Question from Thisasia on User:Thisasia (18:02, 21 February 2024)[edit]

Hello sir, please I'd like to know if one can add a custom html/css Notice Templates on Wikipedia learn-more page? --Thisasia (talk) 18:02, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thisasia I don't understand. What do you mean my 'custom notice template', and what do you mean by the learn-more page? (Links would be nice) Sungodtemple (talk • contribs) 22:55, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Oiduts2024 (13:31, 23 February 2024)[edit]

Hi Sungodtemple,

Nice to e-meet you.

I was curious on how to add or change images on a biographical page for example and whether copyrights can be mentioned alongside these?

Looking forward reading you,

Kind regards --Oiduts2024 (talk) 13:31, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oiduts2024, if the image you are trying to add or change has already been uploaded, then you can link it (see Help:Pictures).
If the image has not been uploaded, see the File upload wizard. Copyrights, if any, generally should not be mentioned in the article but instead on the file description page. Sungodtemple (talk • contribs) 13:50, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Ibavis on User:Ibavis (16:31, 25 February 2024)[edit]

hello how do i lock my user page --Ibavis (talk) 16:31, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ibavis if by 'lock' you mean page protection, there is usually not a good reason to protect a user page. See WP:UPROT for the policy on protecting user pages. In general, pages are protected if they have a high level of vandalism. Sungodtemple (talk • contribs) 16:37, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How to Rename My Username Ibavis (talk) 04:31, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ibavis see WP:RENAME if you want to rename yourself. Given that your account is very new, you may also want to simply create a new account with that username. Sungodtemple (talk • contribs) 12:53, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Californiawriter (21:28, 27 February 2024)[edit]

Hello, when can I start writing a new article? --Californiawriter (talk) 21:28, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Californiawriter, to answer your question, you can start writing a new article whenever you want.
However, note that you can't create an article directly in 'mainspace', or where viewers see it. Instead, there is a technical restriction which only allows you to create a new article directly when you are autoconfirmed - that is, your account has existed for four complete days and made ten edits.
Furthermore, creating a new article is one of the most difficult things you could possibly do on Wikipedia, only made even more arduous since you are a new editor. This would be akin to attending a chess competition having just learned what the rules are.
If your mind is set on creating a new article, I highly recommend you spend some time (at least a few days) making edits suggested at your newcomer homepage, then reading the Your First Article page very carefully and creating a draft. Also note that creating articles is generally not the best way you can contribute to Wikipedia.
Lastly, if you are being paid to edit Wikipedia or have a conflict of interest with your planned article subject, then you should read the relevant guideline/policy, which are linked earlier in the sentence. Happy editing! Sungodtemple (talk • contribs) 01:52, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Sooedit (11:38, 6 March 2024)[edit]

As I see a Video on YouTube, about moving a page but the Option in Tools for moving a page is not available for me. Can you Explain please?? --Sooedit (talk) 11:38, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sooedit some articles, including YouTube, are move protected, meaning only administrators can move them. It's not like you would want to move it anyways. If you want to test moving a page, try moving a user subpage which is less likely to damage the encyclopedia. Sungodtemple (talk • contribs) 13:47, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Got it, But the Move option is not available even for draft or User page Sooedit (talk) 19:10, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from TheMadScienFish23 (14:18, 9 March 2024)[edit]

Which tools should I use to determine if an edit is vandalism so I can revert only if it was determined to be vandalism? --TheMadScien🐠23 (💬) 14:18, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

TheMadScienFish23 vandalism is editing deliberately intended to interfere with the encyclopedia. For example, this revert was likely unjustified since the editor was adding sourced material. Meanwhile this revert was justified since the editor was trying to add promotional content to the article, obstructing the creation of an encyclopedia.
There are no 'tools' (read: AI) that can 100% determine if an edit is vandalism, but you can use a filtered view of Special:RecentChanges, for example using the tag #possible vandalism. Sungodtemple (talk • contribs) 16:52, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I[edit]

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
  • Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
  • Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
  • Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
  • Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
  • Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
  • Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
  • Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
  • Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
  • Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
  • Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
  • Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
  • Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:

Question from Veeleebarr on Fort Collins High School (18:47, 3 April 2024)[edit]

Hello I’m new to Wikipedia editing, however I love research and writing, on specific topics: ie,…historical concerning sites and or persons, art and architecture, musicians; this being noted, my interests are broad. I’m open to learn. I was able to edit and add links, on first try, but certainly could use a mentor? How do I go about asking for such? Would it be based on topic, style, formats? I did find the first addition of the Fort Collins high school newspaper on this pape, however, is the wiki AI bot looking for just the url page from which the newspaper is launched? Veeleestarr --Veeleebarr (talk) 18:47, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Veeleebarr when the bot wants you to add a link, it's referring to an internal link or wikilink. Fort Collins High School doesn't have a section about its newspaper, so you would have to add one. I would not recommend doing so until learning more about content standards.
I am automatically assigned as your mentor and can answer most of your questions as a beginner. If you want a different mentor (maybe one more aligned with your interests) you can ask at the Teahouse. Sungodtemple (talk • contribs) 21:50, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from OneGreatRoyalty (22:07, 3 April 2024)[edit]

Hi! Am I allowed to create a Wikipedia page about a YouTuber? --OneGreatRoyalty (talk) 22:07, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

OneGreatRoyalty you can, but it is one of the hardest tasks you could possibly do as a new user on Wikipedia. It requires a good understanding of many policies and guidelines, such as the confusing notability guideline. I recommend starting with smaller edits, for example those suggested at Special:Homepage.
