Taxonomy and references[edit]

Primate taxonomy is by no means fully known or agreed upon. The following references are currently being used for this Project. See the discussion for other possibilities.

  • Integrated Taxonomic Information System - an automated reference database of scientific and common names for species. More information is available here.
  • Mammal Diversity Database - an automated database of mammal taxonomy.
  • IUCN / SSC Primate Specialist Group - an updated list of scientific and common names from the IUCN Primate Specialist Group; as of 2019 chaired by the editors of Handbook of the Mammals of the World, Volume 3: Primates
  • Mittermeier, R.A., et al Handbook of the Mammals of the World, Volume 3: Primates, 1st Edition (Lynx Edicions, 2013), ISBN 9788496553897 - updated source for primate classification and information
  • Mammal Species of the World, 3rd edition (2005) - this is now one of the primary source for primate classification - use {{MSW3}} or one of its derivatives (such as {{MSW3 Primates}} or {{MSW3 Groves}}) in the reference section.
  • Mittermeier, R.A.; Louis, E.E.; Richardson, M.; Schwitzer, C.; et al. (2010). Lemurs of Madagascar. Illustrated by S.D. Nash (3rd ed.). Conservation International. ISBN 978-1-934151-23-5. OCLC 670545286. – The latest field guide to the Malagasy lemurs; includes 101 lemur taxa. Use {{LoM3}} for references.
  • Primate Taxonomy (Smithsonian Institution Press, 2001), Colin Groves (ISBN 156098872X) - formerly the primary source
  • Mikko's Phylogeny Archive, Primate node - particularly good for relationships among the extant and extinct primates, although some nomenclature differs from MSW3
  • Noel Rowe & Marc Myers, All the World's Primates (Pogonias Press, 2016), ISBN 9781940496061, another recent source for primate classification and information
