupdate should get the most recent date (one may be 12 may 08, the other 12 june 08 (in which case it would be 12 June 2008) and then seperate it into a year ("2008" in this instance) to the year parameter and the date "12 June" into the date parameter, BUT NOT LINKED.

To help users fill in some new parameters not introduced, can the bot put all parameters shown on the documentation of User:MDM/Sandbox3/doc. Even if they are empty, just place them, and in order shown there.



They may be a minority of articles that don't follow the old MOS for this infobox, the bot should create a list (somewhere) of articles that should be manually changed. I don't know much about bots, but I think this may be better done in sections/speratetly. Note that the template is currently in the old format, and we won't change it until any bot's are used.
