Question from Skdnfu (01:24, 20 January 2024)[edit]

Hi! I just did an edit about fictional character Zack Addy. In the article, it Continually referred to the character as Zack so I changed it to Addy to make it more professional. Is this the right move? --Skdnfu (talk) 01:24, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Skdnfu: Hi, looks okay to me. Shellwood (talk) 15:20, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Gary Pavela[edit]

I think there is a credible point of view that should be included in the article about E.O. Wilson. In two relevant locations I added one sentence with a citation. This is my first edit, so please forgive my procedural ignorance. I am a college teacher and writer with a focus on academic freedom. The academic freedom issue is precisely what is missing in this article. TPR editor (talk) 02:04, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@TPR editor: Hi, I'm not familiar about the subject but there source you added seems to be coming from a blog which is a self-published source and can't be used, this is being discussed in your thread at the talk page. Shellwood (talk) 15:20, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for alerting me, Shellwood.
The cited article was written by Michael Shermer, Editor of Skeptic Magazine, and distributed as part of a weekly newsletter published by the magazine.
Still, as a newcomer here, I want to be careful to adhere to all relevant standards--including Wikimedia's longstanding commitment to airing credible alternative points of view.
What follows below is my amended language and citation to the magazine ("Skeptic") where it was published. The author was "Professor of Biology and Alexander Agassiz Professor of Zoology at Harvard University (1973–1990) and he held a chair as Professor of Zoology at the University of Würzburg, Germany (1989–2004)."
Here's my revised, suggested, one-sentence entry at the end of paragraph four:
> Others have argued that Wilson was "naive" in defending Rushton's academic freedom, but that Wilson's own work contains "nothing even remotely supportive of racism." [1] TPR editor (talk) 17:05, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TPR editor: Hi, I saw that your edit was reverted and the explanation for that was in the edit summary (see WP:RS and specially the part about user-generated content). I suggest you take note of what it says and any further discussions about changes to the article should take place on the talk page. I'm afraid I can't help you anymore since I no knowledge about the subject, but I wish you good luck! Shellwood (talk) 22:53, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for helping me. I can't find any explanation for the reversion.
I believe there is an appeal provision for multiple reversions. Can you direct me to the right link? There seem to be a small group of people ideologically determined to discredit E.O. Wilson and to forbid any alternative point of view.

Question from Ingastas (12:43, 4 February 2024)[edit]

Hi Shellwood,

I created an account to create a page for my wife, who's a remarkable person and had a great career and life to date. Can you guide me through how to go about it?

Thanks in advance, Stan --Ingastas (talk) 12:43, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ingastas: Hi, I strongly advise against this due to your obvious conflict of interest, read more about it here: WP:COI. Shellwood (talk) 13:58, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I wasn't aware of it. Thanks for pointing it out. Can I hire someone to create such a page? My wife is turning 50 in a month and I wanted to get this for her as a present, as she really deserves it as a professional who contributed to this world. I'd appreciate any advise to make this happen 🙏🏻 Ingastas (talk) 14:09, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ingastas: That would only create more problems with regards to paid editing and wont solve anything, see: Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest#Paid_editing. This is an encyclopedia and articles are not supposed to be birthday presents, they are created because of the subject's notability and verified by reliable sources. You're welcome to contribute here but avoid making any contributions in areas where you have a conflict of interest. Shellwood (talk) 15:58, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that's the thing. This person has a remarkable biography and career in the Irish Hairdressing community, who is multi champion in national, European, and International competitions. She is also a qualified hair scientist who developed some unique hair and skin solutions that help people already.
By mentioning this as a Birthday present, I only meant that I wanted to commit to completing the article before that date. But the article would be unbiased containing only the facts that can be verified by the Irish Hairdressing Federation, and many other industry professionals. Hence, I'm not just trying to create a some sort of a social media page here, I'm here to state the facts about the person who deserves this 100%. I'm pretty determined about publishing this article and it would be great if you could help.
If not, I will seek other solution to complete this goal. Thank you for your understanding. Ingastas (talk) 17:27, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ingastas: I can't be of any help to you, you have been alerted about the relevant guidelines and policies. Yes, your purpose behind this is clear: My wife is turning 50 in a month and I wanted to get this for her as a present, I have seen many similar attempts over the years and they never work and are just a waste of time. I will echo what I said above, you are welcome to make edits here as long as they don't contain any conflicts of interest. Shellwood (talk) 23:06, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Shellwood, I just made a page for Rosemary Carpenter Fitzgerald and I was trying to add a template. I also wanted to create a page for Mark Twain's son who died as a baby, but whenever I try to create a template, the page says "Template search: Find the template you want to insert by searching for an identifying keyword. Templates that have descriptions are more likely to work well with the visual editor" and then a search bar.
I will look at the article you sent me. CallieCrewmanAuthor (talk) 01:59, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from KRKwrites (14:43, 23 February 2024)[edit]

Hello Shellwood! :) I've been going a bit ham on editing Wikipedia, and there are a few pages (Top Cow Productions, Billy Frank Jr., American Booksellers for Free Expression, & Axel F) where I made some pretty hefty edits. If you have some time and would be willing to take a look at what I've been up to, I would really appreciate that - it would be great to know whether I'm on the right track or not (and if not, what I could be doing better). Definitely no pressure and no worries if not though, I understand it's kind of a big & broad ask and that you must be really busy! :) Thank you for your time. --KRKwrites (talk) 14:43, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Shellwood,

I just wanted to thank you for untagging all of those categories that I tagged for CSD C1 today. I looked into it and I still can't explain why all of those "by importance" categories emptied out...and then filled up again an hour later. It must have been a change with a template because no editor emptied and filled these categories. But I appreciate you taking care of them for me. Have a great weekend! Liz Read! Hi Shellwood, I'm new and you're my mentor (thanks!)

I signed up primarily to create an article about the non-profit I volunteer for. I've read the Conflict of Interest page and am left confused. I'm not being paid by anyone and have drafted the page in factual and neutral terms. I don't want to make anyone angry or violate any policies, though.

Can you offer me any advice or guidance? --DoctorScurvy (talk) 19:29, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@DoctorScurvy: Hi and thanks for taking the guidelines about conflict of interests seriously. As mentioned in the page about COI editing linked in your draft, this is strongly discouraged and non-profit projects can still come off as promotional or advertising, see WP:PROMO. I don't know this organization, my best advice to you is to stay open with your conflict of interest to Knox Makers as you have done on the draft talk page, keep an impartial language and tone, see WP:IMPARTIAL. But even with all this said and done your draft must pass as being a notable organization covered in reliable sources, you can read more about it here: WP:ORG. Shellwood (talk) 22:39, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I certainly appreciate your time and attention! I'll review the pages you linked and look back critically on my draft.
I'm unclear whether, as mentor, you're able to see my draft article..? I was wondering if you had any specific suggestions for improvement and whether your caution regarding notability implied skepticism that we'd qualify. I've waited for years to attempt publishing an article for that very reason and feel we are legitimately notable now, but of course I'm sure everyone feels that way about nonprofits they care about.
Thanks again for your kind assistance. DoctorScurvy (talk) 23:18, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DoctorScurvy: Yes I have seen the draft. I have no specific advices to give other than what I already mentioned since I'm not familiar with organization. Shellwood (talk) 15:18, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024[edit]

Hello Shellwood,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.
