Video game genre-related question[edit]

Hello. Sorry for this super random message. I have a quick question about a video game (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Wrath of the Darkhul King). The coverage on the game goes back and forth between calling it a platformer and an action game. I would personally call it a platformer. I find it difficult to call something an action game if a majority of the actual combat could be skipped. That is just my opinion though of course.

I was not sure how to best approach this situation as I have little experience working with video game articles. I went with calling it an action platformer after I saw that redirect, I put in a note about how the coverage on the game's genre varied. Do you think that is the course of action? If not, what would you suggestion? This is likely just a case of me way over-thinking it.

Sorry again for this completely out of left field question, but I just saw your FAC for Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment , which inspired me to reach out and ask since that is also a platformer. It has been something in the back of my mind since I put it in the article. Admittedly, I should have either reached out to editors experienced with video game articles or posted on WikiProject Video games's talk page before nominating the article for a FAC. I hope you are having a good day/night so far. Aoba47 (talk) 00:38, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Aoba47 Hi there. Since it seems that most of the sources either call it a platform game or an action game, I think it would be totally fine to call it an "action-platformer" as a hybrid genre. Some other games use this type of hybrid approach like Dead Cells being called a roguelike-metroidvania. And I would keep the note on the varied genre so that readers can understand the varied labels given to this game. I think you approached the genre just fine and totally didn't overthink it! The Night Watch (talk) 01:44, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the response. I appreciate the confirmation that I made the right call. I wanted to double-check as this is outside of my usual area of expertise. Aoba47 (talk) 03:12, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

John Cusack[edit]

I added a direct quoted tweet (X message) from John Cusack that illustrates his level of anti-Jew discourse. Why is that "disruptive". Mr. Cusack has been calling Jews "ghouls" on X and has even been endorsing "blood libel" messages accusing Israeli people of stealing skin and organs from prisoners. He is widely being called out as antisemitic on social media by hundreds if not thousands of people. Why is it disruptive to include that controversy on the page, while his previous antisemitic tweet is included, as is his commentary on the Hamas-Israeli war? John Cusack has over a million followers on X and is highly influential. Why are his anti-Jew posts considered irrelevant? Psycholing (talk) 09:18, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Psycholing I did not revert you, that was someone else. I reverted the part saying that he was an antisemite by occupation, which violates NPOV The Night Watch (talk) 19:53, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there @Bwscharf. You may wish to read the page here before submitting your biography, and do know that an article must be of good quality with reliable and independent sources and must discuss the subject (in this case you) in a fair and neutral manner. The Night Watch (talk) 19:35, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, but I had to remove the material that you just added to this page since it didn't discuss yourself in a fair and neutral manner. Do understand that creating a biography on yourself is strongly discouraged and needs reliable sources (such as reputable newspapers or books from authors of known quality) before it can be accepted onto Wikipedia. Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Prodraxis submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I would like to nominate The Night Watch for Editor of the Week for their excellent mainspace and maintenance work. The Night Watch is a member of WikiProject Video Games, and some of their best works include Kingdom Two Crowns, Five Nights at Freddy's (video game) and The Longing. They have also contributed significantly to five other GA's and 4 DYK's in addition to the three FA's mentioned above. Not only this, but The Night Watch also spends a good amount of their time working at New Pages Patrol, closing Requested Moves and cleaning up vandalism. They are a remarkable editor in many ways and I wouldn't be surprised if they become an administrator sometime.

Question from Biggest Roo (01:43, 30 January 2024)[edit]

I want to create an article about my religion Roo. I am the founder and creator of it and have suffered socially ever since its creation in 2023. Many people have been misrepresenting me, and I would like to have at least one wikipedia article that is written and edited by me and only me on the subject of my religion. --Biggest Roo (talk) 01:43, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Biggest Roo. We can only have an article on your religion if there have been good, independent sources reporting on it such as reputable newspapers or books. Simply because your religion exists and that you founded it does not mean that it qualifies for an article. Without good sources, your article would most likely be deleted and I would advise against creating material on your religion unless other people have reported on it. The Night Watch (talk) 01:52, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you don't want me here, I'm out I spoke in honest good faith. Biggest Roo (talk) 01:54, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Of course I want you here @Biggest Roo! The hard part is that Wikipedia can't include content unless it has been published in the aforementioned good sources. Since we are an encyclopedia, we try to keep our created material up to a verifiable standard which means that some things cannot be reported on unless they are adequately covered. Perhaps instead of trying to create an article about your religion, you could find an already existing article to add information on. What subjects interest you? The Night Watch (talk) 02:03, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're just asking me to host my religion on my own site. Please stop talking down to me. Biggest Roo (talk) 02:05, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are free to contribute where you see fit, bit If you intend to use Wikipedia as a web host, that is forbidden. The Night Watch (talk) 02:07, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Its a free hosting site for articles. You shouldn't be a mentor. Biggest Roo (talk) 02:08, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia first and foremost that happens to contain articles on subjects that editors have determined to be notable; it is not a free web hosting service. There are other hosting services online should you wish to represent your religion, but unless there are reliable sources reporting on it, then Wikipedia cannot have an article on the subject The Night Watch (talk) 02:13, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Resilient Barnstar
This RfA process is broken. Each individual oppose/support is reasonable on their own, but the collective pile-on effect is not ideal and scales this proportion, including your need to expand on your apology. The vast majority of editors recognize your qualification for adminship. The opposers' rationales are thoughtful, and I am confident you will take their feedback. Sadly it is also necessary to say this, but I would avoid engaging with this post or any other comments about the topic, but wanted you to at least acknowledge the stress you're going through, and encourage you to stay resilient and stick with this. That sucked, but now it's over[edit]

The best way to deal with opposes (in the wake of what to me seemed like a puzzling pile-on over a single fairly minor incident) is to take a bit of time away to get yourself back into a better state of mind, and then treat them as feedback, which is always a gift even when it smarts. WikiCup 2024 February newsletter[edit]

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. story · music · places

Thank you for improving quality articles in February, even as an admin ;) - and for passing the baton. - The image, taken on a cemetery last year after the funeral of a distant but dear family member, commemorates today, with thanks for their achievements, four subjects mentioned on the Main page and Vami_IV, a friend here. Listen to music by Tchaikovsky (an article where one of the four is pictured), sung by today's subject (whose performance on stage I enjoyed two days ago). -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:56, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Shadows over Loathing Music Source Reliablility[edit]

Hi, I noticed you removed the Music section from the Shadows over Loathing article. I understand that Reddit may not be reliable, but It's not like it's some redditor saying "oh earth flat lol", it's stating how they learned that there is dynamic music. I would really like to keep the section, but I understand one guy on Reddit talking about this isn't reliable (although why would someone lie about something like that?) anyways, if we could find video footage of the game itself of dynamic music in place, then would that suffice as a source? MarinaTheRanger (talk) 14:03, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there @MarinaTheRanger. There is wide consensus among users that Reddit should not be used as a source at all since it is a user-generated website with no oversight. Reliable sources are typically newspapers, websites with a known history of editorial standards, or peer-reviewed research papers. If the game itself talks about its own dynamic music, then you could use it as a limited source about itself and use other sources to support a music section if those sources do talk about the dynamic music as well. However, if the game has dynamic music but it itself does not talk about this music, then any sourcing to the game saying it has dynamic music would constitute original research. The Night Watch (talk) 14:14, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, @The Night Watch. There doesn't seem to be any sources about its dynamic music I could find (besides the Reddit page and an rpgfan.com article that barely mentions it in passing), so we'll have to put the dynamic music part on hold. I myself have played the game myself 4 times over (twice with the Jazz Agent and once as the Pig Skinner and Cheese Wizard) and have noticed the dynamic music, so I thought it might be useful to put in as another feature the game has, but without a reliable source it's nothing. Thanks again, and have a great day. MarinaTheRanger (talk) 15:04, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2024 March newsletter[edit]

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Question from Nigel R Jones (17:25, 12 March 2024)[edit]

Hello,

I'm interested about creating content about a relative of mine who was a Landscape Artist from 19th century. There is currently nothing about him on Wikipedia, nor is there an official biography, nor catalogue raisonne.

I appreciate it will need some editing and refinement prior to publishing, but I'm keen to get started.

Do I have to complete some editing workshops before I create new content ?

Kind Regards

Nigel --Nigel R Jones (talk) 17:25, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there @Nigel R Jones, sorry for the late reply. Are there any reliable sources like newspapers or books by reputable authors that report on your distant relative? To be considered for inclusion in Wikipedia, articles need to have significant coverage of their subject, which is more than just passing mentions. You don't need to complete an editing workshop before you can add content, you can just start out with the article wizard to help guide you through the creation process. But do make sure that your relative is covered by these reliable sources before creating a draft article. The Night Watch (talk) 01:16, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I[edit]

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
  • Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
  • Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
  • Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
  • Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
  • Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
  • Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
  • Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
  • Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
  • Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
  • Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
  • Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
  • Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:

Note for stalkers[edit]

I'm going to have to scale down my participation in Wikipedia for a while after getting my content affairs in order. I have some health issues that I'm working through anyway and that's limiting my energy. But the bigger problem that I need some time away to help address the concerns I have involving my approach and communication which somewhat involves extended troubles with my personal life and mental stability. That whole discussion, along with some other events going on in my life at the time, helped bring into perspective a problem that I couldn't quite recognize on my own: I'm agitating myself too much with Wikipedia and need some help mitigating the burnout. I might edit or lurk every now and then but I won't be able to seriously contribute for at least a couple of months. I love this place but I need to get myself into a better state of mind and ensure that I exhibit calmer and better judgment. So I need some time. My email is still open if you wish to contact me. I'll try my best to respond. The Night Watch (talk) 14:21, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

I like to see Appalachian Spring on the Main page today (not by me, just interested and reviewed), and I also made it my story. How do you like the statue (look up places)? - I was undecided so show three versions ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:21, 6 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2024 April newsletter[edit]

We are approaching the end of the 2024 WikiCup's second round, with a little over two weeks remaining. Currently, contestants must score at least 105 points to progress to the third round.

Our current top scorers are as follows:

Competitors may submit work for the second round until the end of 28 April, and the third round starts 1 May. Remember that only competitors with the top 32 scores will make it through to the third round. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs. As a reminder, competitors are strictly prohibited from gaming Wikipedia policies or processes to receive more points.

If you would like to learn more about rules and scoring for the 2024 WikiCup, please read Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Further questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
