JSTOR in citation

I'm adding JSTOR to an existing citation using VisualEditor. After clicking the citation number, the citation icon, Edit, Change reference type and entering the JSTOR URL and Insert I entered the relevant details in each field of the template including registration in the URL access level. Checking at various stages everything is OK until I add the word free in the JSTOR access level box, according to "If the full text is free to read on JSTOR, type 'free'". That leads to " cite journal: Empty citation (help): |jstor-access= requires |jstor=" after "via JSTOR.".

I wondered if ticking JSTOR in the list would help but since I'm not sure what to enter in the resulting JSTOR identifier field it doesn't. Why does entering free result in the error notice? Apart from ignoring the field (which I have so far) what could I do? What is supposed to be entered in the ID field? Mcljlm (talk) 01:28, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Mcljlm: Instead of using:
  •
  • Douglas, D. C. (October 1942). "Rollo of Normandy". The English Historical Review. 57 (228): 422. ISSN 0013-8266. Retrieved 15 May 2023 – via JSTOR.
I recommend the simpler:
  •
  • Douglas, D. C. (October 1942). "Rollo of Normandy". The English Historical Review. 57 (228): 422. ISSN 0013-8266. JSTOR 554369.
Hope this helps! GoingBatty (talk) 02:32, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Mcljlm. The visual editor is bug ridden and lacks full functionality. I suggest that you use the fully functional desktop editor, which despite its misleading name, works just fine on mobile devices as well, if you are prepared to do some scrolling in and out. I know that is true because I have been using it almost every day for over ten years. Cullen328 (talk) 08:51, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I only edit on my desktop. I don't often read articles from any source on my phone. Mcljlm (talk) 11:41, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The 2nd version GoingBatty doesn't indicate how users can access the article. How can the article link be made obvious?
What's the JSTOR identifier field intended for? Mcljlm (talk) 01:36, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Mcljlm: Click on the "554369" link to access the article. Maybe even scrap the issn value, since there's a wikilink to the journal. GoingBatty (talk) 01:24, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks GoingBatty. I've followed you ISSN suggestion and at the moment everything appears OK. Do WP users interested in reading cited articles realise the article link is the number following JSTOR? Mcljlm (talk) 22:31, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Mcljlm: I hope so, but it's probably less obvious than the article title being linked. GoingBatty (talk) 01:01, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question about administration

Hello, I'm mint tin 5506 and I was wondering what is the process to becoming an administrator. Mint tin 5506 (talk) 14:42, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Mint tin 5506 see WP:ADMIN. You have a clear lack of experience to become an administrator. Usually, tens of thousands of edits in all areas of Wikipedia and a clear need for the admin tools are what is necessary. Don't be a hat collector. Sungodtemple (talk • contribs) 15:01, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I said I was just wondering. You don't have to answer so harshly. Mint tin 5506 (talk) 18:46, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Mint tin 5506, it's fine to wonder. Valereee (talk) 18:53, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Find some areas of interest. For me, I found myself participating a lot in Wikipedia:Third opinion and gaining skills in dispute resolution. Years later, I believe this was one factor in the community accepting me as an administrator. Creating good content is always a plus, as is working in areas that maintain stability of the project, like combatting vandalism and participating in WP:AFD. ~Anachronist (talk) 18:56, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Process is to either nominate yourself at RfA or have another editor perform this rite on your behalf. Much experience is expected in this case, so you have a lot of work to do. Generally good behaviour and a hard-working attitude are also desired. People on power trips are generally not accepted, so some desire to genuinely help and maintain the Wiki are pretty much mandatory. Pablothepenguin (talk) 16:56, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

At exactly what point does information belong to a Fandom site rather than a Wikipedia article?

@TrademarkedTarantula: Welcome to the Teahouse! Are you thinking of one of the 1,725 articles tagged with the Fan POV template? GoingBatty (talk) 04:05, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Helloheart, here is the exact article I've been talking about. The tag is in the League of Legends section. And yes, that's correct. I didn't know it was called Fan POV. TrademarkedTarantula (talk) 04:10, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
TrademarkedTarantula, it is not usually considered to be the responsibility of a Wikipedia editor to transfer content over to Fandom. That's a commercial website with no affiliation with Wikipedia except that it runs on MediaWiki software and Jimmy Wales is involved with both sites. Fandom has vastly different inclusion standards. Of course, some Wikipedia editors are active on both sites. As for Fnatic, I lack expertise in this topic area, but the coverage comes off to me as excessively and almost obsessively detailed for a neutral encyclopedia article, but that requires editorial judgment by an experienced editor more familiar than I with the topic and the sources. Cullen328 (talk) 06:50, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As always, it comes down to sourcing. If a reliable independent sources says something, then it can appear in an article. (That is a minimum requirement: not everything in a reliable source will be considered encyclopaedic). If it doesn't appear in such a source, it shouldn't usually be in an article.
Material that might be considered "from a fan point of view" usually doesn't appear in independent reliable sources, and so should be added to a Wikipedia article. If it does appear, it is probably a reviewer's personal opinion, and it may be OK to quote in a Wikipedia article, as "John Doe wrote in XYZ Post that '...'". If you agree (as I do) that editing with Chrome on a smartphone is much easier when it's in desktop mode, you can add the line
mw.loader.load("https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:%C3%9Ejarkur/NeverUseMobileVersion.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript");
to User:Onion1981/common.js . That way, you won't need to invoke desktop mode every time you visit Wikipedia, it'll do it for you. Maproom (talk) 07:47, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Antonio, and welcome to the Teahouse. You need to find several sources, each of which meets the golden rule: that is, several people, who have no connection at all to the artist, must have written about him and been published in reliable sources.
It is very likely that it is WP:TOOSOON for an article on this artist to appear in Wikipedia.
Also, I must ask, given your name: are you The Antogonist? If so, then please be aware that writing about yourself is very strongly discouraged in Wikipedia. ColinFine (talk) 10:02, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to update author name in reference list

So I noticed recently my name was referenced as a source for a Wikipedia page which I thought was odd. I clicked on the page and the article, but it's for anything I've written. The rightful author and citation needs to be for Mariam Elatouabi.

Here's the page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morocco%E2%80%93Saudi_Arabia_relations

Can anyone help with making this edit? I tried doing it myself but I've never edited a page before and the reference list is in a template and can only be edited in source code.

Wikipedia page assistance

I am writing a page for my senior. He is a professional cricketer. I have followed all the guidelines and have seen a lot of Wikipedia pages for reference. Still it got declined. I have added inline as well as external references. Can someone please help me with verification? Advm pb (talk) 18:24, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Advm pb: Welcome to the Teahouse. It appears you have not followed all the guidelines:
  • Your statement that you are writing a page for your senior leads me to think you have a conflict of interest, which you would have to declare on your user page
  • You are using tables instead of Infobox cricketer
  • In the "Playing Career" section, the first two sentences are unreferenced.
  • Some sentences do not have a neutral point of view, such as "one of the most reputed clubs", "giving him a platform to perform and adhere to his skills", and "He trains young cricketers to excel in their cricket skills and improve their overall performance."
  • In the "Coaching Careers" section, you are using an external link instead of a reference.
  • You are incorrectly bolding the section headings.
...and that's without evaluating whether the references are independent reliable sources that provide significant coverage of the cricketer. Hope this helps! GoingBatty (talk) 18:39, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. I have made the changes and published it. Can you please check and let me know what changes i could make? Advm pb (talk) 19:00, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Advm, and welcome to the Teahouse. I'm afraid that, like most new editors trying the challenging task of creating an article, you have approached it backwards - you have started writing without first finding satisfactory sources. This is like building a house without surveying the ground or checking local building regulations.
Not one of your sources meets the triple requirement of being reliably published, independent of Bhoir, and containing significant coverage of him. (Most do not contain significant coverage, and those that do are based on interviews, and so not independent).
Unless and until you find several sources that meet the golden rule, you cannot establish that Bhoir meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, and all time and effort you spend on the draft - up to now or subsequently - will be time wasted. ColinFine (talk) 19:15, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am writing this page for a professional cricketer. My draft was declined earlier and now I have made some changes and made it better from verification point of view. Hi, and welcome back to the Teahouse, Advm pb. I see that you've resubmitted the draft, but – sorry – it really isn't ready. You need maybe three independent, reliable, secondary sources that cover the subject (the cricketer) in depth, and what you write in the article should reflect what the sources actually say, not want you want to say. Anything else is just making cosmetic changes. Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 20:11, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Advm pb: Please do not delete conversations here. They will be automatically archived a few days after the conversation has completed. GoingBatty (talk) 20:22, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Advm pb There's one more thing that both you and your "senior" (I guess that's a cricket term that we Yanks would never understand) should know. If you do manage to write something that will pass muster here, it will not be a "page for" your senior or anybody else. It will be an article here in this encyclopedia. And virtually anybody in the world will be free to come in and edit that article. And if those edits are relevant and well supported by reliable sources, those edits will stay--whether you or your "senior" like them or not. Uporządnicki (talk) 21:01, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The preview is a direct rip from the first few sentences of the page. This is also what google does if you look up something without a preset information box made by google to show. Filtering out all caps versions of words in search

Hi! I'm quite new to Wikipedia, and have been going through instances of mistakes like "the its", but have found a number of instances of "the ITS" and similar things. Is there any way I can use the search bar to filter those out, or is that just a part of the system? Thanks!

Aiue (talk) 21:52, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Aiue, welcome to the Teaghouse. A normal search is always case insensitive. Help:Searching#insource: with regexp is case sensitive but slow. For efficiency reasons you should first do a normal search and then filter out the unwanted results: "the its" -insource:/the ITS/. Insource doesn't filter out results with markup in the string like the ITS. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:32, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Translated page in personal namespace

Hi,

I started translating the page of Max Mathews from the english wikipedia to the italian one, but I published it by mistake in my personal namespace instead of the main italian wikipedia. Is there a way to move the page from my user namespace to the main wikipedia? Or should I start the translation again? Thanks ~~~~ Seianus (talk) 07:38, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Seianus, your creation it:Utente:Seianus/Max Mathews is only one (1) sentence long. And the sentence is short and simple. It's not as long as your question about it above. (i) Copy it. (ii) Paste it. (iii) Citing reliable sources, augment it. (iv) Publish it. And if you have any questions about it, ask at it:Wikipedia. -- Hoary (talk) 07:48, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, yes, I know. I just started the translation and published it by mistake (on my namespace). My initial intention was to save it as a draft. I was just wondering if there is a standard procedure to move pages from user namespace to the main wiki. Thanks. -- Seianus (talk) 09:08, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Seianus, it's likely that you can simply move it; however, it's also possible that you haven't made enough edits to be allowed to do this. The rules about this kind of thing at it:WP may differ from those here. -- Hoary (talk) 09:21, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Calc Great Circle Distance

Is there an easy way of calculating the great circle distance between two places, given their co-ordinates, such as ..

296 km between Jeddah and Port Sudan

  • The rail map of Sudan is truncated so that the scale is missing.

957 km between Khartoum and Port Sudan

  • The rail map of Sudan is truncated so that the scale is missing.

MountVic127 (talk) 08:02, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The answer is wanted in km, though other units of measurements may be specified.

MountVic127, welcome to the "teahouse", where people ask questions about using Wikipedia. Your question seems to belong to one or other of Wikipedia's "reference desks". -- Hoary (talk) 08:43, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@MountVic127 Is Great circle distance of any use? Mike Turnbull (talk) 10:14, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Your advice regarding Great Circle Distance, combined with DecDeg, have allowed me to get two distance which look about right. Unfortunately the Map of Sudan is truncated so that no scale is visible. All I need now is a map with a scale.
Thank you very much. :-) :-) ----MountVic127 (talk) 21:32, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request to create a page for Raina Huang

Hi. I would like to create a new page for Raina Huang, a page that was first deleted on June 2011 by , a user whose account was blocked due to having abusively used multiple accounts. I found sources that I think are reliable. Here are the links for your reference:

Please let me know if I can create them directly with these sources. I just don't want to create and then get deleted after a few days. Thank you. Bmjc98 (talk) 10:11, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the sources are reliable, with significant coverage. However, is Huang notable? Are they just Famous for being famous? Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 10:34, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Esowteric, doesn't fame for being famous count? En:WP has articles on Paris Hilton, Brooklyn Beckham, Melania Trump, miscellaneous Kardashians, etc; none of whom seem to have much notability as the word is normally (i.e. outside WP) understood. -- Hoary (talk) 11:17, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, Hoary. I was wondering into which category folk like Huang (or social media influencers, vloggers; etc) would fall. WP:ENTERTAINER, which seems to set a higher bar? Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 11:26, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your reply and the NY Daily News archived link, @Esowteric. Much appreciated. As for notability, to be honest, from my own understanding, as long as the subject has significant coverage on at least three reliable sources, that subject is deemed notable enough. Correct me if I'm wrong, though. But personally, I think she's notable in her field for being a competitive eater, knowing she has won numerous eating competitions since she started. Notability of an actress, criteria

Dear all, today I would like to dive into the criteria for notability of an actress in order to qualify for a Wikipedia article. This is explained in 4 .

There, two groups of criteria are mentioned, I quote: the actress...

"1. Has had significant roles in multiple notable films, television shows, stage performances, or other productions; or

2. Has made unique, prolific or innovative contributions to a field of entertainment. (Previously #3)"

I understand the "or" between #1 and #2 so that these two groups are valid alternatively and also in the same time, but not exclusively as in "either... or ..."

I am struggling with the following topics:

a) what is a significant role? There is no further link explaining this. Differently asked, how do I recognize a significant role when I see it? Is the actress' name mentioned at the start of the movie? Is it mentioned in the first ten positions of the final credits?

b) what is a notable film? Here I see a link to an article about a film's notability, I leave it for today.

c) how is it possible to decide/assess whether a contribution to a field of entertainment is "unique, prolific or innovative" ? What is a contribution to a field of entertainment anyway?

d) how is the word "multiple" used here? More than one? More than five? If there is a meaning to the word, why not write it explicitly? The criterion then becomes measurable.

For a) I would love to have at least one measurable criterion: this is a significant role, this is no significant role, because it has or has not surpassed criteria ....

For c) I would appreciate a, possibly non-exhaustive, list of examples for "unique, prolific or innovative contributions to a field of entertainment"

Thanks in advance for your kind and patient answers.

If there is already an article or answer to these questions, I appreciate a link to it.

I also need to add that I am not a native speaker of English language, so I am not sure about the meaning of some words in the way they are used here. I guess, though, that there are different usages of words for native English speakers from the USA, England, Ireland, India, Australia or where else there are native speakers of the English language.

Best regards! Bernhard.rulla (talk) 11:48, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Restored this one of two duplicated questions (both of which had been deleted), as advised in the thread above. Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 13:03, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Bernhard.rulla Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. "Multiple" means more than one. A "significant" role in my opinion is something more than a mere appearance or one spoken line, but the meaning can vary. There isn't always a specific definition. What does matter is if independent reliable sources consider a role to be significant. The same goes for a "unique" contribution to entertainment, what matters is what sources say. I gather you want to write about a particular actress, or may even be that actress. Are there sources that describe this person as being significant to entertainment? 331dot (talk) 13:23, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@331dot Thank you very much for your reply. I will think about it. Bernhard.rulla (talk) 11:55, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bernhard.rulla: Welcome to the Teahouse! I can empathize with your questions, as black and white thinkers like myself sometimes struggle with ambiguous guidelines like this. Every page on Wikipedia (whether it's an article or a page about Wikipedia like Wikipedia:Notability (people)) can have an associated talk page, which is the best place for deep dive questions like you're asking here. In this case, the page is Wikipedia talk:Notability (people). You can also search the archives of the talk page to see if your questions have been previously discussed. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 15:18, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There's still some cleaning up required on this article, but I have made a start on it.

help on Luigi Pane Wikipedia page

Hello, I have some layout issues on this page:

Luigi Pane

Can you please help me to understand how to solve to? It seems to have different issues on the general layout. Bibi Andersson (talk) 16:12, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Bibi Andersson, welcome to the Teahouse. I would recommend that you look at a Good or Featured Article on a similar subject - for instance, Wong Kar-wai. Look at the section titles and how they are arranged, then follow that example in the article you're concerned about. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 16:22, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Just to note that the tag was added in January 2016 when the article looked even much more "different". Old revision of Luigi Pane. Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 16:26, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It wouldn't take many more edits to ditch the old "reorganisation" tag. You could add an infobox (which may require you shuffling the images), and the references would be better using full citations (I see that two need verifying). Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 16:47, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bibi Andersson, you have uploaded several photos of this person as "own work". How are you getting these photos? If you have a personal or professional connection to the subject of the article, please review WP:COI and WP:PAID. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 16:27, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the note. I get the pictures from a friend of a friend of a friend of mine who had the opportunity to work for a production house that worked with L. Pane. As he told me he shot some backstage pictures of Pane during the years I asked him if I could use some of them, explaining him my will to contribute to the bio of this director. He kindly gave me the pictures, authorising me to use them the way I wanted. I published the pictures as my own work just because he told me "just go with it". I think he probably told me to do it in this way just to make the process easy (at least this is the feeling I got). Bibi Andersson (talk) 17:13, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bibi Andersson, that is not how copyright works, unfortunately. You did not take the pictures; they are not your own work and you are not authorized to release them for our use. If you friend wants to authorize their use, they need to email Wikimedia Commons. They can use the release generator here. As it stands, all the images are copyright violations and should be deleted. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 17:23, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've talked to the person who shot the pictures about the issue. I'm totally authorized by the creator. He just doesn't want to appear as the author of the pictures and we should respect his will. I'm copying and pasting what he reported to me: "Please try to understand my point. I'm a well known professional photographer and I prefer to not see my name associated with those snapshots since my professional work is known for a very peculiar style of pictures. Since the objective is purely documenting the work of a director I esteem, you can freely use the pictures with no restrictions. If my will is against the Wikipedia copyright rules please write "unknown" under the author's name. Sincerely M.".
Nobody here wants to break any copyright rules, our objective is just to contribute to benefit readers by making available information on a branch of knowledge. On the other side, I just want to respect the will of a photographer who kindly authorised me to publish those pictures. Thank you for understanding and cooperating. Bibi Andersson (talk) 21:09, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Bibi. The problem is that you saying "he authorised me" is not enough for Wikipedia's (and Wikimedia Commons') rules on copyright. This is partly because part of the mission of Wikimedia is to make material freely available for reuse, so it generally requires that the copyright holder doesn't just authorise use of the material on Wikipedia, but releases it under a copyleft licence so that anybody can reuse it for any purpose, commercial or not: we would need to be sure that the photographer understands that and agreed.
While release is often done publicly (by a notice on a website, for example) it can be done privately, by the copyright owner sending a suitable email to a particular address: it will be seen only by members of the team that handle that address. See WP:donating copyright materials for the details. ColinFine (talk) 22:51, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bibi Andersson, I'm not doubting what you say, but if you stop and think for a moment, you'll realize that we can't just take the word of someone who makes a Wikipedia account (which is free and easy to do), then says, "The copyright holder has absolutely given me permission to use these!" There are legal issues involved, so there needs to be a formal process. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 14:35, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bibi Andersson, please don't remove "Citation needed" or other tags from Luigi Pane until the issues have been addressed. Thanks. Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 18:58, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Help on creating a page.

Hello fellow Wikipedians!

I have made a couple of pages, but none of real people.

I recently discovered that on the page of Igor Pavlov, the programmer does not have a page.

I was wondering if there is any tips or articles I should read for creating pages for living people.

Thanks!

- vlad670 Talk Vlad670 (talk) 17:54, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

One more thing, if you search IIgor Pavlov (programmer), it redirects to his most popular software.
That redirect should be gone when the new article is created. Vlad670 (talk) 17:57, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
WP:BLP (and perhaps WP:BIO) may help you. The Manual of Style (specifically MOS:BIO) is useful in this respect. ContributeToTheWiki (talk) 18:01, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Vlad670: Welcome to the Teahouse! I suggest you gather multiple independent reliable sources that have provided significant coverage of Pavlov himself (not just his software), and determine whether he meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". If so, you could follow the instructions at Help:Your first article, and be prepared for a process that could include waiting for review, rejections, and rewrites before an article is created. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 18:44, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

January 6, 2021 Capital Attack

Can you please amend your language that states a mob of Trump supporters attacked the capitol? It has been reported that the FBI was involved and I can see from my own eyes that hundreds of thousands of people attended the speech and went to the capitol but did not enter the building nor did they attack anyone. If you want to say a mob attacked the capitol, that is fine. There is not substantial evidence that many Trump supporters entered the building. More over it appears that members of antifa were involved. Please correct your article. Thanks 2600:6C58:597F:FF91:A86E:E24A:A5C3:A3FB (talk) 18:04, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, IP editor and welcome to the Teahouse. All significant facts in that article are hopefully backed-up by at least one reliable source, and there have been many convictions in court that back up the "mainstream" story. Perhaps you could also read United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack? Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 18:10, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Welcome to the Teahouse! Every Wikipedia article (e.g. January 6 United States Capitol attack) has an associated talk page (e.g. Talk:January 6 United States Capitol attack) where editors can discuss how to improve the article. I don't believe the article says everyone that attended the speech entered the building or attacked anyone. You're welcome to start a constructive conversation on the talk page, especially if you have specific suggestions (e.g. replace this sentence with that sentence) that are supported by reliable sources. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 18:41, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Another relevant article is Criminal proceedings in the January 6 United States Capitol attack. There is overwhelming evidence that the vast majority of the rioters were Trump supporters, and no evidence of significant antifa involvement. Cullen328 (talk) 20:02, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The IP editor made a similar comment on the article talk page, and the comment was summarily removed per WP:NOTAFORUM. No reliable sources were cited above, just hearsay from a right-wing echo chamber, and no sources were cited in the article talk page comment. If we advise a person to suggest a change on an article talk page, we should strongly emphasize that it's mandatory to include reliable sources. Otherwise it's considered nothing more than a drive-by complaint by someone not interested in building an encyclopedia, and it is removed. ~Anachronist (talk) 05:20, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Do you meet the notability guidelines at WP:N? It looks like your sandbox (and user) page relies heavily on your own (self-published) website (which is discouraged per WP:RSSELF), and Facebook. These 'references' would need to be removed before the article could be published. ContributeToTheWiki (talk) 19:58, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I will delete it. Can you help me edit the article? MuhammadSyria (talk) 20:00, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@MuhammadSyria: Hi there! WP:AUTO explains that Wikipedia strongly discourages autobiographies. Creating a new Wikipedia article can be challenging, especially when you have a conflict of interest (COI). To learn how to edit, I suggest you start at Help:Introduction. I suggest spending a significant amount of time editing existing articles to hone your skills. When you're ready to create an article, you would gather multiple published independent (i.e. not written by you) reliable sources that have provided significant coverage of you, and determine whether they demonstrate that you meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". If so, you could create an account and declare your COI on your user page. Then follow the instructions at Help:Your first article and summarize what the independent sources state, and be prepared for a process that may include months of waiting for review, rejections, and rewrites, before an article is created. If you are successful, then you could never edit the article directly due to your COI, but could submit edit requests on the article talk page. Hope this helps. Is an interview with a person for their biography a reliable source, and would it be considered original research?

A Relative named David Been asked me to create a Wikipedia page on him. He was a 2 star general in the USAF. there are few articles on him and a small bio on the site AF.mil (linked below) I was thinking of interviewing him, as for a biography its probably most accurate if the person the bio is about is talking. Anyway I am very new to editing wikipedia but have been a longtime user. Any help is appreciated! https://www.af.mil/About-Us/Biographies/Display/Article/108867/david-b-been/ Xorbeez (talk) 20:07, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. An interview would be a primary source and can't be used to establish notability. Wikipedia primarily wants to know what others unaffiliated with him say about him. As you surmised, it would also be original research. Furthermore you would have a conflict of interest with regards to your uncle.
If there are few independent reliable sources about him, he likely would not merit an article(the preferred term, not the broader "page") at this time. 331dot (talk) 20:17, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Hi @Xorbeez! Thanks for those questions.
First off, article creation is one of the more difficult tasks on Wikipedia. Guidance is at Help:Your first article, but you may find it easier to dip your toes in doing other tasks first.
Second, since you are writing about a relative you know, you have a conflict of interest, so you'll need to read the guidance there and abide by the disclosure rules.
Now, to get to the question you asked, as 331dot mentioned above, an interview would be a primary source, and Wikipedia really prefers secondary sources when possible. Interviewing him and publishing it online somewhere could be a helpful thing to do (especially if you tag it with an open license, like this one), and the information from it could make its way into secondary sources over time, but it's not what we would want to primarily base an article off of.

is someone saying "those weebs at wikipedia can use my [insert content here] for their pages, don't worry about that law thing lmao" on their website or wherever it can stay recorded for all the ever enough to actually allow said content in commons, or does that actually require formal permission-granting, the unlicense or whatever else? cogsan (give me attention) (my deeds) 20:33, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Article that covers multiple subjects

I am trying to update the article for Richmond CenterStage but have hit a road block. The article is described as a performing arts center but actually discusses several subjects: a performing arts nonprofit (formerly called Richmond CenterStage Foundation but renamed to the Richmond Performing Arts Alliance in 2017), an arts center made of two joined historic buildings (previously called the Richmond CenterStage complex, it is primarily referred to in the article as the Carpenter Center and was renamed to the Dominon Energy Center in 2009), and a third historic building owned by the same nonprofit but in a different location (in other words, not part of the same building complex).

While the historic buildings pass a check for WP:NBUILD (and one has its own separate article already), I'm not sure if the nonprofit passes WP:ORG. If the nonprofit does pass, I believe the page should be renamed to match the organization's current name and reclassified from a theater to a nonprofit. If the nonprofit is not notable enough, I believe the article should focus on what is now named the Dominion Energy Center, renaming the article and removing content solely about the organization and other building that it owns. I do not know how onerous renaming and reclassifying is, but I'm willing to give it a shot. I'd greatly appreciate perspectives from anyone who has dealt with an article like this that isn't specifically about one thing.

Vegantics (talk) 20:47, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Vegantics skimming the article, it seems like a WP:SPLIT is not necessary. The section about the nonprofit is way too long in comparison with the rest of the article. However, it is mostly WP:PROMO which can take a lot of space. Begin by trimming the unreferenced puffery, and then reevaluate.
The whole section seems to have been created by four separate editors in 2012/2013, maybe a paid editing ring, maybe WP:COI, maybe just paraphrasing content on the website, who knows. Sungodtemple (talk • contribs) 01:17, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Vegantics: @Sungodtemple: I've seen YouTube videos on "how to promote my business/nonprofit/B&B/whatever on Wikipedia" that recommend "write about the historic building" as a way to establish notability of the topic, and then add stuff about the non-notable entity occupying that building - with the obligatory external link, of course. It's a way to sneak promotion into Wikipedia. Editors have been blocked for doing this. The article should be about one notable subject. It's OK to mention who occupies the building but not OK to give them free SEO links. ~Anachronist (talk) 05:12, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Working on debugging Stanley Kubrick's relations with regards to 'World Assembly of Youth' - may not be actual director

Hello,

I'm working on a bit of a controversial piece with regards to Stanley Kubrick and the elusive "world Assembly of Youth" film, ps the footage has been found. I've started editing the parts I know, but there's going to be a bit of a shocker - because the footage was found, we now know it was produced under the "News of the Day" group, but New of the Day should be de func by 1952.

Now how Stanley Kubrick is involved in this I and other historian's are still not sure. I've literally combed the National Archives(to quote the movie the movie SpaceBalls, "we ain't found ****"), in which not only was Stanley Kubrick not an employee of the Department of State, but other than one document that specifically states anything regarding this film's association with the Department of State wasn't really supposed to be known, nothing is really known about how the film was produced. So here comes this odd inconsistency where one of Stanley Kubrick's resume's states "World Assembly of Youth". Oh, and that he did it for the State Department. Which no one was supposed to know, but fi, he told everyone regardless.

For a documentary film, should one provide a synopsis breaking down the scenes? I figure then set up a header with regards to "Questions of Stanley Kubrick's involvement"?

Also, I have a bunch of pdf's from the national archive with regards to this, and other information from the Roosevelt museum that fill in the gaps of what the "way" meeting actually was intended for - it was a youth meeting to create a consensus on a draft UN bill for Universal Human Rights. So really, the WAY meeting was massively influential on not just the US but the world as a whole, yet has become seemingly forgotten nearly entirely.

thanks for y'alls time -Nick NicholasMorrish (talk) 20:58, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

NicholasMorrish, you appear to be discussing the article World Assembly of Youth (film). This is referenced very sparsely: it cites three sources, and cites each of the three just once. One of the three appears to be a minimal announcement in a decades-old newspaper; I haven't looked at this. Another starts "This blog post is a reflection on the process of archival research I conducted for my book Stanley Kubrick Produces." This is not encouraging; but, since it's not published in the writer's own blog, it might be usable. The third is "If you believe they put a man on the Moon; A Fiction-Meets-Fact Story about Stanley Kubrick’s involvement with the Department Of State", by Nicholas Morrish: a long, richly illustrated and possibly [I don't know; I haven't even started to read it] piece available via Google Docs, which starts: "This is the strange tale about investigating whether or not it was possible that world renowned director Stanley Kubrick had been involved with the 1352nd Motion Picture Squadron. Since then, it’s morphed into something of a chronicle of events focusing on Kubrick’s involvement with the Department of State during 1952." Well, let it keep morphing, until it reaches a state where it's submitted to, accepted by, and put out by a publisher that will have subjected it to editorial oversight. Until that happens, it's unusable. As for the assertion that something or other "was massively influential on [...] the world as a whole, yet has become seemingly forgotten nearly entirely", let's wait until it has been remembered by reliable sources before we pay it attention here. -- Hoary (talk) 21:44, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's understandable about my self published nature, but you're unlikely to deny the fact that Professor James Fenwick discovered the film, and thus if my research is based on that discovery and valid, to deny entry is to allow false facts to perpetuate. I have many documents that I would like to submit with regards to the strange clandestine nature of this article, but I keep finding my images are blocked under various claims of dubious nature. These are simple, declassified documents from the State Department and the National Archives at Hyde Park with regards to the historical relevance of Eleanor Roosevelt's impacts on not just national but world affairs. NicholasMorrish (talk) 22:30, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
NicholasMorrish, please read Wikipedia:No original research. Either expand what you've written and have it published as a book (and not via "subsidized" publishing), or condense it and have it published as a journal article (and not in a predatory/sham journal). And then some editor unconnected with the author may choose to cite the published material in an article about this film. -- Hoary (talk) 23:24, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's fair, I wasn't aware of that and willingly admit I'm new to this. I will proceed to get properly published before pursuring citation request.
I am still on the fence about what to do about uploading images of relevance. My intentions are pure, these are public domain, and I think once you see these documents, it reinforces not just the claims of release date but also other stated claims of USIS wanting to avoid attribution. Here's the Department of State doc https://imgur.com/a/dyhprGN
and here's the National Archives release from Hyde Park https://imgur.com/a/n0KgTbb as well a screen shot I'd like to use from the WAY meeting https://imgur.com/a/RQDOv4N
How would I best upload these? NicholasMorrish (talk) 23:58, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

NicholasMorrish, Wikipedia has a very unfortunate way of encouraging people to upload what isn't theirs but to announce that it is theirs, and then to transfer it to Wikimedia Commons (which is where it should have been uploaded in the first place, if it should have been uploaded at all). So it's no surprise that your upload of c:File:World Asssembly of Youth 1952.jpg announces that you are the copyright holder; whereas, as you surely know very well, you are not. The first thing to do is to go there and change the claimed copyright status so that it no longer says that you are the copyright holder and instead says that it's in the public domain, for this or that specific reason (see c:Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United States). Once that's done, you can, I suppose, upload the screenshot with the same PD claim; though NB I may be making a mistake here. Please post questions about, or somehow related to, copyright to c:Commons:Village pump/Copyright. Not because it's bad manners (!) to do so here, but because if you do so there you are far more likely to get knowledgable and helpful responses. -- Hoary (talk) 00:36, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

NicholasMorrish, those Imgur files are unpublished primary internal government documents that have no good use on Wikipedia. Documents like that are the raw materials that historians analyze. Wikipedia editors working on historical topics summarize the published work of historians, not their own interpretations of raw documents. Cullen328 (talk) 01:00, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
But they're relevant to the when and where. It is not that they're meant to be further scrutinized by the historical community, I have already shared them with those knowledgeable on the topic and there is little to scrutinize further, however, without these documents, there is little to verify the date of events and film release as its existence has strangely completely disappeared from the social awareness of such ground breaking humanitarian events. Part of the veneer that delicately wraps this strange and unique instance in history is the odd occurrence that such a massive event happened, yet nearly nothing is seemingly known about it, other than from these few sources. Without them, it's like it never existed at all. Not even Cornell University seemingly discusses these events, which hosted the darn event! The only thing that exists on it appears to be a box under the Alexander M. Drummond papers. NicholasMorrish (talk) 01:31, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
NicholasMorrish, let me be perfectly clear: If, as you say, nearly nothing is seemingly known about it, then that is the very definition of something that does not belong on Wikipedia at this time. Wikipedia does not publish original research in any way, shape or form. Stating Part of the veneer that delicately wraps this strange and unique instance in history is the odd occurrence that such a massive event happened, yet nearly nothing is seemingly known about it, other than from these few sources is waving a red flag in front of experienced editors telling them, "do your very best to keep this inappropriate content out of the encyclopedia". Do you understand? Cullen328 (talk) 08:13, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So... if the producer(News of the Day) doesn't technically exist anymore... if I therefore give them authorship, yet there's no one to claim it, I haven't done anything wrong? NicholasMorrish (talk) 00:59, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It is perfectly OK to attribute authorship to people who have died and entities that no longer exist. Cullen328 (talk) 01:05, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This article needs additional citations for verification

I read through the verification guide and I'm wondering why an article I wrote has the more citations needed tag when there's about twenty inline reference from notable sources. Thank you all for your time, here's the article by the way https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/She_Code_Africa Hannydevelop (talk) 21:23, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Hannydevelop, and welcome to the Teahouse. Can you point out three (or more) of those 29 which meet all three of the requirements of reliability, independence, and significant coverage? (See WP:42 for more details).
Looking at the first few: source 1 has one sentence on SCA (not Significant coverage, and since it is a summary of Oyom's presentation, it is probably not independent of SCA).
2 is published by SCA, and so not independent. 3 is not independent. 4 is the same text as 1 (so it is misleading to present it as a separate citation). 5 seems to be all (or at least mostly) by Odom.
I'm not going any further through the list. As I say, it's up to you to present the sources which establish that SCA meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability. It might be helpful to remember that Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. Ukraine/russian crypto scams

Is there a way I can create a page on a crypto scam? I am particularly concerned about getting a story told on someone who has lootrd a ukraine bank Lilywb1 (talk) 22:54, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Lilywb1. Probably not. Wikipedia is not for "getting a story told" - if the story hasn't already been told, it doesn't belong in Wikipedia. It also sounds as if you might be here for RIGHTINGGREATWRONGS, which again it not what Wikipedia is for.
If you can find several (probably at least 3) different reliable sources each of which has significant coverage of the scam then it is possible that there could be an article summarising what those sources say. See WP:YFA. ColinFine (talk) 23:07, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
...but basically, if you want to inform someone about a scam, crypto-related or otherwise, your best bet is to notify a journalist about it who can do research and publish an article on their publication regarding this, instead of heading to Wikipedia which cannot do anything unless a journalist or two has covered it as stated above. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 01:41, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is revision done?

Hi, I have submitted 2 pages (one about 2 months ago) and one 6-7 weeks ago. I could see a lot of changes by other users, that's great I guess. How do I know are they still in the waiting list to be approved or disproved? Or can I myself move them into the other namespace Draft -> Article? I can see I am autoconfirmed so I can do it. Or should I not do anything and just wait few more months as this changes are more duties of senior authors? Best, Didiogiorgio (talk) 00:13, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Didiogiorgio: It would help if you would link to the drafts you are asking about. Draft:Christian_Barillot is currently waiting for a review after having been declined just two days ago. Draft:Alessandro_Crimi is not submitted for review but based on the edit history, your sources may not meet WP:RS. RudolfRed (talk) 00:35, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You can add the Wikicode that you can find at Template: Submit to that one, and then submit it. On the other hand, Draft:Christian Barillot was reviewed three days ago. The reviewer asked for some specific changes and offered to take another look once you made those changes. That draft was marked as "promising". It seems that you are not yet fully conversant with the procedures for creating articles. I suggest that you continue working with reviewers for a while, but this is optional. Thanks in advance!! Garteners (talk) 11:59, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Gartners: Wikipedia is always looking for high quality appropriately licensed photos, but it generally preferred that you upload such photos to Wikipedia's sister project Wikimedia Commons. You probably should, however, take a close look at c:Commons:Licensing, c:Commons:Derivative works, c:Commons:License revocation, c:Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia and c:Commons:Enforcing license terms before you start uploading anything just to make sure you understand what it means to upload your photos to Wikipedia or Commons. You may want your photos to be used in Wikipedia articles, but there's no 100% guarantee that such a thing will happen. If other members of the Wikipedia community feel that you're photos aren't improvements to the articles in question, you may have to establish a consensus in favor of using them on the relevant articles talk page. One other thing to consider is that even if the photos do end up being used in Wikipedia articles, there's no way to limit their reuse to only Wikipedia. Others will be able to freely download the photos and use them in pretty much any way they want without out needing to get your permission each time they want to do so as long as they comply with the terms of whatever copyright license you choose. I'm not trying to discourage you from uploading your photos, but you should understand what that entails and make sure it's something you want to do. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:20, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to solve this? This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independentof the subject (see the guidelines on the notability of people). Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). UserAV666, it's true that appropriate pictures usually improve an article, but they do not improve it in ways which reviewers take into account when they accept or decline the draft.
(It's a bit like having an MOT test on your car – the examiners test all sorts of things about the car's structural integrity, engine emissions, working components (like lights) and safe condition, but they do not care if it has a nice paint job.)
In the case of a non-free image included under the Fair use provision, only articles can have one – drafts must not, so such a picture can only be added after the draft has been passed as an article. {The poster formerly known as 87.91.230.195} 90.199.210.77 (talk) 13:41, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How do I add languages to my userpage? I never could add languages and now I give up from doing it myself so does anyone know how to do that?UserAV666 (talk) 13:17, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@UserAV666 The standard way to inform other users about the languages you speak is to use the Babel template. See the documentation at that link. This automatically adds your name to the category pages for users who have competence in the language, e.g. Category:User fr-5 See my own Userpage for an example. Submission Declined

I had a submission on a business declined stating the reference articles were not in-depth. They are coverage on some leading edge technology the company has built, such as integrations to Uber, etc. I have 23 references and think it as in-depth as other business pages I see on Wikipedia. How can that be fixed? WikTalker (talk) 13:51, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That is the page - thank you @Esowteric WikTalker (talk) 13:57, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
May I recommend having more well known sources (like for example abc) FusionSub (talk) 13:57, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you FusionSub - comparing the depth, I certainly have some similar coverage. As to sources, I have large local media sites, tech, and industry news sites. Any further insight here? WikTalker (talk) 14:22, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@FusionSub, whether a source is well-known or not is mostly irrelevant.
Hi @WikTalker, welcome to the Teahouse. The decline notice states that you need sources which are all of the following: in-depth, reliable, secondary, and strictly independent. If you pick the three sources which you think best meet those criteria and post them here, someone may evaluate them for you. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 14:23, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the insight - here are the links to 3 of the sources.

@WikTalker Every one of these sources is based on what Kirby said in an interview or directly at a conference. hence they are not WP:INDEPENDENT sources, since he is the company's founder. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:59, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And, of course, press releases via PRNewswire (and where used by others elsewhere) can be discounted. Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 15:07, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Esowteric. I think I do have a few of those in there I need to pull out. WikTalker (talk) 15:18, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Mike. Very hard for media to write about a company without wanting a quote - but will look to see if any such articles are out there on this company. WikTalker (talk) 15:16, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@WikTalker, it might help to review this section over at WP:ORGCRIT. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 15:21, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Just a query: I notice that the page User:WikTalker was deleted yesterday and that it reportedly had the same content as the current draft, created earlier that day. Does that mean that you have a personal connection to 365 Connect? Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 15:36, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Esowteric - I do not know why that page was deleted, I may have made an error in posting - I think I posted the same thing twice. I do know this company for the record, and thought they were very notable. WikTalker (talk) 15:41, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Where can I discuss this?

All gifs on the pages for the letters of the english alphabet are missing. Apparently they were removed because they were "ugly" Which sounds very bias. I thought they were perfectly fine honestly. All the other wikis use the gifs. Where can I talk about this? LeGoldenBoots (talk) 14:32, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

hi @LeGoldenBoots and welcome to the Teahouse! the editor who did this is Future Perfect at Sunrise, and you can discuss this at his talk page or at Talk:A (also pinging Future Perfect). happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 14:40, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, thank you. LeGoldenBoots (talk) 14:50, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
IMO they were not ugly (which is irrelevant) but they were utterly pointless, and of course unreferenced. Anyone is free to remove unreferenced material. Shantavira|feed me 15:40, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
