    Making Edits[edit]

Hi, I tried making some simple edits, with more accuracy, to clean up a page for someone who authorized it (about himself) and we got a message from someone at Wikipedia, I think, that said he reverted what I wrote because he felt it was not constructive. This was a strange message because it was very constructive what we were writing: Completely factual and easier to read (less wordy). How does a total stranger have the authority to block what we're trying to write about a public figure who wants to simply edit his page through me? How can we complete the edit we want to make?

    Thank you.... Smkirke (talk) 02:48, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Smkirke: please read WP:COI. You can post your suggested edits to the article's talk page along with {{edit COI}}. Wikipedia goes by published sources, not by what the article subject wants. RudolfRed (talk) 02:57, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
     Courtesy link: Simon Kirke
Also, see MOS:LASTNAME. The style Wikipedia uses is to refer to subjects by their last name, not their first name as your edit did. RudolfRed (talk) 03:07, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Thank you for this information!
There was some inaccurate info we found there and wanted to clean it up a bit, and make it a little less wordy. Is that allowed? Smkirke (talk) 03:32, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Smkirke: WP:PSCOI is a simpler version of what RudolfRed suggested above. You might also find it easier to use the Wikipedia:Edit request wizard. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 03:56, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Rafale for Serbia[edit]

There is no valid confirmation about Rafale for Serbia. 77.221.3.82 (talk) 10:31, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, IP user, and welcome to the Teahouse. I have added a header for your question, but it is not clear what you are asking. I'm guessing this is about Rafale#Serbia. If so, please ask your question - making it clearer what you think should be changed - at Talk:Dassault Rafale. --ColinFine (talk) 10:47, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

article about christian marley/son of damian marley[edit]

hi i was wondering if anyone could make an article about christian marley for me Leander skibidi (talk) 10:33, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unless you are the subject, the best person to create an article about a topic you are interested in is you. It is a challenging process that you should learn about if you are interested in it; see Your First Article and the new user tutorial; also try editing some existing articles in areas that interest you, to learn about how things work here. 331dot (talk) 10:38, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Damian Marley is notable enough for an article, but Christian Marley probably isn't.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 10:39, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Belligerents[edit]

I recently saw "(possibly)" mentioned in this article, Sasanian–Kushan Wars. So I would like to ask if we are allowed to write "(possibly)" in the infobox when the sources used in the article does not mention such names? Or are we eligible to write "(possibly)" only if the names are mentioned as per the sources in the article?

As you can see, I am confused. I hope that someone may clear my doubts as soon as possible. Thank you. Jonharojjashi (talk) 12:42, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can see, the only circumstances where "(possibly)" could legitimately occur in an article is where either the cited sources disagree on a point, or one of the sources expresses uncertainty about it. In that case, the text should explain just how the sources disagree or are uncertain, and a summary (such as in an infobox) might say "{possibly)".
In Sasanian-Kushan Wars, neither Vasudeva I nor Kanishka II is even mentioned in the text: they should not then appear in the Infobox at all, never mind with "(possibly)" attached - that would appear to be original research by some editor. Rather than removing them, I have tagged them with {{citation needed}}. ColinFine (talk) 16:21, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to ban a user/ip from making edits to a page?[edit]

We have someone harassing our group and making malicious edits to our page. Is there any form of security or blocking that we can implement? Thank you! AlmightyBobino (talk) 14:20, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Images are not displaying[edit]

Hi, in the past few days I'm having an issue I never had before: Wikipdeia images are not displaying - while in Wikipedia websites (I tried several languages). When I search Google, the image appears, but then does not load when I enter the page. I don't have this problem in other websites. I tried in Chrome and Firefox, from a laptop and a PC, and have the same problem. In Firefox, this is the message I get when I right click an image and click on view image:

    "Your connection is not secure
The owner of upload.wikimedia.org has configured their website improperly. To protect your information from being stolen, Firefox has not connected to this website.
This site uses HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) to specify that Firefox may only connect to it securely. As a result, it is not possible to add an exception for this certificate."

    On Chrome, the message is:

    "Your connection is not private
Attackers might be trying to steal your information from upload.wikimedia.org (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards). Learn more
    NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID"

At the beginning, in this page I clicked on advanced and added an exception, and this loaded all the images on a page properly. But yesterday the exception button disappeared, and now I can't see any image. Please help me solve this issue! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A01:6500:A038:EB63:5864:3FE1:F86A:6D0E (talk) 16:10, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It sounds like some sort of proxy, VPN, or PUP is intercepting your traffic. Unfortunately, diagnosing and fixing this is beyond the scope of what Wikipedia can help you with. Q T C 16:13, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Notability[edit]

If I want to add on to an article about a somewhat obscure topic, what would be the guidelines on that. What information would I have to add for my changes to be considered notable. LilliC4553254 (talk) 18:32, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:N and more likely our general notability guidelines. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 18:45, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I missed that. We don't really make content itself "notable" or not. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 13:59, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Alright, thanks! LilliC4553254 (talk) 19:55, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@LilliC4553254: We can advise you better if you tell us what you want to add, and to which article. But in general, you need to cite a reliable source, and your addition needs to satisfy WP:UNDUE, WP:NPOV and WP:SYN. I was looking to add more infromation to the page for Ozma's The Doubble Donkey Disc . LilliC4553254 (talk) 19:55, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@LilliC4553254 Wikipedia guidance encourages us to be bold. As Andy noted, provided you can cite a reliable source, just go for it but be prepared to discuss your addition on the Talk Page of the article if anyone reverts. Try not to add WP:FANCRUFT. How do I create a new page eg. For a school[edit]

how do I create a new page eg. For a school EdricJ (talk) 19:00, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

EdricJ Creating a new article is the most difficult task to attempt on Wikipedia. It is highly recommended that you first gain experience and knowledge by editing existing articles in areas that interest you, as well as using the new user tutorial, both of which to learn how things work here and what is expected of article content. This will greatly increase your chances of success and reduce the chances you will be frustrated and angry about things that happen to your work that you don't understand.
If you still wish to proceed, you will first need to read Your First Article before you use the article wizard to create a draft. You will need to gather independent reliable sources that give the school significant coverage- not that just tell of the activities of the school or basic information- things that show how the school is notable as Wikipedia defines the term. 331dot (talk) 19:09, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, new here. We really were not sure how this works. All we heard was no other of this genre music video had been shot there before, so we thought we could submit that note of mention either on this one or a new article. Either or, this is great to know! Fb4817 (talk) 23:12, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The shooting of a music video is trivial and wouldn't confer any notability. Several drama series were shot at my school but it doesn't qualify for an article. See WP:NSCHOOL Shantavira|feed me 08:11, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How do I delete an article I created?[edit]

    Hello,

I created an article, Michael T. Martin, earlier today after checking that one did not exist. Later on during the day I saw that somebody had created an article, Michael Thomas Martin about 3 hours before I created mine. I merged my article into the other articled. So how can I get an administrator to delete my article from Wikipedia while keeping the other article?

    Thank you for your help.. Roberto221 (talk) 08:22, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Just edit and create a redirect. I'll do this now. Jim Killock (talk) 08:25, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Done. You can view the source of the redirect page (by following the link at the redirection notice on the page it is redirected to) to see how it is done: #REDIRECT [[Name of page]] Jim Killock (talk) 08:26, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the help but I rather delete the article in case somebody needs to use that name to create an article. Roberto221 (talk) 08:42, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If someone wants to create an article about a different Michael T. Martin, they can edit the redirect to do so(more than likely the redirect would be made a disambiguation page at that point). Right now it's better for the project for the redirect to be there. 331dot (talk) 08:51, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    makes sense Roberto221 (talk) 09:23, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have added him to Michael Martin.[1] It's the only Michael T. Martin for now so it can keep redirecting to him and not the disambiguation page. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:06, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

View on creating Jat clan system[edit]

There is a question from a new editor at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Language#VIEW ON CREATING JAT CLAN SYSTEM. Please could someone advise them, I think it is probably a Wikipedia:Contentious topic but I find the CT guidance confusing. TSventon (talk) 11:12, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Reference (book)[edit]

Hi, I added a new reference (book) within the carbonara page (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Carbonara&diff=prev&oldid=1218218795), but I don't know how to insert the right page (75); it currently links to "puttanesca". I took this source from the spaghetti alla puttanesca page. JacktheBrown (talk) 13:41, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Done, the easiest is to use visual editor and find the "Page Cited" field. Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 14:39, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cocobb8: no, unfortunately; by clicking on the link you will still be redirected to "puttanesca". JacktheBrown (talk) 14:59, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what you mean. Looking at the first source under bibliography, I don't see anything that, when clicked, redirects to puttanesca. Didn't you also want the page number added? Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 15:07, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cocobb8: I clicked on the link after your edit and nothing changed, I was still redirected to "puttanesca" page (in the book); please read this discussion: Bibliography. JacktheBrown (talk) 15:14, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I understand now, I thought you were talking about the puttanesca article. See TSventon's comment below for how to fix this. Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 15:18, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @JackkBrown:, when a Google books link ends in "&pg=PA68" it should point to page 68. You can change 68 to 75 to point to page 75. The links to individual pages may not work if Google changes the visibility of the book. TSventon (talk) 15:11, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have now understood how to do this, and will do the same on the pasta alla gricia page, changing the page number (update, 15:28: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pasta_alla_gricia&diff=prev&oldid=1218241053); thanks to TSventon and Trappist the monk (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Carbonara&diff=prev&oldid=1218238620) (and thanks to Cocobb8). Watching a user's contributions[edit]

So this is a question I have that I wanted to post before becoming an admin: Is there any way I can add a user's contributions to my watchlist, so I can watch when they make any edit? I'm asking because I've run into a few users where I need to wait before reporting them to see if they vandalize further, but it is tedious to keep reloading their contributions page, but would not to have their contributions in my watchlist. Thanks --- thetechie@wikimedia: ~/talk/ $ 22:42, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    @TheTechie: I don't think this is possible, due to concerns of WP:STALKING RudolfRed (talk) 01:19, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WP:POPUPS can give you a transient popup list of a user's contributions when you hover over certain username links. So you could have a list of links for your users of interest, and then run your mouse along to see who's done what lately. It doesn't have unified "latest edits" of them all, time-sorting, or "edits since I last checked" features. And the list of users would be publicly visible. How come i am always sitewide blocked and never partial blocked? @331dot: 204.2.36.253 (talk) 22:45, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your account's talk page should have an explanation of why you were blocked. If not, you should be able to engage with the administrator who blocked you on your user talk page. GoingBatty (talk) 03:43, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@204.2.36.253: Every time you post using another account while your primary account is still under block, you're lowering your chances of your primary account ever being unblocked. Even responding to the replies in this discussion is only making your situation worse, so don't. Read WP:UNBLOCK and follow the guidance contained therein. Correct the sentence of Closing Ceremony Athens 2004[edit]

Can you look and see if the sentence is correct of synopsis of the Closing Ceremony of the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics? I just put in joining tonight at thr Closing Ceremony, His Excellency the President of the Hellenic Republic Constantinos Stephanopoulos. Accompanied by Adjutant Officer to the President of the Hellenic Republic Air Force Colonel Georgios Dritsakos. Thus for example not "His Excellency the President of the Hellenic Republic" but instead "the President of Greece" (or even "the Greek President"). -- Hoary (talk) 12:28, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of 'British' descriptions and categories[edit]

There seems to be a long-standing and consistent movement to reallocate any person or anything away from being described as 'British' and towards 'Scottish', 'Welsh', 'English', and 'Northern Irish'. This applies to both in-article descriptions and to categories. Can someone point me to where this was discussed and agreed, so I can understand the arguments and justification? Masato.harada (talk) 07:35, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's quite straight forward: if a Scotsman does something good, he's Scottish, if he does something bad he's British; if an Englishman does something good he's British, if he does something bad he's English. It's not just Wikipedia. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 09:14, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have no idea what the consensus is (and I don't much care, though I am British, English, and a probationary Yorkshireman - I've only been here 32 years) but you'll find discussion at Wikipedia:British Isles Terminology task force/Manual of Style. ColinFine (talk) 09:40, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is a footnote at MOS:NATIONALITY, which says There is no categorical preference between describing a person as British rather than as English, Scottish, or Welsh. Decisions on which label to use should be determined through discussions and consensus. The label must not be changed arbitrarily. To come to a consensus, editors should consider how reliable sources refer to the subject, particularly UK reliable sources, and whether the subject has a preferred nationality by which they identify. You could also look at the archives of Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Biography. TSventon (talk) 10:36, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I've found a relevant discussion in Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Biography/2007-2008 archive: British nationality. It's pretty lengthy, and I've only skimmed it, but I don't see any conclusion which agrees to working through existing articles and categories and changing them from 'British' without a justification. My worry is that there is some nationalist agenda driving a hidden project to replace 'British' with a country name, without explicit discussion and agreement. Is there a current working group or interest group which might be interested/have a view? Masato.harada (talk) 14:10, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Masato.harada, you could ask at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Biography. There was an ANI discussion on Cornish/English/British a month ago at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive1150#Disruptive editing from Gwikor Frank. Unfortunately this question does lead to lengthy discussions. TSventon (talk) 15:10, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to link a Wikidata item?[edit]

I just created a redirect Henrietta Lange, which I copied exactly from the existing redirect Hetty Lange since they are two different names for the same character. The existing redirect (Hetty Lange) works and it says: "The Wikidata item linked to this page is Henrietta Lange (Q12316284)." But the new one (Henrietta Lange) is giving the message: "The Wikidata item linked to this page is (no entity). Error: no Wikidata item linked! Either link a Wikidata item or remove this template."
I just cannot see what is missing, to set up this link to Wikidata. Can somebody please explain what I need to do, to set up that link? Gronk Oz (talk) 10:32, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Gronk Oz: A Wikidata item can only list one page at each wiki. If you want it to be Henrietta Lange instead of Hetty Lange then click "Wikidata item" at the latter and edit the entry at Wikidata. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:48, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Two questions[edit]

    1. I know there is a way, but cannot quite recall how, to link one of several definitions at Wiktionary. Specifically, I would like to define the Algerian Ottoman council diwân (alternate spelling "divan") while confusing the reader as little as possible with images of furniture. Is there a way to keep the other definitions from appearing? I am also very open to any other suggestions that anyone may have for this. I do know about the syntax [:wikt:word|word].
    2. The nice folks at the WikiMedia Commons help desk said it was ok to upload local versions of their images as test edits but mentioned that it would be nice if I had any that were definitely not going to be used would be deleted. This does not seem to be mentioned as a use case at MfD however. How would I go about doing this, since I do now have some tidying up to do? Elinruby (talk) 11:59, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @Elinruby: Hi there!
    1. What is the URL of the Wiktionary page you want to link to?
    2. Does the process at Wikipedia:Guide to image deletion#Other concerns meet your needs?
    Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 14:42, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    1. wikt:divan#English; consensus seems to be that this is somewhat better for this purpose than the en-wiki article although I have not myself checked it in detail.
    2. I think so... these are images that came from Commons but are quite old and rather murky in thumbnails. So identical to commons image but with color or shadows or contrast tweaked. Does that sound right?
And thanks for the help, btw. While I have your attention, can I ask if I would be jeopardizing the "faithful reproduction" part of the copyright statement if I did this with an artwork? And would the age of the artwork matter? I would think so? So far I have only added an edited flag to the article itself but there are quite a number of murky engravings, lithographs and paintings in this adventure also, and everything is a minimum of 200 years old. Thank you for the brain power.
Incidentally, I figured out the answer to my image problem of the other day, if you are curious about that. Out of date browser on paranoid Linux distro. Must click the link to tell it I want to proceed even if it's unclear the link is secure lol Elinruby (talk) 15:43, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know my IP is blocked, but is not affected my account. i'm a PT Wiki and EN wiki editor here. Also i use Wikimedia Commons to upload my Brazilian's city media and others. I only edit with my account, not my IP for avoid false positive.

I edit Wikipedia with Android, my pc, iPhone XR. But i see my wifi setting in my iPhone, i see that's WPA/WPA2 (TKIP) is not safe My IP can change everything, not use VPN or proxy.

    Uploading a page on Wikipedia.org[edit]

For several years I have tried to have my page upload it to wikipedia.org and it has been very confusing, to lsay the least...so many different times in the past but, my students did not understand how to do use Wikipedia, I do not understand how to use lit. It is not as easy as it may seem to be. I paid a company called Wiki proficiency to create and upload my Wiki page and Although I did most of the proofreading and updating, they led me on and scammed me. Though, I did keep the updated page with links to different articles done, they never uploaded the page as promised. I would truly appreciate to have a volunteer be able to upload it to Wikipedia.org 47.148.121.67 (talk) 02:53, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Paid editing is generally unfavorably viewed on wikipedia. In addition there are general guidelines on what Wikipedia is, and isn't. It's also generally discouraged to write about yourself as it can lead to a myriad of other issues. Generally, if you're notable enough to meet the criteria for inclusion, someone will write a page about you. If you need help with editing Wikipedia, the Teahouse is a good place to start. We strongly discourage anybody paying anybody to edit Wikipedia; that's the very definition of paid editing. You were scammed by crooks. You won't find a lot of sympathy from many of us, because you should never pay to get an article about yourself in Wikipedia. There is no good reason for such a thing. Indeed, we advise that it may be sometimes be a bad thing to have an article here about yourself. --Orange Mike | Talk 03:53, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please see WP:SCAM; if you still have any email communication the scammers sent you, there is an address on WP:SCAM where you can forward it to for investigation. 331dot (talk) 07:52, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi IP 47.147.121.67. It does sound like you got scammed, especially if the company was telling you they were working with Wikipedia in some way since there are no companies offering paid editing services that are "officially recognized" by the Wikimedia Foundation. These companies are no different from you, me and anyone else in that they need to comply with relevant Wikipedia policies and guidelines if they want to create/edit Wikipedia content. I'm afraid that the company either knew what they were doing from the get-go and knowingly scammed you, or they promised you something that they thought they could deliver but found out later that they couldn't do. Anyway, I strongly suggest you take a look at Wikipedia:The answer to life, the universe, and everything, Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, Wikipedia:Autobiography, Wikipedia:Notability (people), Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing, Wikipedia:Ownership of content and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest before trying to proceed further. If after ready those pages you feel that (1) you clearly meet one of Wikipedia's notability guidelines and (2) you understand that you'll have no real editorial control over what's written about you on Wikipedia as long as what's written complies with relevant policies and guidelines and (3) you still want to have a Wikipedia article written about you, you can try working on a Wikipedia:Draft that you can submit to Wikipedia:Articles for creation for review once you think it's ready. An AfC reviewer will assess the draft and decide whether it satisfies Wikipedia's inclusion criteria. That's about the only thing anyone can surely say with respect to someone creating a Wikipedia article about you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:06, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
IP editor: if you want to have a biography here, you obviously are happy to be named. If you post here your real full name (and affiliation if referring to "students" means you are an academic), then experienced editors will be able to advise whether you are likely to be notable in the way we define that for academics and hence how to proceed. @Muhammad92786 You can't upload pictures into articles by drag-and-drop like you might do into an email program. Picture upload (usually as a file stored at our sister project Wikimedia Commons) is the first step, followed by incorporation of the file's name into the text of the article. See Help:Pictures for full details. You can ask back here if you need further advice. Note that it is simplest if the picture you want to use is your own work: something you took with your own camera. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:00, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Citing court cases[edit]

Is it acceptable to cite a criminal court case, even though it's a primary source? I was working on updating List of incidents at Walt Disney World, and wanted to add the results of a criminal case that hadn't been reported on anywhere else, so I just cited the court directly. This is Florida where court records are public record and easily accessible. –DMartin 15:34, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Court records are considered primary sources. If it's not being reported on, how do you know about it? If independent reliable sources are not reporting on a matter, it really shouldn't be on Wikipedia at all. Does the case have Disney as a party, or did the incident at issue merely occur there? 331dot (talk) 15:41, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The case had been reported on when charges were filed, but no updates on the case had been published, which is why I chose to cite the court directly. It seemed unethical(or at least unfair) to report that someone had been accused, but not state that they had plead not guilty and maintained their innocence. –DMartin 16:05, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Display Screen Settings[edit]

Is there a "Dark Mode" setting on Wikipedia's site? All my other applications, including Google, have this feature. I may be missing it. I've searched the site, which I believe should display this option. However, I'm not finding it, and even a Google search was unsuccessful. I'm confident I'm just overlooking it.

If you could point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. When I use other programs in "Dark Mode" and then switch to Wikipedia, it takes me several seconds to adjust to the bright white background. It's quite straining on my eyes, and I'm sure many others feel the same. This is why many sites are now offering this feature.

Adjusting my computer's "brightness" setting affects everything, which is not what I want.

Sudden flags on my entry about previously accepted content[edit]

    Greetings,

I am an award-winning journalist and nationally syndicated columnist. I hired an experienced Wikipedia writer to create a biographical entry about me in 2017, supplying him with my biographical information. The entry was reviewed by Wikipedia, approved, and posted in mid-2017. Since then, I have made minor edits -- mainly to add new major publications that had published my columns. These edits were immediately accepted and added without question. HOWEVER: A few days ago, I made a very simple addition to my entry, noting that the Boston Globe had also published one of my columns. I was shocked the next day to see two warning messages in huge letters: 1) "This biographical article is written like a resume; and 2) "a major contributor to this article appears to have a close connection with its subject."

I dispute both these claims: 1) Having helped many people write their resumes and having reviewed many more job applicants' resumes as an editor, I know for certain that this article bears little resemblance to a resume. I have received major awards as a writer and a journalist, and I can accurately assess the writing in this article. It is written like a news article that describes a subject's past, providing many more details and much more important context than a resume; 2) Adding the name of one newspaper does not make me "a major contributor." And reading several forums of Wikipedia users/writers, I see no prohibition against contributing to -- or even writing -- an autobiographical article.

I would be grateful if these issues could be addressed promptly. Thank you. James Rosen Blueboy567 (talk) 18:19, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I've never used the Talk page, but I will try to do so. Blueboy567 (talk) 19:07, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is simply adding one more newspaper to a list of newspapers that have published my articles considered an edit? Would it help if I link to my article as published in that newspaper? This is completely factual, completely noncontroversial, and involves no conflict of interest. Blueboy567 (talk) 19:12, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Blueboy567, please stop adding additional items to that list, unless the item is particularly noteworthy in some way. This is one reason we ask article subjects not to edit their own articles. Please make edit requests on the talk page. 57.140.16.57 (talk) 19:17, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @Blueboy567: Every time someone adds/changes/removes something from an article and clicks the "Publish changes" button, that's considered an edit. Adding information to an article about you, even if completely factual and non-controversial, can be considered a conflict of interest. Best to make an WP:Edit request on the talk page with a published reliable source. GoingBatty (talk) 19:18, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing) - I am curious to know why you thought the tags were inappropriate? Since 2020, the edit summaries clearly state "I added my work..." Does that not make the article subject to wp:COI scrutiny? Does continuously adding your own achievements to the article not render it unlike a CV?
In this post, @Blueboy567 says "I hired an experienced Wikipedia writer to create a biographical entry about me." Is that not wp:paid? Personally, when an article is written, and when the subject of the article is continuously editing it and hired someone to contribute/create it, do readers and editors not deserve to know "a major contributor to this article appears to have a close connection with its subject"?
All my tags were meant to do was create awareness and start a discussion on the talk page on the appropriate steps needed to correct the issue at hand. Would Template:Autobiography been more appropriate? The specific problems are difficult to discern because the article is mainly composed by a potentially a paid editor and subject.
I know you are powerful editor on the project and I trust your judgement. I don't think paid editing should be tolerated and its important to create records to document when it happens. When there is COI/UPE and the like, I want to make others aware. Without tagging this article we may have never known that this article was a product of paid editing. I'm amused at the thought of being a "powerful editor". As noted above, the article reads northing like a resume. As for {{COI}}, my edit summary has already invited you to read its documentation, which says in part "This tag is not generally used to notify readers that an article appears to be partially or wholly autobiographical... if you place this tag, you should promptly start a discussion on the article's talk page to explain what is non-neutral about the article. If you do not start [such] a discussion, any editor will be justified in removing the tag without warning." and "In order to be tagged, the article should have a specific, articulatable, fixable problem. Do not apply this tag simply because you suspect COI editing, or because there is or was a COI editor. COI editors can be added to the talk page using the template {{Connected contributor}}. ". I note that the latter is already in place. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:18, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Pigsonthewing, again, we would have never known outright that this article was a product paid editing without addressing the COI issues directly. I think there is value in that. I can appreciate that there needs to be a specific problem. But when there is years of COI editing across multiple IP accounts and a created account(s) purporting the be the subject, the specific, articulatable, fixable problem is the COI issues. The best I can do is start a discussion with the tag and in doing so alert other editors to help seek out solutions to look through the edits/article.
{{Connected contributor}}, doesn't negate the issues happening within the article itself, especially when the COI is mainly/lately through IP addresses. I appreciate you inviting me to read the COI documentation. You are much more well versed in the letter of law here, but I hope you can see I am acting in good faith and trying to improve the project. Happy to have more guidance in the future.
On the matter at hand, do you think Isingness is the paid editor in this scenario? I see that the user is already blocked. Or do you suspect another user? Classicwiki (talk) If you reply here, please ping me. 20:57, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Blueboy567: In you haven't reviewed it already, you may be interested in reading Wikipedia:Autobiography. GoingBatty (talk) 19:09, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Blueboy567: Looking at these statistics on the article, I see that the #1 author is the "experienced Wikipedia writer" you hired, with 81% percent. It seems that all the 2600/2601 IP addresses are edits by you, which total over 9%. It appears to me that you are in fact "a major contributor" to the article. Cross-wiki article queries[edit]

Is there a way to generate a list of Wikidata items (or corresponding Wikipedia articles) where the article on one Wikipedia is in a particular category and the article on another Wikipedia is in another particular category? Kk.urban (talk) 18:32, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would guess that the answer to this is more likely to be found over at Wikidata. It seems like something it should be able to do fairly easily. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 20:34, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

When do I need to use "links" and when do I need to use "citations"?[edit]

When writing a scientific article, we refer to other publications. How do I use references in a wikipedia pagina - should I use links or citations?

    Best, Wikicluck44 (talk) 18:35, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

External links should almost never occur inside the text of an article, unless they are in citations: see WP:EL.
Citations should contain bibliographical information, such as title, author, publisher, page, date: if there is a URL available that links to a legal copy of the source, then it is a good idea to include the link as an aid to a reader or reviewer; but in most cases, a link is not an essential part of a citation.
The purpose of a citation is to identify a reliable source for a specific piece of information in the article: nothing else. If a paper directly support a claim in the article, then cite that paper; but in any other case, don't.
Sometimes it is appropriate to link to other papers in an External links section. ColinFine (talk) 18:56, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

COI edit request backlog, and access paywalled financial publications[edit]

I'm helping clear the connected edit request backlog, and am starting to get pinged on my talk page as the backlog continues to grow. If anyone want to help, we can use it. I'm working on an essay with syntax tips for connected editors on how to make successful edit requests, based on rejections I've seen from other editors. Comments and suggestions are welcome. The latest ping request requires access to paywalled Bloomberg and Financial Times articles. I just signed up for JSTOR access to get some academic journals and books, but wonder if there's something similar for editors to use to access Bloomberg and the Financial Times? STEMinfo (talk) 20:12, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@STEMinfo: Are you able to view archived versions of the Bloomberg and Financial Times articles at the Internet Archive? GoingBatty (talk) 20:18, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@GoingBatty: Thanks for the tip and help. Searching this archive is new to me. I just went to the Internet Archive to try to find the first article listed as a source. A few hits came up with archived time stamps, but the result only shows the first two paragraphs, which is similar to what shows as the text gets fuzzy on the live paywalled page. It looks like the archive can't get past the paywall either. Are there any free library type subscriptions qualified editors can use? STEMinfo (talk) 20:34, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@STEMinfo Archive.is website sometimes has stuff others don't. The Bloomberg article there is this URL but it may not be very helpful as the extra amount turns out to have little content. You could try for the FT there. Mike Turnbull (talk) 20:49, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
.... and don't forget WP:RX. The folk there are very helpful. Mike Turnbull (talk) 20:52, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull: Bingo! The additional content is needed to source the amount the firm manages, which it does. Thanks! STEMinfo (talk) 20:55, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
