Legality of Cannabis by U.S. Jurisdiction

“Awareness of cannabis as a drug”[edit]

I find it very difficult to believe that people in Bhutan were unaware of the psychoactive properties of cannabis until the year 1999 despite the plant’s prolific prevalence and adjacent countries (e.g. India) having been aware of the psychoactive effects for literally thousands of years.

The only explanation I can think of is that Bhutanese people were unaware of cannabis being a drug in the sense that synthetic pharmaceuticals are drugs because there was no public awareness of synthetic pharmaceuticals in Bhutan until the legalization of television.

It’s almost as if Bhutan is going along with United States pressure to criminalize cannabis in order to blame its abuse on television, but I’m only speculating. 162.254.170.161 (talk) 21:14, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
