Description

Ball-and-stick model of the serotonin molecule, C10H12N2O.

Colour code:

  • Carbon, C: grey-black
  • Hydrogen, H: white
  • Nitrogen, N: blue
  • Oxygen, O: red

Structure based on that found in the salt serotonin hydrogen oxalate, determined by X-ray crystallography in Acta Chem. Scand. (1978) 32a, 267-270.

Model manipulated in CrystalMaker 8.3.

The structure of the serotonin cation from the above crystal structure was opened in Spartan Student 4.1, one hydrogen atom on the RNH3+ group was deleted, yielding the neutral serotonin molecule. Its structure was then refined with Hartree-Fock level of theory and the 3-21G basis set.
