To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 03:06 on 5 April 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems, because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed, determined not to be an error, or the item has rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors with "In the news"[edit]

  • @Stephen: Any reason for this edit removing the earthquake's magnitude? It seems supported and relevant, but I don't want to wheel war. Sdkbtalk 15:28, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I support reinstating the magnitude and/or death toll, the current blurb is bland, prompting a "so what?" reaction. Brandmeistertalk 16:48, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Because there are multiple magnitude scales and for most people it’s a meaningless number other than bigger is worse. We quantify disasters typically in number of deaths or damage. We have this discussion regularly but as far as I recall we haven’t used a magnitude for a while. Stephen 17:47, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We can add something like "strong", with the death toll. The current wording doesn't convey immediate notability and why this particular earthquake was chosen. Brandmeistertalk 18:42, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I’d favour a policy discussion on a suitable talk page (i. e. not here) to resolve this as it has certainly come up before. Schwede66 18:47, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
for most people it’s a meaningless number: Having lived in an earthquake region, most people in those areas can gauge a 4 from a 5 from a 6 and a 7. I dont think the general press ever mentions a specific scale, certainly not in the headlines. —Bagumba (talk) 19:03, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Having lived through the Christchurch earthquakes, most offices had informal sweepstakes following aftershocks and many people could consistently get within 0.4 of a magnitude, with many also able to say which of the 3 fault lines had caused it. With 20,000 aftershocks, you get pretty good at it. Schwede66 20:16, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've just posted the 2024 Israeli bombing of the Iranian embassy in Damascus to ITN and made it the picture hook, and that left the earthquake hook looking rather bland. Hence, I've added rated "severe" to it. Say if you'd like that further improved. Schwede66 23:11, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Tweaked it a bit, the wording seemed a little out of order. But if everyone here prefers a moment magnitude rating just revert my removal of that, I'm not precious about it. Stephen 00:00, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
