Yes, that is folio f.004r of De Ingeneis, and your information is not entirely correct. The chain pump as such is actually known since antiquity, only a certain new type which works with soft balls instead if wooden plates is attributed to the Tatars by Taccola. But I would upload the pic only together with all the rest (58), which however requires a lot of time, since each has to be named correctly. I have not much time now and therefore it is only worth doing if the article is simultaneously enlarged substantially, perhaps to Good article status. Randier's La Royale has just arrived, courtesy of amazon.fr. What a magnificent volume! Now I can see where you got some of your images. I particularly liked the photo of the French marine infantry officer in Tonkin being carried in state in a hammock to meet some mandarin or other. I see you were the author of that neat map showing the travels of the Ongut monk Bar Sauma in the last two decades of the thirteenth century.

I have just decided to leave the Sino-French War alone for a bit and upload onto Wikipedia about 400 pages of stuff on the Nestorians that's been on my computer for more than a decade . See my new article, Dioceses of the Church of the East. This is stuff that is going eventually to go into my second book on the Nestorians, The Ecclesiastical Organisation of the Church of the East to 1318 (the first one went from 1318 onwards), but in the meantime I've decided to share it with the world, or at least that part of the world that consults English Wikipedia.

You will see at a glance that what it needs is maps, and my thoughts immediately turned to you, as master map-maker to the gentry. Most existing maps of Nestorian dioceses are incomplete, inaccurate or both. I did a PhD thesis on this subject, and happen to know where they all were. I would therefore love to put some authoritative maps of the diocesan structure on Wikipedia. How do we do it? Do I have to give you long and precise 'target indications', as I once did with the map for the Sino-French War, so that we both waste a lot of time, or is there an easy way for me to edit a map created by you? Not that time is a problem. This project is going to involve about 120 articles and the next five years of my life, so we can sort things out gradually.

For starters, would it be possible for you to amend that Bar Sauma map to get rid of his travel itinerary and the current title, leaving in the place names and the physical relief, and re-title the map 'The Mission Field of the Church of the East, 1281'. I will then consider where to go from there.

Looking forward to working with you on this project. If it works it will move WikiProject Assyria away from being simply a platform for Assyrian nationalists, which is what it seems to be at present.

I've been experimenting, without much success, to get good quality reproduction of the Powerpoint map I did. I've found that saving in JPEG format loses quality (perhaps I'm doing it the wrong way). I've tried uploading a pdf version (edit my image by replacing jpg with pdf and you'll find a much better version of the map, also uploaded to Wikipedia. Hi PHG,

Thanks for that interesting stuff you have dug out on French attempts to cosy up to Japan against China before and during the Sino-French War. I'm going to search Albert Billot's L'affaire du Tonkin, the standard French diplomatic history of the Sino-French War, to see if he can add anything to your research.

What I would like to do eventually is merge your new section into the existing section 'China's fear of Japan', and probably cut it down a bit. At the end of the day, France and Japan did not become allies, and I think it unbalances the main article to devote so much space to something that never happened. On the other hand, I've long been wanting to create a new article, Diplomacy of the Sino-French War, and that would be the natural home for a discussion of French overtures to Japan. I'll try to get round to it before long.

I'll get back to you after I've seen what Billot has to say on the subject.

Thanks. I've made some amendments, mostly minor and stylistic, but you may have views on them. Personally I thought the map was overdominant and confusing - it only showed modern political boundaries which obviously didn't exist at the time, and in my view it didn't add much and distracted from your excellent text and the other images. On consistency, I've changed the refs to the Greek settlement to Massalia, rather than (modern) Marseilles or (Roman) Massilia. But I think the article as a whole is great, thanks. Good work finding those altarpiece fragments. But they might be improved with better labling of thier origin; are you sure they are from a monastic altarpieces, rather than a parochial one? Good question! I double-checked the Museum of London notice: the fragments are not specifically described as monastic or parochial, but the attached notice specifically explains the destructions of carvings during the "Dissolution", of which these fragments are shown as an example. The fragments are also part of an exhibit about the "Dissolution" proper, in which the introduction mentions the destruction of "religious houses". Indeed; if the Museum of London is classifying them that way; then it is not the function of Wikipedia to second guess them. And I suppose they may well have come from archeological excavations in one of the London Houses. That said, Henry's orders to his commissioners led to their destroying shrines and allegedly "abused images" of saints. Henry had no objection to altars as such, nor to the standard iconography of images of the passion; moreover moveable carved panels, like stained glass, might be expected to have had a ready resale market in parish churches. Hi PHG. I don't have a problem with using Guillaume Brouscon's map at the top - but it is a pity it's such a poor resolution image! Is there any chance of a better copy? I really like the idea of whole Dieppe maps being profiled at the start, rather than just showing the Jave La Grande bit continually! If there isnt a better Brouscon image, why not keep the Vallard at the head and use Brouscon further on? But I am not in favour of the enlarged sailing ship image from the Vallard - I cannot see what purpose this serves. Thanks again for your kind comments about my book. I hope you find much of interest in it - but please do let me know if you have any criticisms, suggestions, comments, etc. BTW, You have got the "collectors' edition" of the book :^).

After about 50 copies of the book were sold someone noticed that the second Chinese character on the front cover (the second one down in the line at the far right of the box of Chinese text). The character han in the title, Hou Hanshu, had been changed to a very similar-looking character mo. I could not believe it, I was SO upset, but immediately emailed the publishers and asked them to halt production (luckily it is a print-on-demand setup so here weren't hundreds of thousands of books already published and having to be trashed).

Anyway, while trying to fix the cover file I discovered what had happened - I had clipped the text from a WORD document and inserted it into a pdf file and the computer changed the character to a similar-looking but totally wrong one - it happened again while I was trying to repair the file. Well, at least I felt slightly mollified - although I should have checked the text again - I had no idea the computer would substitute one character for another when I was doing a relatively straightforward cut and paste job.

So, it won't be printed again until I O.K. another proof of the book (which should be in the mail to me now). In the meantime Amazon.com is still taking orders and, if all goes well, the book should be back in production by the end next week.

I hope having the wrong character on the cover will not bother you too much - but, if it does, please let me know.

Hi again. I love the banknote and corresponding plate at Talk:Yuan Dynasty! It's an excellent image. Although Economy of the Song Dynasty has two images showing banknotes, the article for Song Dynasty actually has no currency image at the moment. The only Chinese dynasty article which now doesn't require a currency picture is Han Dynasty, while Economy of the Han Dynasty has an abundance of coin pictures. I recently looked at the Maurya Empire page and noticed that the punchmarked coin used as an illustration is an example of Gupta-Hardaker 450, which they assign to the (pre-Maurya) Nanda period of Magadha. Of course we don't know for sure if this is correct and the coin may be a Maurya issue, but I wonder if it wouldn't be better to use a coin that the most used reference does assign to the Mauryas? If you agree, and wish to replace the image, please feel free to download any image you prefer from the Maurya page at coinindia.com. Or, if you prefer, I could do so and write a small section on the Mauryan punch-marked coinage and add to the article.

Dear PHG, I was reviewing the Nahapana page and was wondering how you arrived at the date 119 for the start of his rule. The date of 124 for the end of his rule comes from Rapson, but this is almost certainly incorrect as it is based on the assumption that the dated inscriptions in Nahapana's name are in the Vikram era of the year 78. Since the last known inscription of Nahapana is dated 46, that would place him in the year 124 CE. But his reign was a lot longer than 5 years so I am puzzled how you got 119 for the start of his reign.

If its OK by you, I will make some edits to the page to add some more recent thinking about his dates (other than Senior's). I suspect his reign was entirely in the first century ... Jha and Rajgor place it c. 45-95, and I wonder if it might not even be earlier. Nobody has yet adequately explained how and where Nahapana and Chastana were ruling simultaneously.

Hi again! Good to see you doing some edits on the Kujula Kadphises article! I think the article badly needs a facelift. I have just taken the liberty of exchanging some (unfootnoted) quotes from the Hou Hanshu which were based on my earlier draft translation which was on the Silk Road Seattle website, with more up-to-date ones from my book. Now, I have been asked by administrators not to use my own book without discussing it first with others - and maybe asking others to do any editing or quotes using it. So, I wonder if you would take a look at what I have done and, if you have any problems or queries, leave a note on the Talk page, please?

Also, I do think we should have a quote from the Rabatak inscription - preferably from one of Sims-Williams recent versions - particularly the section showing that Kanishka was descended from Kujula. Hello PHG! You knew me as CoinIndia, but I have changed my name at the suggestion of one of the editors. I have a question for you, in the context of the article on the Western Satraps, which I think you originated.

The question is, who are the three kings listed first in the king list ... Yapirajaya, Hospises and Higaraka? I can find no reference to them in the standard books and would like to delete them from the list. Would that be OK?

Could Rhapta have been in modern-day Mozambique?

Does anyone have access to a copy of the "Periplus"? - either in the original Greek or in translation?

Carl Peters implies that it states that Rhapta lay, not at the mouth of its river, but some distance upstream, adding that this requirement would fit Quelimane quite well. But is he quoting the "Periplus" correctly?

Incidentally, remembering the successful Phoenician circumnavigation of Africa in 600 BC, it is by no means impossible that subsequent travellers would have ventured as far as the mouth of the Zambesi (or even beyond) - at the time when the "Periplus" was being compiled. I used to work in the Zimbabwean Meteorological Office, and can confirm that alternations in the coastal wind pattern did facilitate two-way journeys there.

I have come across yourself and wondered if you would give an independent view (or point me to someone you think would be better placed) on an article up for deletion in line with wiki policy, which looking at your profile, you obviously have very significant experience and history with wiki have some greater independent knowledge on the specific subject matter, namely you say are into running/fitness and are ex military. The article is Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Rob_Edmond I have been tagged as a result of my interaction on the discussion as a sockpuppet but with no justification given? I can understand how you feel about WP politics as I went through something like that myself. However, the politics are not WP's (for the most part). These people out there are determined to wreck or control everything. First they appeared as vandals. Then they got a little smarter. They threw in large numbers of stubs to get themselves made administrator. From that position they did quite a lot of damage. I followed one of them as an example. He had his own website with stated mission to remove all the falsity from the Internet (can you imagine? Another Hitler). He railed against WP as the worst offender. Suddenly he was not only in WP he was an administrator, and as such, he went around wrecking articles and driving editors off. I quit for over a year. But, the fact is, WP did not die, it kept getting bigger and better. The articles were still out there for better or for worse depending on what the public does with it. So I got back on. I find they seem to have much better control over the articles. I have not heard a word from my old enemies. Of course, I have more experience now also. I'm just relating my experience here for whatever it is worth. It does take a lot of time. Nothing stays the same, you know?

Now, when you removed yourself you left some unfinished business, one of which is the "Hellenistic Partitions" template and associated articles. It is only used twice, but then it is a specialized subject. I like it. It was copied and enhanced on the Greek WP. I got no plans to enhance it but I would like to continue its use. There are, however, some mysterious symbols in it, which I cannot seem to figure out; to wit, the * and the +. What were those for? As of this moment unless I can learn from you or from somewhere what they are intended to convey, I am going to take them out as an unnecessary complication. I understand the table, I don't understand your notation. They look like weird science. I will give you a few days (only) to reply. Later of course we could always put them back in if warranted.

I got to go now. I can appreciate your feelings. To me it is a matter of how much time one has. You can see the thing grow over the years. Sooner or later all the jerks get weeded out. Your time is your decision however. Best of luck.Botteville (talk) 15:03, 17 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
