Johndoe10001 and external links[edit]

Hi Emir of Wikipedia, I recently noticed that Johndoe10001 recently reverted one of your edits, the same user has been reverting my edits over external links as well over the past couple weeks. There is currently a discussion going on concerning this topic and if you are so inclined you may contribute to the conversation. However if you do not feel inclined please do not feel pressured to take part in the conversation, or you may even defend Johndoe10001's edits if you wish. Possibility of providing your input on a Peer Review for Regine Velasquez's entry[edit]

Hi Emir of Wikipedia,

I'm writing to ask whether you would consider having a look at the article. I'm aware that you've been involved with a few PRs before. I've given it a major rewrite and complete overhaul. I began working on the article late October when it looked like this and somehow ended up rewriting the whole thing and aiming for potentially FA. This isn't a process I've been through before, but I have been reading the reviews here in preparation, and am familiar with FAC demands. I would very much appreciate a fresh set of eyes and happily address any concerns you may have.

Thanks! Pseud 14 (talk) 05:54, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Exo discography / Using scripts that change dashes[edit]

Hi. You recently used a few scripts on Exo discography. Generally these were pretty helpful changes, however, you used a script that changed en dashes to em dashes. Thanks for helping with False allegations edit[edit]

Hello Emir,

You recently reverted some of my edits and let me know why in a helpful way. I am relatively new to Wikipedia and I appreciate you helping me learn proper policies. I know Wikipedia says to "be bold," but I obviously didn't understand the limits and want to do everything by the book. I will take it to the talk page because I'm certain scrutiny will reveal the truth :)

Take care, Plantlady223 (talk) 17:24, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Plantlady223: Hi. You have said "False allegations", but I have not edited a page with a name like that. Am I right in thinking you are on about the section on MeToo? Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 17:35, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Emir of Wikipedia: Yes, I meant that section on that page. I'm still learning. :) Plantlady223 (talk) 17:48, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Not a problem. If you want help learning then feel free to contact me. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 17:51, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Is it okay if I contact you after I make the section on the Talk page? Just in case you had suggestions. Plantlady223 (talk) 17:55, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 17:55, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I had one more question. When I'm helping make a biography of a living person, what is the best way to get a picture that's allowed? Is it okay if I take my own picture of them? (I was just curious as an example; I don't think I'll see anyone in person) What about pictures taken by other people? Plantlady223 (talk) 18:18, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The best way would be if you took a picture and uploaded it to Commons, however you would obviously have to put it under a suitable license. With regards to other people's pictures you would have to find a suitably incensed one or persuade a photograph to release it under a suitable license and then upload that to Commons. However with regards to deceased people you can use a copyrighted image under fair use like I recently used File:Hal Finney (computer scientist).jpg at Hal Finney (computer scientist), but this requires certain criteria being fulfilled. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 18:23, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for answering my questions. I felt so lost and you're making it seem more straightforward. I started documenting the point on the Talk page. I'm going through the stats one by one because every source I've looked at so far is either fake or doesn't match what is said in book. I know that Wikipedia wants to make sure everything is sourced properly to ensure accuracy. Does this look good to you, should I keep going? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Me_Too_(hashtag) Plantlady223 (talk) 22:10, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thats look like some good work you have done. I will discuss there about this issue to help keep it open for others to contribute. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 22:40, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Diana Prince[edit]

Diana Prince should be a separate article from Wonder Woman. The character Diana Prince was not just Wonder Woman, but Diana White, the person who Diana took the identity from. She could be an alternate version of Wonder Woman otherwise but not to be merged with Wonder Woman to avoid confusion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adwonder (talk • contribs) 06:51, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Adwonder: Please discuss at Talk:Wonder Woman#Proposed merge with Diana Prince. --Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 09:21, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Because the template was originally placed in December 2017 and the dates were subsequently changed by an account who added unsourced POV cruft (that has since been removed) to the article. Seems like the date of original templates' placements should generally be retained within WP (for instance, templates can place an article within internal housekeeping categories) unless there is a clear reason within WP policies/guidelines to change it. Shearonink (talk) 20:01, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Shearonink: But how are we meant to know then when it has been checked? Template:EngvarB says This is a dated template. After an article has been initially tagged, and bearing in mind article evolution, periodic script or bot runs clean up spellings, correcting any new introductions since its last visit, and updating the visit date on the template. and Template:Use dmy dates says After being tagged, and bearing in mind article evolution, periodic script or bot runs clean up formats, correcting any new introductions since its last visit, and updating the visit date on the template. --Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 20:15, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
So then the template is supposed to be the date the bot/s run their clean-ups etc., not necessarily the date that the template was added to the article....Ok, yeah. But the user who altered the dates in this case wasn't a bot. It's fine. Shearonink (talk) 23:11, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

X Prize Foundation[edit]

 – Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 20:51, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Emir,

I just received your message in regards to the X Prize Foundation article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_Prize_Foundation).

Yes, I do work for the Foundation. We had some requests to clarify some items on our article since they were not accurate. The main summary of changes were as follows:

- The Tricorder XPRIZE was awarded, so I moved that to past contests and added the end year. - We launched two new competitions last year, the Women's Safety and Water Abundance XPRIZEs. I added brief overviews for them. - Removed something listed as a Future XPRIZE that is no longer being pursued. - The Board of Trustees don't run the organization, the Board of Directors (a subset of the Trustees) do. The Trustees are still very active in what we do though, so I separated them out. This change to board structure happened ~2 years ago.

I hope I was able to update the page in an objective manner. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zach xprize (talk • contribs)

Sockpuppet advice[edit]

Hi! I've seen that you've reported a number of suspected sockpuppet accounts of Thepoliticsexpert. I've recently taken a couple of articles originally created by this user to AfD, and on one there are two keep !votes and a backhanded delete !vote from single-purpose accounts. One of these also removed my PROD from another, now-deleted at AfD, article created by Thepoliticsexpert. Given the sockpuppet activity associated with this user, I was wondering whether this behaviour is sufficient evidence to take these accounts to sockpuppet investigation? This isn't something I've had to deal with before — I hope you don't mind my asking your advice. Thanks in advance! Ralbegen (talk) 16:00, 24 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Ralbegen: Sorry for not replying promptly. In the future I suggest you just go straight to the SPI at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Thepoliticsexpert, this is a problematic user who has been engaging in cross-wiki abuse for quite a while now and therefore I suspect many people will be looking at the SPI who can help if I can't. --Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 20:04, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@E to the Pi times i: It just means that the page is fine so there is not really any implications in this case. Page curation is mainly used to review pages in the article space but all new pages such as your User:E to the Pi times i/Maintenance come in it too. How is linking to a source copyright violation?[edit]

Asking genuinely in good faith. Referring to your edits on Talk:Mohammed_bin_Rashid_Al_Maktoum#Sheikha_Shamsa_Al_Maktoum_incident . The video linked is a statement by person and channel is managed by the legal firm representing that person. Ohsin (talk) 13:52, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Ohsin: Please see WP:LINKVIO. It doesn't matter if the video is a statement by the person or not it matters whether it is copyright infringement or not. The website mentioned in the description of the video attributes the screenshots to "Detained in Dubai" which is different to the uploading page of "Escape from Dubai". --Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 13:56, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Detained in Dubai manages that Youtube channel with name 'Escape from Dubai' and website check their contact details Ohsin (talk) 14:18, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That website doesn't say they manage the YouTube channel it just says their are in association with them. Even still if we use that source we must be careful to comply with all policies. --Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 14:25, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure who owns the video, apparently it was distributed by an unnamed US attorney. Ammar Naskshawani[edit]

Hi Emir of Wikipedia,

I wanted to request your support in updated Seyed Ammar's wikipedia. I have noticed you rolled it back. However, in light of some updates, the updates I made were authenticated (some by Seyed Ammar himself) and other's by materials online. Can we revert the version to the one before rollback? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Snowbird2017 (talk • contribs)

@Snowbird2017: What do you mean by Seyed Ammar himself? Do you have a WP:COI? --Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 14:30, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Emir of Wikipedia: No WP:COI - but things that were verbally confirmed through interviews/lectures. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Snowbird2017 (talk • contribs)
In that case can you please discuss the changes at Talk:Ammar Naskshawai, this means that other people interested and knowledgeable --Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 15:29, 1 April 2018 (UTC) about the topic can help. --Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 15:29, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
According to his Harvard webpage (https://www.belfercenter.org/person/seyed-ammar-nakhjavani)- the Official spelling of his name is Nakhjavani. Additionally, his most recent academic post is at Harvard. As per the biography, his post before that was at Hartford Seminary. I would update the description on the main page to reflect. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Snowbird2017 (talk • contribs)
Please discuss at Talk:Ammar Nakshawani, and also sign your posts with ~~~~. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 19:32, 2 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Reception: Review Scores[edit]

Hi Emir,

nearly every movie mentions some kind of 'user-generated scores' (like imdb, rotten tomatoes etc.) in their reception section, just like Terminator 2: Judgment Day or Titanic.

I don't think there is any kind of restriction as these scores are well-established.

Best regards PassioEtDesiderium — Preceding unsigned comment added by PassioEtDesiderium (talk • contribs) 01:27, 3 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@PassioEtDesiderium: I have removed the IMDb references from Terminator 2: Judgment Day and what I think you meant Titanic (1997 film). With regards to RT there is a difference between the critic scores and user scores. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 19:50, 3 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Transclusion?[edit]

I'm trying to figure out this edit. Is the lead transcluded somewhere, or is something else going on? -- BullRangifer (talk) PingMe 04:39, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@BullRangifer: Portal:Donald Trump/Intro included an outdated (and possibly copyright violating) version of the lead. To fix these issues I attempted to transclude the lead, but the technical version of the lead includes things not needed for the portal so I made a special section for the actual lead text. --Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 18:41, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ah ha! Makes sense. -- BullRangifer (talk) PingMe 18:46, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sock of Ehsan iq?[edit]

Since you filed the latest SPI concerning Ehsan iq, would you care to check the edits of WeWuzPhoenicians?

WeWuzPhoenicians editing mirrors 151.236.179.140 on Tiberius Julius Balbillus and Titus Julius Balbillus articles. --Kansas Bear (talk) 19:39, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Kansas Bear: I am sorry but I won't be much help there based on behavioral analysis. The only reason I reported it at Ehsan_iq was because an IP randomly brought up that account and admitted to being blocked. It looks like the IP you have mentioned has already been blocked as it matched the range of previous IPs, as the edits are similar I could say that the accounts might be linked but I don't really know the socks behaviours. Apologizes for not being more helpful. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 20:34, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Your note at NeilN's talk page[edit]

Hi, Emir! Just a comment regarding this edit: when you are suggesting that a user may be a problem or suggesting that an eye be kept on them - is it really a good idea to ping that user in your message? --MelanieN (talk) 22:51, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If they are not a problem with regards to the their username then can defend themselves there. With regards to their editing that is a separate issue that I have not really looked into, but obviously an admin like you can help with that. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 22:54, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Merge proposal about Charles and Diana[edit]

Hi Emir. As you are already aware there has been a proposal suggested since March 2018 for two different articles to be merged into the article about Charles and Diana's wedding. As you and I have already opposed it and there has been no "support" votes in over a month, is it possible for me or you to close the discussion, or should I ask an administrator to do it? Keivan.fTalk 17:00, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Keivan.f: I closed the discussion. --Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 19:55, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Keivan.f: My close was reverted by Capmo --Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 19:11, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I know, and I don't know why he resists on merging those pages. Is there anyway we can close it again or should we just wait for a consensus? Keivan.fTalk 22:45, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I left a new message on the article's talk page. It's absolutely ridiculous to have those articles merged when we have separate pages for the birdal gowns of lesser known princesses. If these pages get merged, then basically all of those other pages need to get merged as well. Keivan.fTalk 23:05, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'll for someone else to close it but thanks for the new message on the article talk page. --Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 19:07, 17 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please explain lead transclusion[edit]

Emir,

I'd like to use the lead transclusion method you applied on Portal:Donald Trump/Intro, but I can't get it to work with any other topic.

This works: {{#section:Donald Trump|Lead text}}

This doesn't work: {{#section:Physical geography|Lead text}}

What is {{#section:}}, and please provide links to documentation on this.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   23:18, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

P.S.: please {{ping}} me in your reply.

@The Transhumanist: Hello. You are probably aware of this already but please see Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#RfC: Ending the system of portals before putting in any time, effort, or hard work in the portals that may soon be undone.
The lead transclusion method I used at the Donald Trump portal is to transclude a manually marked section. {{#section:}} transcludes a section of a page, the technical lead includes the the infobox and the hatnote so I marked the actual lead text with <section begin=Lead text /> and <section end=Lead text />, you can obviously label this something else instead of "Lead text". This is documented at Help:Labeled_section_transclusion#Section_marking, there could perhaps be a more elegant solution but this works. Hope this helps, sorry if it is a bit confusing but I can't think how else to word it. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 14:43, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I am aware of the of the MfD that was posted as an RfC. The primary way that deletions are averted is to fix the problem with the nominated page(s) while the deletion discussion is taking place. Fixing 1500 pages is a challenge, but a worthwhile one, I believe. Also, unless the opinions of the newcomers to the discussion shift radically toward deletionist, the portals are safe. Currently, there is no new consensus. leaving the portals to people wishing to improve them. Once the problems are fixed, the rationales to delete them will be minuscule in the face of the support to keep them.
Looking over the problems of portals reported in the discussion, they boil down to 1) out of date / lack of maintenance (lack of volunteer labor) 2) useless (static / unchanging) and 3) low traffic (few repeat visits).
The 3rd is to be expected, since portals get their traffic internally, rather than from external search engine results. Traffic would naturally be higher if users found portals worthwhile enough to return to them. Dynamic content, in the form of randomly generated on-topic selections, would be a valuable service, turning the portals into a form of periodical or newsletter.
The initial design concept for portals was that they would each be a main page for a subject. The reality has been that they have become a snap shot (one day's version) of a main page for their respective subjects. Imagine if Wikipedia's main page never changed its content. That portals never became what they were envisioned to be is the crux of the matter here.
I believe the solution is automation, which is why I am interested in the method you used. Refreshing the intro entry so it doesn't go stale, using transclusion, is one form of automation that can help. Thank you for taking the time to explain it to me.
By the way, you were right about there being more elegant solutions. For example:
{{#invoke:String|match|pattern='''.+|s = {{#lsth:Water}}}}
That transcludes the lead from water, but only everything after the first bold code, in order to skip hatnotes and gripe tags. The regex in that example could be modified to remove templates as well, and infoboxes, etc. The benefit of this approach is that it requires absolutely no coding to be added to the source pages.
I'm looking for volunteers interested in helping to make portals configurable and automated, to turn them into specialized main pages that do not rely on human labor to keep them maintained. In addition to programmers, we need designers, to help figure out what portals need to be able to do, to locate where the resources (content) are for accomplishing that, and discern how to differentiate that content so that it can be selected automagically.
Are you interested? If I created a page or thread to share ideas on improving portals, would you drop in from time to time to comment?    — The Transhumanist   01:12, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
P.S.: please {{ping}} me in your reply.
@The Transhumanist: I think you should mention at the RfC that you have solutions to the problems. With regards to helping with other portals I don't really have that much experience but I would be willing to learn and contribute if you made a page or thread about their improvement. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 20:20, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think the RfC has nearly run its course. To make it in before someone archives it, I've posted a response there; and I used some of the wording you inspired above. (Thank you). By the way, you have yourself a deal. I'll let you know when a project page is ready.    — The Transhumanist   23:12, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've been looking around the portals, and they are rather impressive. I don't see what the naysayers are complaining about. It is true that many of the pages are static and so the repeat visitors (editors) probably got bored with them. But there seems to be an endless supply of new readers, as page traffic remains pretty steady.
As I peruse them, I keep finding gems. Like the fully automated Portal:Wikimedia featured content.
Okay, I'm working on the page you suggested above about improving portals. I think I'm not even half done with it yet. Would you mind taking a look at what's there so far, and let me know what you think of it, whether it is easily understandable, how it can be improved, and so on? I intend to write opening statements for each of the empty sections on the talk page, but I don't think I've even identified all the features of portals yet. There will be a discussion section for improving the design of each common component.
Any and all feedback, ideas, and suggestions are welcome. Feel free to post them below...    — The Transhumanist   12:59, 18 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
P.S.: please {{ping}} me in your reply. Thank you. -TT
@The Transhumanist: WP:WPPORT looks like a good start. The main thing I would suggest now is to highlight this to other editors, we don't want this to end up inactive like people claimed about portals. Also if you are not aware there template:nw which writes a message asking to be pinged in replies instead of manually typing, something else that we can somewhat automate 😊. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 20:47, 18 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There's no danger of it becoming inactive while we're around. It's not ready for prime time yet. The revamp needs to be completed before spreading the word. But, you need not worry, I will be sending out invites. As you have probably noticed, the volunteer section indicates that updates will be sent to those who sign up. That should help establish some ongoing lines of communication, and get additional people involved. The wikiproject page overhaul should be done in a few days, hopefully less. By the way, thank you for volunteering, and thanks for the template idea, I've made a new one ({{pme}}).    — The Transhumanist   23:06, 18 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
P.S.: Please ping me in your reply. Thank you.

Saeed II of Dubai 's brothers[edit]

Do you still think that the brothers of Saeed bin Maktoum bin Hasher Al MaktoumSheikh Juma bin Maktoum Al Maktoum and Sheikh Hasher bin Maktoum Al Maktoum—should be given their own articles? Векочел (talk) 04:12, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A little extra caution[edit]

Hi, Emir - I'm of the mind that it would be a wise investment for me to get a different perspective from an uninvolved editor (or two) about what/how much would be reasonable to add. I've queried an editor whose views doesn't always align with mine, but whose judgement I trust, especially considering the added material is likely to be challenged. Does that make sense? Hat of Amy Coney Barrett RSN[edit]

Seriously, what is this?[2] All the users who have advocated for removal of content sourced to the NYT source have characterized the NYT article in question as unreliable (two users referred to it as a hit piece, and the third claimed that the article contained unsupported insinuation). I demonstrated this in the thread in question, yet you claim "Nobody is saying it is not RS from what I can see." Snooganssnoogans (talk) 15:10, 1 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

From what I can see the users you are on about have not said that it is unreliable. If you are on about Lionelt they have literally wrote "This is about WP:DUE amongst other things. Not WP:RS". I did not see anyone say it was unreliable if someone has said that they feel free to take off the hat and present that there, but otherwise you should get a Wikipedia:Third opinion if the talkpage of the article is not helpful. --Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 16:03, 1 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
When someone says that a source is a hit piece and that it contains unsupported insinuation and that it should be removed for those reasons, are they not saying that the source is unreliable? The claim that the NYT is not a RS is of course so absurd that nobody would cop to it, but the reasoning for excluding the source is solely based on arguments that the content in the source is unreliable (e.g. it's a "hit piece" and contains "unsupported insinuation"). Snooganssnoogans (talk) 16:26, 1 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Snooganssnoogans: Has the issue been resolved now? Have they decided to include the content from NYT? Feel free to remind them about Wikipedia:RSOPINION if they have forgotten that. --Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 17:29, 3 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No, the content has not been included in the article, and I'm pretty sure that it never will unless I take it to a RfC or get broader Wiki input. My experience with Lionelt is that the user will edit-war to keep the content out (in particular, if another editor partakes), staunchly oppose any inclusion no matter how reliably sourced (i.e. more RS won't matter) and threaten sanctions if someone takes action without his explicit approval. The dispute still revolves around the accuracy of the NY Times (i.e. it's a dispute over whether the NY Times articles is reliable), regardless of what the users on that talk page say when they face scrutiny by the broader Wikipedia community. Snooganssnoogans (talk) 17:47, 3 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Snooganssnoogans: You don't have to go as extreme as an RfC for broader input, other options like WP:3O and WP:DRN are available. If that user is problematic then you should report them to an admin, they should definitely not be threatening sanctions at anyone which sounds like a WP:OWNER. If the dispute is about if the NY Times article is an RS then tell them nobody on the noticeboard said it was unreliable, if they are bringing forward the argument that it is undue then you will have to prove it is due. Wei Dai Copyright attribution simplification? Suggestion[edit]

Hello Emir of Wikipedia, I saw that you added this Copyright notice to the Wei Dai article. This expanded upon the notice added by User:Diannaa. I wonder if all this can be simplified as I am the author of the referenced article. The original article was actually written for Wikipedia, but was later deleted per WP:N. I then decided to publish on the Bitcoin Wiki. Eventually it made its way back to Wikipedia (thanks to User:Xinbenlv) and recently passed another WP:N challenge. Seems it is finally here to stay.

Does it still make sense to reference the external (bitcoin.it) "source"?

If so, we can probably remove Taras as an author of the copy/pasted text because his stub article was 100% removed when I published the actual content which was later used here on Wikipedia (see diff).

Thoughts?

@Diannaa:, @Xinbenlv: Anything to add here?

Cheers, JonathanCross (talk) 17:52, 2 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Explanation for Recent Contribution at Ivanka Trump[edit]

Hello Emir of Wikipedia!

Thank you for reaching out to me, it was very helpful and I am grateful. I am still very new here on Wikipedia and am constantly learning. What has me so interested in contributing is my love for grammatical editing.

The explanation for my contribution on Ivanka Trump's page was not its being a controversial topic, as it's labelled. As you saw, I edited her described Alma mater. As she completed her degree from the University of Pennsylvania and not Georgetown University, it additionally included from where she transferred. I edited this for consistency with the rest of Wikipedia's pages. People do not regularly include in their Alma mater their first school if it isn't where they completed their degree or switched elsewhere. If we are to begin including the schools from where people transfer, we would also have to add Fordham University in Ivanka Trump's father's page and Villanova University in Bradley Cooper's. There are so many different examples. Now, those are changes I would not be against contributing, but in removing the one from Ivanka Trump's I only made a step toward consistency.

Again, I am grateful for your help. I did not previously see the location to add explanations to contributions. This response to you can in a way explain my decision making. Although you saw my choice for editing Ivanka Trump's page for being a controversial topic, it was instead for grammatical consistency with other pages and the understandings of other users and readers. Please, reach out to me if you want to understand my point more. I would be glad to hear more and listen more to greater advice in my future editing.

If there is a secondary source stating the full name or if Harris himself has stated it then use that as a reference, but we can't use birth documents unless a secondary source has confirmed it is him. Also in the future I think a discussion like this should take place on the article talkpage so other editors can contribute to it, as this is not a discussion about my personal conduct but article content. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 23:08, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This is most certainly a discussion of your personal conduct, since you made the edit I'm discussing. :-) But sure, I can leave a note on the article talk page. --MZMcBride (talk) 23:10, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

For what it's worth, sources such as <http://www.warner.theater/events/sam-harris-3265235/> use this name as well. Are you disputing the accuracy of this information? --MZMcBride (talk) 23:08, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

That source was not the one used in the article. I have not seen anything to such that source is incorrect so go ahead and cite that in the article please. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 23:10, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, thank you for the quick replies! I've added the text back and started a discussion on the article talk page. --MZMcBride (talk) 23:15, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:Southern Poverty Law Center[edit]

Some IP editor hid your 11 July 2018 reply to TFD at Talk:Southern Poverty Law Center:

This is not about if they are an RS, that discussion is currently taking place at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard/Archive1#Southern Poverty Law Center, but rather whether they are "widely cited in academic and media coverage of such groups and related issues".

Dervorguilla unhid. Now Malik Shabazz is advising her:

Unless you want to start seeing aggressive archiving of the talk page, knock off your edit-warring.

Zayed (birthdate)[edit]

Wotcha. Tiny, tiny point on Sheikh Zayed and that 1916 birthdate. Although the article linked does give 1916, the UAE is currently about halfway through celebrating 'The Year of Zayed' - 100 years since his birth. So that one online source is sort of arguing with an entire nation... ;) Best Alexandermcnabb (talk) 06:17, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yep that source does say 1916, so writing "His birth date is also reported to be in 1918" makes no sense when the article says 1918 already. I am not denying the celebrations but that source says " in 1916 (some put the date as 1918)", it not arguing but just presenting the differing views. Portals WikiProject update #022, 11 Nov 2018[edit]

Welcome AmericanAir88[edit]

Give a hearty welcome to AmericanAir88, who has adopted working on portals as one of his main purposes on Wikipedia. So far, he has created the following portals:

Way to go!

Where's Evad?[edit]

Evad disappeared from Wikipedia on October 18.

He has been, and will continue to be, sorely missed.

Hopefully, he is okay, on a Caribbean cruise or something.

The conversion continues[edit]

Portals of the old design, are slowly but surely being converted to the new single-page design.

One factor that has slowed things down is that for many sections, the section header call and section contents call are integrated into a template and buried in a lua module, locking them in on each portal. They have been that way for years.

This means that these sections can't be directly edited like the other sections on the same portal. So, search/replaces affect all the sections except those. So, upgrading headers on these portals, for example, misses the integrated sections and inadvertently results in 2 different header colors.

Before we can continue with the upgrade of these portals, the headers and section contents calls need to be restored to each portal, so that those can be edited in concert with the other sections on the portal, and worked on independently of each other.

This is underway, with a solution implemented on about 1/4 of the affected portals so far. Around 300 of them. The remaining 900 should be done within a couple weeks or so.

Going wide...[edit]

We now have banner-shaped pictures included in the introduction sections of 180 portals. The rarity of such pictures has made it difficult to find suitably narrow images for display across the tops of portals.

We have a solution for this, courtesy of FR30799386...

Most pictures are not banner-shaped. But, you can still use them as banners. Here's how:

{{Portal image banner|File:Blueberries .jpg |maxheight=120px |overflow=Hidden }}

Using both maxheight=120px and overflow=Hidden produces this:

Project's status[edit]

There are now 4,140 portals, with more being created almost daily. Prior to this project's reboot, portals were created at about the rate of 80 per year. Since April of this year, we've created about 2,600 new portals, or 32.5 years' worth at the old rate.

Of those new portals, about 3/4 of them need links leading to them. Almost all of them are linked to from the category system, but they still need links in article see also sections, at the bottom of navigation templates, and on the main portals list at Portal:Contents/Portals.

Of the 1500 portals created before the reboot, about 300 have been completely converted to the new design so far. About 1100 more have been partially converted, with intros, image slideshows, and associated wikimedia sections getting the most attention.

Discussion has resumed on the portal guidelines.

Until next issue...[edit]

See ya round the portal system!    — The Transhumanist   11:42, 11 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

NPR Newsletter No.15 16 November 2018[edit]

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months.

Hello Emir of Wikipedia,

Community Wishlist Survey – NPP needs you – Vote NOW
  • Community Wishlist Voting takes place 16 to 30 November for the Page Curation and New Pages Feed improvements, and other software requests. The NPP community is hoping for a good turnout in support of the requests to Santa for the tools we need. This is very important as we have been asking the Foundation for these upgrades for 4 years.
If this proposal does not make it into the top ten, it is likely that the tools will be given no support at all for the foreseeable future. So please put in a vote today.
We are counting on significant support not only from our own ranks, but from everyone who is concerned with maintaining a Wikipedia that is free of vandalism, promotion, flagrant financial exploitation and other pollution.
With all 650 reviewers voting for these urgently needed improvements, our requests would be unlikely to fail. See also The Signpost Special report: 'NPP: This could be heaven or this could be hell for new users – and for the reviewers', and if you are not sure what the wish list is all about, take a sneak peek at an article in this month's upcoming issue of The Signpost which unfortunately due to staff holidays and an impending US holiday will probably not be published until after voting has closed.

ArbCom 2018 election voter message[edit]

Hello, Emir of Wikipedia. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals update #023, 25 Nov 2018[edit]

There are now 4,180 portals.

Will we break 5,000 by the end of the year?

I know we can. But, that is up to you!

( New portals are created with {{subst:Basic portal start page}} or {{subst:bpsp}} )

Happy Holidays[edit]

Spread the WikiLove; use {{subst:Season's Greetings}} to send this message

Jingling along[edit]

The following portals have been created since the last issue:

Keep 'em coming!

By the way, the above list was generated using this Petscan query. It can be easily modified by changing the date. The data page (under the Output tab) also has options for receiving the data in CSV or tabbed format, which some operating systems automatically load into a spreadsheet program for ease of use, such as copying and pasting the desired column (like page names).

In closing[edit]

We'll keep it short this issue.

Expect a flood next time. Or the one after that.

NPR Newsletter No.16 15 December 2018[edit]

Hello Emir of Wikipedia,

Reviewer of the Year

This year's award for the Reviewer of the Year goes to Onel5969. Around on Wikipedia since 2011, their staggering number of 26,554 reviews over the past twelve months makes them, together with an additional total of 275,285 edits, one of Wikipedia's most prolific users.

Thanks are also extended for their work to JTtheOG (15,059 reviews), Boleyn (12,760 reviews), Cwmhiraeth (9,001 reviews), Semmendinger (8,440 reviews), PRehse (8,092 reviews), Arthistorian1977 (5,306 reviews), Abishe (4,153 reviews), Barkeep49 (4,016 reviews), and Elmidae (3,615 reviews).
Cwmhiraeth, Semmendinger, Barkeep49, and Elmidae have been New Page Reviewers for less than a year — Barkeep49 for only seven months, while Boleyn, with an edit count of 250,000 since she joined Wikipedia in 2008, has been a bastion of New Page Patrol for many years.

See also the list of top 100 reviewers.

Less good news, and an appeal for some help

The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.

Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019

At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.

Training video

Due to a number of changes having been made to the feed since this three-minute video was created, we have been asked by the WMF for feedback on the video with a view to getting it brought up to date to reflect the new features of the system. Please leave your comments here, particularly mentioning how helpful you find it for new reviewers.

Reverted false information about a film[edit]

Cardei012597, a source doesn't have to be a website. If a statement is added without a source then use template:citation needed instead of misleading someone into thinking that Wikipedia requires online sources. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 22:57, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Govvy, sorry for not making it clearly. Sadly it doesn't look like their is many good images at Commons:Category:Emilia Clarke. Infobox birth place[edit]

{{Infobox person}} #birth_place For modern subjects, the country should generally be a sovereign state; for United Kingdom locations, the constituent countries of the UK are sometimes used instead, when more appropriate in the context. That's why generally editors tend to do England for the constituent country and not UK in info boxes. Adding UK is kinda against the guideline there. Govvy (talk) 22:26, 17 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Govvy: sometimes used instead, when more appropriate in the context I don't see where anyone has shown it is more appropriate in this content. Editors doing "generally" doing one of the two possible options doesn't mean that the doing other option is kinda against the guideline. If you want to discuss this further then take it the article talkpage so that everybody can share their views. --Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 22:30, 17 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well that's the guideline for the infobox person template, why would I take it to talk page? I don't understand why people are not following the guidelines provided in the template. Have a look at Jimmy Wales, Patrick Stewart some other English bio's. Also, why are people removing England from the info box? It's London, England, UK. Not London, UK, that's really bad English language addressing. Govvy (talk) 22:36, 17 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Govvy: The guideline literally sometimes used instead, when more appropriate in the context. It doesn't say anything about discussing matters of an article off of the articles talk page when someone chooses to uses the other option if no reason has been given why the constituent country is more appropriate in the context. People are following the guidelines provided in the template, it is you who ain't. WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is not a reason to abandon WP:LOCALCONSENUS (which would be determined on the article talkpage). Add England in between London and the UK if you feel that is the best compromise then. --Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 22:40, 17 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Review newsletter July-August 2019[edit]

Hello Emir of Wikipedia,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

More new features are being added to the feed, including the important red alert for previously deleted pages. This will only work if it is selected in your filters. Best is to 'select all'. Do take a moment to check out all the new features if you have not already done so. If anything is not working as it should, please let us know at NPR. There is now also a live queue of AfC submissions in the New Pages Feed. Feel free to review AfCs, but bear in mind that NPP is an official process and policy and is more important.

QUALITY of REVIEWING

Articles are still not always being checked thoroughly enough. If you are not sure what to do, leave the article for a more experienced reviewer. Please be on the alert for any incongruities in patrolling and help your colleagues where possible; report patrollers and autopatrolled article creators who are ostensibly undeclared paid editors. The displayed ORES alerts offer a greater 'at-a-glance' overview, but the new challenges in detecting unwanted new content and sub-standard reviewing do not necessarily make patrolling any easier, nevertheless the work may have a renewed interest factor of a different kind. A vibrant community of reviewers is always ready to help at NPR.

Backlog

The backlog is still far too high at between 7,000 and 8,000. Of around 700 user rights holders, 80% of the reviewing is being done by just TWO users. In the light of more and more subtle advertising and undeclared paid editing, New Page Reviewing is becoming more critical than ever.

Move to draft

NPR is triage, it is not a clean up clinic. This move feature is not limited to bios so you may have to slightly re-edit the text in the template before you save the move. Anything that is not fit for mainspace but which might have some promise can be draftified - particularly very poor English and machine and other low quality translations.

Notifying users

Remember to use the message feature if you are just tagging an article for maintenance rather than deletion. Otherwise articles are likely to remain perma-tagged. Many creators are SPA and have no intention of returning to Wikipedia. Use the feature too for leaving a friendly note note for the author of a first article you found well made or interesting. Many have told us they find such comments particularly welcoming and encouraging.

PERM

Admins are now taking advantage of the new time-limited user rights feature. If you have recently been accorded NPR, do check your user rights to see if this affects you. Depending on your user account preferences, you may receive automated notifications of your rights changes. Requests for permissions are not mini-RfAs. Helpful comments are welcome if absolutely necessary, but the bot does a lot of the work and the final decision is reserved for admins who do thorough research anyway.

Other news

School and academic holidays will begin soon in various places around the Western world. Be on the lookout for the usual increase in hoax, attack, and other junk pages.

Our next newsletter might be announcing details of a possible election for co-ordinators of NPR. If you think you have what it takes to micro manage NPR, take a look at New Page Review Coordinators - it's a job that requires a lot of time and dedication.

WikiProject Dogs[edit]

Hi, Emir - will you help us at WP:WikiProject Dogs? We need editors who are familiar with GNG, N and V. For example, some of the information in our dog articles have been cited to sources like this one. I've also seen references to the Animal Research Foundation which began as a privately owned registry for a handful of unrecognized dog breeds, and ended up creating problems that caused its demise. We have had issues because it is natural for people to love their dog which makes them more susceptible than normal to scams & money-making schemes, and we need editors who can recognize when that is happening vs reliable sources with verifiable information. Please say "yes". Atsme Talk 📧 14:32, 23 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Review newsletter September-October 2019[edit]

Hello Emir of Wikipedia,

Backlog

Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Coordinator

A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.

This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

New Page Review newsletter November 2019[edit]

Hello Emir of Wikipedia,

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 818 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.
Want to join? Consider adding the NPP Pledge userbox.
Our next newsletter will announce the winners of some really cool awards.

Coordinator

Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.

This month's refresher course

Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.

Tools
  • It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
  • It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
Reviewer Feedback

Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.

Second set of eyes
  • Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
  • Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.

Community Wish list

There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.

ArbCom 2019 election voter message[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:20, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020[edit]

Hello Emir of Wikipedia,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources
Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

New Page Reviewer newsletter June 2020[edit]

Hello Emir of Wikipedia,

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Discussions and Resources
  • A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
  • Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
  • A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
  • Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

No no, I NEVER meant to "edit-war", this is a community. Welcoming late is not the issue, but what's the purpose of doing so when you know I am not a newbie/rookie editor?
More importantly, why are you specifically targetting Osman Ali khan page with the expectation to have citations for ALMOST-EVERY OTHER LINE.

Please read Wikipedia:Citing sources. I can help you learn more about Wikipedia if you want, don't want to discourage you. -- Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 16:53, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

P.G.[edit]

Actually, the year of birth that I put in the lede had the same source as the Infobox, but I was not aware of that. However, the Infobox was wrong. The source clearly states that her birth year was 1958, but not the month or date. Whatever editors added the source to the Infobox used the same source that I had, without me being aware of it, but their edit confused the issue. The cited NYT story said she was born in 1958, not "57/58." When I saw it I realized that an editor had removed the D.O.B. from the infobox and replaced it with the wrong info. So I got rid of the wrong info. I did an extremely diligent search for a source which had her birthday, found many, possibly as many as 10, that had June 14, 1958, but I did not believe that any passed the RSS standard. Some were probably copied from the old Wikipedia entry. I did find other reliable secondary sources mentioning her age, that made it clear that she was born in 1958, bracketed within month or two of June 14th, but did not give the birth date. I also found her listed with a different given name, "Oshry." that's a family name, used as a nickname, I'm guessing, rather than her legal name. I think the appropriate thing to do would be to move the citation to the lede, restore the birth year there, and leave the birth date blank. Then it will be accurate and true to the source, unless you or someone else can find a RSS for June 14th. I'm not going to revert your deletion but will leave straightening it out up to you. I've already spent far more time than I should have on this, trying to get accuracy, and won't spend any more as I'm extremely busy. A few years ago I found another NYC voter's DOB on their voting record, but I forget how I found it, and couldn't figure out how I'd managed to find that person's registration record before. Activist (talk) 12:08, 23 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. I even went to her Facebook page in the event friends had sent her birthday greetings in this or a prior year, but she gets a huge amount of messages and pursuing "June 14th" turned out to be quite a task and I was unsuccessful. Activist (talk) 12:12, 23 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

DC Extended Universe edits[edit]

Perhaps you may have missed where I removed a lot fo the BatPat movie stuff as DCEU or not, but I did so because there was a lot fo back and forth on it in the article when a consensus needed to be hashed out in talk. So I have removed your re-addition of the information I removed. Please stop adding it in. Use the talk page to make your case and seek a consensus for an agreed-upon version. Thanks in advance. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 03:37, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Improvements[edit]

Hi Emir, please can you have a look over this newly created page for any improvements if you have time? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Ezra_McCandless , thanks! KTflyer90 (talk) 06:29, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

KTflyer90, sorry I've not really had a chance to look at this until now. From what I can I don't think there should be an article for Ezra McCandless, but one for the event "murder of Alex Woodworth". I am not insulting you or accusing you of deliberately doing this with bad intentions, but it seems a bit like a page written to attack Ezra, instead of looking at the "murder of Alex Woodworth". I would also question the reliance of court TV as a reliable source in the article. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 16:45, 6 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks for your time! Much appreciated KTflyer90 (talk) 17:17, 6 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong result[edit]

Sorry to bother you, but I must have messed up in my request at WP:RM/TR. Before the move war, the article was placed at "Kuva-yi Milliye", not at "National Forces (historical Turkish militia)". I could, of course, move it back myself, but that could be interpreted as if I was taking sides in the move war, so I prefer not to do it myself. @Shopnobazbd: I have not deleted any page/picture yet. Can you please tell me what you are on about? Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 18:30, 10 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

hello Emir she is my cousin. a famous singer in bangladesh. i am helping her to make this wikipage. one modrerator from wikipage was asking me whether i was taking financial advantage from herm. NO- i am NOT taking any financial advantage from her or anybody.

'HitroMilanese' - another moderator from wikipedia was saying that this page is for promoting her.

as i said before, she is a famous singer in bangladesh. all her informations are available on internet in different medias. i just wanted to put all the info in a wikipage. so that people can get all the info from a single page or article.

that is what i am all about. i am new to wikipedia or wikipage. if i do any mistake or violate any of your rules without knowing them- sorry for that.

thank you so much for your time

Photo of Nasser bin Abdulaziz[edit]

You has reverted my edit on the page and said "who said?". I said because if you look at the photo you uploaded there is also Saad bin Abdul Rahman who died in 1915. So the person you used the photo of him cannot be Nasser bin Abdulaziz. Because in that year when the photograph was taken he could not be at this age. I also posted a similar message in the talk page of the photograph you uploaded, --Egeymi (talk) 18:27, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

references gone after "date formats per MOS:DATEFORMAT by script" on Fasting page[edit]

Hi Emir of Wikipedia,

just wanted to report that for some reason after this modification on Fasting:

18:34, 31 August 2020‎ Emir of Wikipedia talk contribs‎ m 103,653 bytes -1,473‎ date formats per MOS:DATEFORMAT by script

half of the page references were gone.

I cannot track this using the diff tool (???) but it's just that the previous and after modification version points to that direction.

Sorry if I'm wrong, just thought it was worth mentioning since the "script" tag :)

Hi, I was checking Wikipedia's [[7]] branching guidelines, which clearly says that the sub-organization should be notable enough as per guidelines. I think this sub-organization/article is good enough for notability guidelines. So, Request you to kindly revert the redirect to Punjabi University. See [[8]]

Hey! I was wondering if you could help out with this article because it seems that the subject of the article keeps reverting consensus edits in violation of WP:COI. This article is also up for deletion, so perhaps a speedy deletion is appropriate? I look forward to your help. Thank you so much!Dosafrog (talk) 21:02, 6 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Dosafrog, if they revert again then report to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring. I do not think it qualifies for speedy. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 21:04, 6 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion to remove redirect for Plex, Inc.[edit]

Hi - i wanted to propose removing the redirect from Plex, Inc. Plex, Inc. to Plex (Software) Plex (software), given that the company now has a number of products and there's no natural way to shoehorn the other products (free streaming TV network) into the software subscription service. As a newbie, I wanted to get your thoughts on this process and any advice and guidance. Thank you, any help is much appreciated. --JasonAjax (talk) 03:45, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello JasonAjax. Thank you for getting in touch with me, and for declaring that you work at Plex. If you post at Wikipedia:Teahouse, you will hopefully get advice from someone willing to help you turn Plex, Inc. into a proper article. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 14:55, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there!

I saw that you reverted my edit when I removed a section of an incorrectly referred to verse on the page. You asked what was factually incorrect about it in your revert, and I thought I'd let you know that I wrote about it on the talk page!

Thanks,

"Outgoing" and all in Infoboxes[edit]

Emir: I know you're rather busy, but I was wondering about the use of "Outgoing" wikilinking back to "Lame duck", in infoboxes. As I recall, that isn't in the template documentation, is it? (This is, admittedly, a roundabout way for me to ask if you'd look over the infobox for Mike Pence.) Thank you! Javert2113 (Siarad.|¤) 16:56, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

1RR vio[edit]

Both of these edits are reverts, meaning you have exceeded 1RR. Please fix. I have already explained in an editsum why a cite is not needed for the last sentence in the lead; if you disagree with that reasoning please open a discussion. ―Mandruss  17:22, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mandruss, can you double check your links please? One is not an edit, and I do not get what you mean by the other one. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 17:24, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Second link fixed, sorry. I don't get why you don't get what I mean by the other one. Do you dispute that it was a revert? ―Mandruss  17:26, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Can you revert the edits you think are wrong and I will explain why I think they should be included on the talkpage. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 17:28, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No, because then I would violate 1RR. If you would remove the cn that you added to the last sentence of the lead, I would consider the problem fixed as far as 1RR goes. I would still oppose the other cn's in the lead for the reason I gave in the editsum, but that would be separate from the process issue, and per 1RR I can't revert them (yet). ―Mandruss  17:32, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There is no cn tag on the last sentence of the lead. Have removed the other one though. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 17:34, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Do you consider the possible 1RR problem resolved now? No comment on the article or other editors action please, just the issue you had with me. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 17:39, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, thanks. ―Mandruss  17:43, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Patrol December Newsletter[edit]

Hello Emir of Wikipedia,

A chart of the 2020 New Page Patrol Queue

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Rank Username Num reviews Log

10 Utopes (talk) 3,958 Patrol Page Curation
Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

Request[edit]

Hi, could you please involve in the discussions about moving the articles about Saudi royals, there are just two editors, they initiated a discussion and without informing the related authors they began to move these articles deleting the family name "Al Saud". It is very interesting that one of these editors is using just IP. for instance, you may look at the talk page of Hathloul bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. --Egeymi (talk) 15:53, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nationality of David Dobrik[edit]

Hello,

this is pretty straight forward. He is a Slovak immigrant protected under the DACA program due to his parents entering the U.S. illegally when he was a child. This is stated and sufficiently cited under the Personal life section. Many editors seem to think that him living in the U.S. makes him an American national, which it does not. Nothing really there to discuss, it is just plain false. <!-- Do not add American --> should be re-added. Throast (talk) 17:48, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, I just saw that you didn't remove the text. But I still think that the discuss-tag is redundant. Throast (talk) 17:54, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Throast, can you please add your views to Talk:David_Dobrik#Nationality_description. I will not remove the discuss tag and/or add American until there is consensus to. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 19:03, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
My point is that there are no grounds to start a discussion on this specific topic. This dispute stems from editors being confused about what "nationality" means. Dobrik's nationality is not disputed and therefor not up for discussion. But I guess I will play along. Throast (talk) 19:17, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your point of view, but you need to explain that on the article talkpage not on my talkpage. Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 18:25, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Hi, Emir - are you satisfied with the non-admin closures of RealClear Media and The Federalist? Atsme 💬 📧 23:11, 17 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Atsme - I think the RealClear Media one is kind of a cop-out, especially with the close only being made a couple of days after the most recent comment on it, but the close does reflect the discussion. The other one however might need a WP:CLOSECHALLENGE. -- Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 15:24, 18 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I'm not a fan of RealClear anything so, but I am of the mind that The Federalist RfC iVotes demonstrated a pretty obvious partisan divide. Happy editing! Atsme 💬 📧 15:49, 18 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Help with Playground Global request?[edit]

Hi. I recently posted an edit request on the Playground Global talk page. I know they've had undisclosed conflict of interest issues in the past, and I'm working internally to ensure that everything is above board now. Please have a look![edit]

I will request you to see this. Talk:Ismail ibn Musa Menk#Is he following Hanbali or Hanafi? Trap133 (talk) 08:31, 15 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You insisted that linking Rainbow Six in Without Remorse (film) was WP:EGG and repeatedly forced your preferred version of the page.

I disagreed with your assessment (that's not an egg that's simply disambiguation) and also your verbose attempts to resolve it, so I brought it to the talk page but you did not discuss. You eventually added a Footnote instead after I repeatedly asked you to do so in edit summaries. It was a reasonable compromise that seemed to satisfy your concerns without messing up the plot section.

Another editor is insisting that the footnote is not necessary, and pushing a simple link in the text like it was before.

If you don't WP:DISCUSS on the Talk page and show there is consensus for a Footnote then I'm not going to continue to make any further attempts to maintain the compromise. -- 109.79.175.162 (talk) 12:27, 15 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021[edit]

New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello Emir of Wikipedia,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

Hello! I came across you from the WikiProject:Saudi Arabia and thought you might be able to help. This article seems like it is not being kept up to date and doesn't have very many appropriate sources. However, it seems like it might be important either as a stand-alone page or to add the content to the Islamic Banking page. Since I am not familiar with the subject I wanted to seek out the opinion of someone who might know more. If there is a more appropriate place to post this page for review, please let me know! Thank you for checking it out. FiddleheadLady (talk) 15:25, 19 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft article, Draft:Stealth sequel[edit]

Hello, Emir of Wikipedia. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Stealth sequel".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been deleted. If you plan on working on it further and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Hi Emir of Wikipedia,

You have undone most of my edits without a proper explanation.

90% of what I've done is removed repetition of content and duplication of citations; inspite of which my edits have been reverted.

Do we have so much space on wikipedia to be wasted?

Syed Ali[edit]

Hi, Emir. I saw your merge proposal on Talk:Syed (from 5 years ago mind you lol) and wondered what your thoughts on Syed Ali (name) are? The content has drifted to being about 'Syed' and POV nonsense. Some old revisions were a bit more focused. No sources since 2008 has me smiling. Do you know if it's as common a name as it says or are we looking at merge material for somewhere? Zindor (talk) 04:07, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022[edit]

New Page Review queue March 2022

Hello Emir of Wikipedia,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 818 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 860 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022[edit]

New Page Review queue June 2022

Hello Emir of Wikipedia,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

Backlog drive

A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

Misc

There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:

Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 14283 articles, as of 12:00, 19 April 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
  • To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
Notes
  1. ^ not including another ~6,000 redirects
  2. ^ The number of weekly reviews reported in the NPP feed includes redirects, which are not included in the backlog we primarily track.

New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022[edit]

New Page Review queue August 2022

Hello Emir of Wikipedia,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.

New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022[edit]

Hello Emir of Wikipedia,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
  • If you're interested in instant messaging and chat rooms, please join us on the New Page Patrol Discord, where you can ask for help and live chat with other patrollers.
  • Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.

New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023[edit]

Hello Emir of Wikipedia,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
  • There is live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
  • Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
  • If you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023[edit]

Hello Emir of Wikipedia,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

November Articles for creation backlog drive[edit]

Hello Emir of Wikipedia:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 2400 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024[edit]

Hello Emir of Wikipedia,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.
