That's probably the right ballpark count, given Special:LintErrors reports 380 total errors of this type from all causes. Doing that search limited to "User talk:" namespace gave me 295 hits, so I agree that a bot to avoid new-messages noise is a better idea. DMacks (talk) 06:16, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Database reports/Polluted categories is created weekly with categories that are mainspace categories, but have user pages in them as well. In general, what I would like to be able to do is to select all 1000 categories from that page, go into each of those categories and select all user pages. (Once I get that, changing [[Category: to [[:Category: is easy<. I appreciate that this won't clean all of the categories (some have categories created by templates), but it would certainly give me a good start. Any idea how I can use the Polluted Categories page to generate that list for AWB?Naraht (talk) 11:18, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

One occasionally finds a manually added version of {{fact}} in articles; I just replaced one with the template. Is there a chance that someone could run through a database dump and replace this precise code with {{fact}}, either with or without a |date=October 2017 parameter? I'm having trouble finding them with an ordinary search, because "intitle:^{[citation needed]}" finds lots of pages with {{citation needed}} and ignores the brackets and <> characters that are essential to this manual representation of the template. This particular instance was added a year and a half ago, so I doubt that the ^{[citation needed]} is the subject of any ongoing maintenance project. Nyttend (talk) 00:47, 3 October 2017 (UTC)

While manually tagging the categories listed in this discussion I made a nasty mistake, as I forgot to put "BC" in the tags.

For example, the first one, on the category page Category:1040s_BC_births the tag says to merge to Category:11th-century births while it should be Category:11th-century BC births. So in the script, "target=11th-century births" should be changed to "target=11th-century BC births".

Generalized across all listed categories "century" should be replaced by "century BC". Is it relatively easy to correct this for all listed categories with AWB and if so, would someone be willing to do this? Marcocapelle (talk) 07:59, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

About 600 articles (mostly schools, some hospitals) claim that an entity is fully accredited by its relevant regulatory agency. I'm proposing "fully" be semi-automatically removed from these phrases except when part of a quotation or when doing so changes the meaning of the sentence. Per WP:JR, several of us have been removing commas before Jr. and Sr., moving articles where appropriate, etc. We're at the point where more than 90% of articles in any top 500 search are fixed, but that still leaves hundreds, or perhaps thousands, in the long tail of less popular articles to work on. There are a lot of subtleties here, like whether or not to have a comma after Jr. or Sr., and a few articles to not mess with for various reasons. I don't have a clear idea how much of this AWB can take on, but would love to engage in a dialog with someone who wants to help. Dicklyon (talk) 05:34, 13 October 2017 (UTC)

Please feel free to move my comment elsewhere if there is an existing discussion on this topic. Tricky! I looked at just one example, Neil Brown Jr., who has several links via Neil Brown, Jr.. Even his own website is inconsistent, with a comma in the archived version but the current version being a redirect to IMDB which has no comma. First we need a definitive note of how to refer to each subject, and I would say that step one is to move every article to the right title. That's an improvement in its own right and should make it easier to fix references to one person at a time with AWB or similar. Where appropriate, redirects such as Neil Brown, Jr. could be classified as {{R from misspelling}} so they show up in Wikipedia:Database reports/Linked misspellings. The comma after Jr. is more of a problem. (I call this a "wikicomma" because it is a peculiarity of MOS rarely seen outside Wikipedia.) As you've already worked out, Doe, Jr., died. needs the wikicomma removed but Doe, Jr., like Doe, Sr., died. doesn't. Any rules would be complex and have exceptions, so that's probably one for the human eye. Certes (talk) 11:14, 13 October 2017 (UTC)

Right, there's a lot that can be done automatically, like the moves, but also a lot of exceptions, or cases that need to be looked at. Does AWB provide an easy way to get a human into the loop doing yes/no on proposed edits? Something like that is what we need, I think. Not sure what you mean by wikicomma; what about this in our MOS is unusual compared to outside grammar and style guides and practice? Or are you just noting that it's common to drop the matching comma after when there's a comma before? That common error is one of the main motivations for the change of recommended style in guides over the last four decades. But yes, in your examples, some commas go and some stay: Doe Jr. died. but Doe Jr., like Doe Sr., died. If we just take out commas before, we'll change some errors to correct, and some correct to errors: e.g. Doe, Jr. died. is corrected to Doe Jr. died. and Doe, Jr., like Doe, Sr., died. is good as Doe Jr., like Doe Sr., died., but Doe, Jr., died. is made wrong as Doe Jr., died. Most likely, we'd do more good than harm (because, as you note, the balancing commas are already pretty commonly missing), but there are a lot of all these, and a way to get eyes on them without as much manual work is what I'm looking for. There are also those cases where the comma after is needed, and missing, independent of the comma before. It's like the editor felt that the comma before was enough, in things like Doe, Jr. like Doe, Sr. died. Here's one I fixed recently. Dicklyon (talk) 00:01, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

I went through and removed the commas from pages that linked through the Neil Brown, Jr. redirect, and in no case (unless I've missed one) did I need to add or remove a comma after. So I'd just automate that, and maybe collect a list for humans to check. If AWB can run a fancy parser, like in a grammar checker, it might be able to filter down to suspicious cases. AWB (and JWB, which I use instead) can parse using regular expressions. They do present the proposed edits to a human for checking. (Fully automated editing would need a bot instead.) You'll probably need an admin to do the page moves, because many of the new titles will be occupied by redirects with multiple versions.

I agree with all your examples above, including the matching parenthetical commas around "like Doe Sr.". By "wikicomma" I meant the second comma in Doe, Jr., died in the unusual case where we do want to write "Doe, Jr." with a comma. MOS requires it, so it will stay. Right, but MOS requires it because all grammar guides require it. As we worked down into the depths of page rankings, we've found fewer and fewer that have redirects, so most of the moves have become very easy; perhaps 90%. When we started, with more popular articles, it was more like 50%, there being lots more redirects there. Anyway, doesn't need an admin, just someone with pagemover bit. Thanks for discussing. JWB should work on any modern browser and operating system. I use it in Firefox on Ubuntu. I've heard that AWB works well in wine if that helps. You'd need to register before using AWB or JWB. Certes (talk) 09:40, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

I applied for and received approval already. I have a list of about 300 titles I can send you (email, or put on a user subpage, or whatever). But I'd like to see if JWB can help in digging up more articles that need fixes; there will be many thousands that could use edits, in addition to the hundreds or perhaps thousands of moves. As I said, this is pretty much all in the long tail. It's relatively rare to encounter any of these excess commas in articles on anyone you're likely to have heard of. Here's my current list: User:Dicklyon/JrSrMoves, culled from the first 10,000 hits on searching for articles that contain both "Jr" and "Sr". I just ran a database scan on the 2 Oct 2017 dump and found 2002 pages ending in , [JS]r\.?$. I've uploaded the list to User:Tom.Reding/JrSrMoves, borrowing the whitelist from User:Dicklyon/JrSrMoves. I'm running another scan now for pages with , [JS]r[$\b\s\.] anywhere in their name and will update my page accordingly and put the new pages in a separate section.

I was making a similar list in User:Certes/JrSr/titles at the same time. Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/User_manual#Start says AWB offers page moving for admins only. I've not seen that feature in JWB, but then I'm not an admin. I agree that, with thousands rather than hundreds of pages to move, we should make a bot request. Is there an admin AWB user willing to help here? I see that Certes has moved dozens, and Tom.Reding has edited hundreds, but for this to scale we probably need an automated move capability, or at least a semi-automated easy way to use AWB to move. If that's not going to happen, I'll try to use Tom's contribs as a guide for where corresponding moves are needed to catch up with his edits, and do a few dozen per day manually. I semiautomatically went through each page that remains on the non-whitelist, checking for templates and/or categories characteristic of non-fictional people, and pages with only a single name before the , [JS]r.. Bulk edit

Thanks for organising the bulk move. It's a lot easier now that we can also fix other Jrs on the page without pausing to move them manually. I've edited the pages which turned into redirects and the ones I moved myself. It's still a massive task with a lot of intricate checks to make. Each name can have dozens of pages with multiple links, so fixing 10 names a day as a background task seems reasonable - 6 months' work. Particular gotchas:

• John Q. Doe, Jr. redirects to John Doe Jr. but John Q. Doe Jr. without the comma doesn't; similarly with missing accents etc.
• File:John Doe, Jr. is an image, and removing the comma would make it vanish
• Links are piped as [[John Doe, Jr.|Doe]] and someone may get upset about trivial edits with no effect on the page's appearance

I've started working on the name-list again; 1-2 hundred per day. If you find any exceptions please update the whitelist (I've hard-coded to avoid them).

I'm not sure about adding this issue to the typos list. It will be difficult to isolate all proper names for institutes, libraries, buildings, etc. that require the comma. I don't see this being easily & robustly added to the typos list. Well, as far as the scope of this task request, all the page titles are fixed (unless a new ,-page was created since the last database scan). However, there're still ~138k pages containing , [JS]r[\s\.,'] in their body. I've stumbled across a few instances of failed non-breaking spaces in articles, and searching suggests that there are quite a lot more. The most common errors seem to be:

• & nbsp; (i.e. a space between the ampersand and nbsp)
• &nbsp: (i.e. a colon rather than a semicolon)

There are a few more, but a quick look suggests they are not as numerous and so the above two will be good for starters, Almost all of these are going to be errors that should be corrected to  but there may be some exceptions. It is possibly worth adding this an ongoing general fix.

Probably most of those instances where the non-breaking space separates numbers from a unit this should be replaced with a {{convert}} template, but that is a separate job and not one that I think AWB is suitable for. Thryduulf (talk) 01:30, 9 November 2017 (UTC)

Petscan says there are 495 relevant pages. All are direct members of Category:Members of the Parliament of England (pre-1707). 402 are direct members of Category:14th-century English people but 93 are in subcategories (e.g. Geoffrey Chaucer qualifies via Category:14th-century English writers). Surprisingly, there is no overlap between the 495 and Category:14th-century English MPs‎. Fixing the 402 as requested should be easy. We should probably move the remaining 93 out of Category:Members of the Parliament of England (pre-1707) and into Category:14th-century English MPs‎ but leave them in the subcategories such as Category:14th-century English writers. A potential problem: do all 14th-century English people who were Members of the Parliament of England qualify as 14th-century English MPs‎? Also you get cases like David Flitwick (Beds MP 1295) who is (correctly?) in Category:English people of the Wars of Scottish Independence which is (mistakenly?) a subcat of Category:14th-century English people. He died in 1296, so it's a bit of a minefield. But perhaps I'm being a pedant and we would be fixing far more errors than we introduce, so I'm happy to go along on that basis if everyone else is. However, the text of page should not have been changed from lunar impact crater to lunar crater. I've had a quick look at later centuries. The good news is that once we reach 1500 there are fewer pages. But there are more subcats such as Category:English MPs 1504‎. Neither approach is totally automated. JWB puts up the page with the category changes and read the article. About 80% of the time I accept the standard change and hit Save; about 10% are about people who were only MPs in an adjacent century so I Skip; the rest are more complicated or simply lived in a different century. Certainly filing into centuries is easier, and makes sense if that's where most of the pages are already. Certes (talk) 20:20, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

I've completed an initial run for 13th to 17th centuries. Things I've not done:

• 1701–07, because there's no category Category:18th-century English MPs (note: several 17th-century MPs also served in the 18th but aren't categorised as such)
• checking for redundant parents, e.g. articles in both Category:English MPs 1504‎ and Category:16th-century English MPs
• subcategories,any overlap between Category:13th-century English architects‎ and Category:Members of the Parliament of England (pre-1707)

I've also addressed the subcategories. Category:Members of the Parliament of England (pre-1707) is now down to 138 pages, which someone should be able to diffuse manually.

In a few cases, especially in the 17th century, what I've done isn't ideal for two reasons:

1. I've moved articles to Category:17th-century English MPs etc. that are also in its subcategories for specific parliament dates. It's not always clear whether they're in all relevant subcategories, and they'll be easier to check there than if left in the nebulous Category:Members of the Parliament of England (pre-1707).
2. I've moved articles to Category:17th-century English MPs which would also belong in Category:18th-century English MPs if such a thing existed.

There is further checking and diffusion to be done, but I think it's now time to leave things to HotCat or other methods.

Beware of Category:William Shakespeare, which is in Category:17th-century English writers (and 16th). Although the Bard himself undoubtedly belongs in its parent Category:17th-century English people, many of the category's other articles such as Henry Green (politician, died 1399) do not. It appears that 1000 through 9000 have standardized subsections, and they used to have different standardized subsections. I propose that

1. redirects from [[abcd (number)]] to (subsections of) [[a000 (number)]],
2. links of the form [[a000 (number)|abcd]] (or to subsections)

be redirected to the following subsection

• (blank)

  if bcd = 000

• #a001 to a099

  if b = 0

• #ab00 to ab99

  if b > 0

A more complex script might fail to suggest the change if the section name was abcd, but if I'm running the script, I can reject those changes.

At this stage this is a query on practicability.

Is AWB suitable for adding Wikipedia:Short descriptions to articles which lack them, using the short description from the associated Wikidata item, but allowing user override and improvement?

If so, how would it be done? This would be a huge task requiring operator inspection of each of several million short descriptions to ensure that it is appropriate before writing to the article, and in many cases some improvement will be required. In some cases the description will be entirely inappropriate and can simply be skipped altogether, and in a very large number of cases there is no short description available, and can be skipped altogether. Pbsouthwood, certainly doable with AWB via the module, which recognizes C# 3.5 & VB.NET 2.0. You can use the WP API to get the "wikibase_item" (aka Wikidata item), then use the QID to access any related Wikidata data. I haven't had much need to pull specific WD items' info, so I don't know how to quickly query the contents of a specific WD property, etc., (and would love to hear it) but scraping the HTML (also doable via AWB) is always an option, but certainly not the most elegant. Well, chances are that the person coding this wouldn't be main user, due to the large # of pages, and the non-automated nature as you've described it. This almost seems like something that should be incorporated into like Visual Editor or something. I don't have any experience with VE, but I'm just guessing.

If there were a list of pages with "ok-as-is" short WD descriptions, i.e. on a per-project basis, showing project vetting/consensus of the list, that would be a much more straightforward task that could be handled here or at WP:BOTREQ.   ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf)  17:29, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi, can someone with WP:AWB or another automated tool remove Portal:Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and Portal:ISIL from all the pages it is present on? The portals were recently deleted via Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2018 March 2#Portal:Islamic_State_of_Iraq_and_the_Levant. Please can an admin who uses AWB assist with moving articles about motorcyclists to consistent titles? See WT:WikiProject Motorcycling#Pages to move. AWB is needed only for the list of 110 pages in the collapsed box. All of them follow a standard pattern, and where a page exists at the new title it's a redirect to the current title. Is replacing characters in a page name repeatedly possible with AWB? As far as I know you can only manually move pages for the current page that shows in the feed, rather than doing the same replacement automatically for all pages in the feed. SkyGazer 512, Certes is right for asking an admin to do semi-automated page moves in AWB, since non-admins don't have that utility enabled. Since I'm not an admin, I can't speak to AWB's page-move interface's functionality, but from the few times I've seen that requested, it didn't seem to be a problem. I also think there is a non-AWB admin tool which makes mass page-moves quite painless, but I could be wrong. Before I pull the trigger on this one - all of the existing articles have a consistent naming convention. Are you saying that said convention is outside of the norms for similar naming conventions? @Primefac: The current position is that we have 110 articles called "Joe Name (motorcycle racer)", 70 "Joe Name (motorcyclist)", and a ragbag of others that I can fix manually. The two main qualifiers are doing the same job. Editors adding links are understandably confused, and often put up a redlink when there's a perfectly good article. My interpretation (as an involved editor) of WT:WikiProject Motorcycling#Article title qualifiers is that there's a consensus to standardise on something and a weak preference for (motorcyclist). If you feel that this would benefit from further discussion, please hold off and suggest a better forum. Certes (talk) 19:45, 9 May 2018 (UTC)

I recently closed an RfD, the result of which was to deprecate {{tooltip}}. Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Accessibility#Text, tooltips should be avoided except for the use of abbreviations. In short, every current use of tooltip (many are in templates) should be either:

1. Converted to {{abbr}} if it is an abbreviation; OR
2. Removed, whether by restructuring or converting to a footnote or whatever

While I imagine AWB will be most helpful, many cases will not a quick or simple fix, and this will require a fair bit of human effort. Still, I wanted to advertise this here in case anyone was interested. ~ Amory (u • t • c) 17:54, 19 May 2018 (UTC)

Amorymeltzer, it would have been useful to save #R'ing {{Tooltip}} until after people had a go at this. Finding transclusions of {{Tooltip}}, when it's an #R to {{Abbr}}, is now more difficult.

Galobtter has done a bunch already, so there are some good examples in his contributions.

• Proper MOS use: Replacing tooltip with abbr
• Improper use: Restructuring to avoid improper usage
• Another option, should one wish to retain some information, would be to replace {{tooltip|1|2}} with 1<ref>2</ref> or 1{{efn|2}} and adding {{notelist}}. I would imagine this to be uncommon.

As noted by Galobtter, many of the sports templates are likely to be fairly straightforward, with obvious abbreviations like pos. ~ Amory (u • t • c) 20:37, 19 May 2018 (UTC)

Noting that Tooltip has been a redirect for 8 years. Yeah, I'd say that the most easy to do semi-automatically would be to go through uses of {{tooltip|Pos|Position}} and all other sports table headings like that and replace with Abbr as being clearly fine to use. User has been mass-adding flag icons to infoboxes, which is directly contrary to WP:INFOBOXFLAG. Was going to do it myself but it would probably be much easier for an AWB user to just zap them as they used the same edit summary “added two flags” each time. The trick is to move the page & subpages, then move the page alone back, then move the page & subpages over again and keep repeating until all are moved. Because the process won't overwrite subpages that already exist you don't risk a redirect mess and the process goes to the next 100 subpages in the queue. Timrollpickering 15:04, 26 May 2018 (UTC)
