Welcome to the 2024 WikiCup![edit]
Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2024 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor you should be able to advance to at least the second round, improving your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close on 31 January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), and Frostly (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. TM in citations[edit]
Greetings! Regarding Special:diff/1195720594: MOS:CONFORMTITLE says that titles of works should be cleaned up to conform to Wikipedia style guidelines; I interpret that to include titles of works in citations conforming to MOS:TMRULES. -- Beland (talk) 00:38, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
- I was writing a long answer, but look, we do not mess with the words of source titles (or quotes from them, etc) for the fact that the source article's original text is considered copyrighted material. Presence on Wikipedia in a limited capacity is fair use, but modification of the words (even if a "TM" symbol) isn't something you can do under fair use. Legally. Unless there's an explanation for why removing it is necessary ("the MOS told me so" isn't). Kingsif (talk) 04:10, 15 January 2024 (UTC)

hi, i am writing about a fairly unknown person. is that okay? --Thekingogog (talk) 01:26, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

The fact was ... that Martina Fernández plays football for Barcelona and studies part-time at a biomedical laboratory? You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Martina Fernández (footballer)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. RE: Updating league tables[edit]
Hello, it happens all the time, as soon as games finish the table gets update, you do not need to wait until the end of the match day to be over. I always put DATE (? of ? matches played) to make it clear that not all games have yet finished. Skyblueshaun (talk) 11:43, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
- First, you should reply in the thread where the conversation began, so that it can be easily followed. Second, maybe you do it all the time, but it is strongly discouraged. The actual league tables are not updated until the end of the matchday, and it is misleading to update after, say, the first game and suggest that a team was in X position on the table at any point when they never were (i.e. team A wins the first game on day 1 and goes top, you update, it looks like team A is topping the table, the rest of the games are played and they're much lower and only then does the actual league in question actually produce the first league table. Team A was never top, but you made Wikipedia say that). Kingsif (talk) 21:47, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

Hamraoui case - reference[edit]
Hi, thanks for your feedback. I'm still not sure why you removed the September 16th 2022 arrest of Diallo ("mise en examen" in French). I understand you don't want a chronological order, but the date is "legally" more serious than the first Diallo arrest. Does it have to do with "arrest =/= conviction"? For Molina, the issue is that some sources are from social media or YouTube. How do you reference a social media source? I understand they are not usable as a newspaper source. Jheronimus (talk) 13:53, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
- WP:NYPOST is not a reliable source, in general, and there are examples of them deliberately misleading with information about crimes to make people seem more or less guilty in a way that is sensationalist and/or fits NY Post's preferred narrative. Those examples relate to New York, but I have no confidence that they would be more diligent in ensuring accuracy when covering a story that isn't about the city their primary readership is actually familiar with. Kingsif (talk) 14:34, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
- Got it. It's a tabloid. If you need two solid sources: https://www.lemonde.fr/en/sports/article/2022/09/16/footballer-aminata-diallo-placed-in-custody-once-again-over-teammate-hamraoui-s-assault_5997128_9.html
- The other one is from the NYT and is already listed. Jheronimus (talk) 13:24, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
WikiCup 2024 February newsletter[edit]
The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.
Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:
- AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), with one FA on Hö'elün, two GAs on Mongolia-related articles, and two DYKs;
- Vami_IV (submissions), with one FA on Doom (2016 video game), one GA on Boundary Fire (2017), and 11 reviews;
- MaranoFan (submissions), with one FA on Holidays (Meghan Trainor song), a nine-article FT on 30 (album), and two DYKs;
- Skyshifter (submissions), with one FA on OneShot and one DYK;
- Sammi Brie (submissions), with five GAs and five DYKs on television and radio stations;
- voorts (submissions) and Elli (submissions), both with one FA and one DYK each.
As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Question from Patrus Masih (21:34, 12 February 2024)[edit]
Hi Kingsif. I'm a total newbie, writing my first article. Some of the guidance I read when I started out suggested that if an article already exists, I should contribute to that, rather than starting out on a new one. So, with some misgivings, I started adding to the short article on "Bible translations into Hindi and Urdu". Unfortunately I know almost nothing about Bible translations into Hindi - I can't even read the Devanagri script that Hindi is usually written in. I know quite a lot about Urdu translations. Already the article has become top-heavy with my Urdu material - and I'm probably less than one third the way through what needs to be said about Urdu translations. Though there are historical links between Urdu and Hindi, they are totally separate languages. There is minimal overlap of religious vocabulary - which is a major feature of the Bible. So really Hindi and Urdu should have their own articles (with some limited cross-referencing). I realise now that should have got advice before I started. What is now the best way forward? When I was starting I came across some info on dividing a Wikipedia article into two articles, but can now no longer find it. Or is another approach wiser? Thanks in advance for your help. --Patrus Masih (talk) 21:34, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
- I have worked on the same article and no, the article should not be split. As far as Christianity is concerned, there is much overlap in religious vocabulary and in fact, most early translations were in Hindustani (both in Devanagari and Nastaleeq). Please continue to work on the article with an inclusive approach and remember that additions should be referenced. Thanks, AnupamTalk 22:39, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, thank you for the question. I am not an expert on either language or their approach to Bible translations. Anupam seems to have relevant knowledge, and if I was you I would look to scholarly articles that are about the topic and see what they have to say on if the two language translations are similar enough to be covered in the same article. If you think there is still scope to split the article into two separate articles, I would seek advice from editors with more subject-based knowledge at perhaps WP:WikiProject Christianity - you can search for WikiProjects to seek advice from like you would other articles, by including the prefix in the search box. And feel free to ask any other questions! Kingsif (talk) 16:48, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
Hi Kingsif... I'm frankly not that intertested in becoming an "editor" of Wikipedia I saw a less than good illustration for an article and thought to change it. I only re named it. THe article is Parathesia and the illustration is the one labelled "Pins and needles" - just strikes me as a lame illustration of the feeling "pins and needles" --IcyRazer (talk) 22:44, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
- If you're asking how to change the image, first, nobody is going to do it for you if the reason is only "I thought it was lame", second, please be familiar with copyright law in your own country and the USA before uploading any images. Kingsif (talk) 00:03, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

I'm a Wikipedia editor and i have an account for over 6 days and have 92 edits but still I'm unable to move pages. Please help me --From14 (talk) 17:58, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
- I don't know that scope of what you're trying to do, but you might find something helpful at WP:PAGEMOVER Kingsif (talk) 19:38, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
- I'm just asking you that I am unable to move my Drafts articles to the Wikipedia Live Main Space.
- How is it possible? From14 (talk) 19:40, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
- If it is an WP:AfC draft, you need to submit it for review. If it isn't, there should be (on desktop) a "More" option near the top right, and in the dropdown there's a "Move" option. Within the form that follows, you shouldn't change the name - in the dropdown before the name, if you scroll to the top there will be "(Article)" as an option, and that's mainspace. Your WikiCup submission: 77th British Academy Film Awards[edit]
Hi Kingsif, thanks for participating in the WikiCup. You recently submitted 77th British Academy Film Awards for ITN points in the WikiCup, but you do not seem to have been a major contributor to the article (in fact, you do not seem to have edited the article at all). Per Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring, you need to have worked on the article significantly to receive points. Unfortunately, this is not eligible for points as a result. – Epicgenius (talk) 23:52, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
- Ah, thanks - I trust you to make any necessary edits (and thanks if you already have). Kingsif (talk) 00:16, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
- I was gonna ask to withdraw because I got into doing the WikiCup as personal editing motivation, but thinking about this submission and other things I might edit to submit, it has felt less fun recently. I want to just edit what I edit and if it meets WikiCup, it meets it, if it doesn't it doesn't, rather than worry about what does or doesn't before/during editing. This isn't that I'm unhappy that submission doesn't count, don't worry - more that I would rather not have to be thinking whether something will count or not when I am making ITN noms (etc.), and the reminder that maybe I do have to is a bit... not the spirit of my editing mindset at the moment. Anyway, I notice that today is the cut-off for the first round so I don't think I need to withdraw, but I thought I'd mention this anyway, say that I hope that it's back to being fun next year, but maybe (and I should probably suggest this at WikiCup talk) there could be a non-scoring tier of WikiCup introduced that is more focused on being fun. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter[edit]
The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.
The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:
- Generalissima (submissions), who has 916 points mostly from one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher), 15 GAs, and 16 DYKs on a variety of topics including New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures, in addition to seven reviews
- Vami_IV (submissions), who has 790 points from two FAs on Felix M. Warburg House and Doom (2016 video game), two GAs, one DYK, and 11 reviews
- AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who has 580 points from one FA on Hö'elün, two GAs on Mongolia-related articles, two DYKs, and five reviews
- Sammi Brie (submissions), who has 420 points mostly from nine GAs and seven DYKs on television and radio stations
- MaranoFan (submissions), who has 351 points from one FA on Holidays (Meghan Trainor song), a nine-article FT on 30 (album), and three DYKs
- Skyshifter (submissions), who has 345 points from one FA on OneShot, one DYK and two reviews
In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.
Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. This message is being sent to let you know of a request for a third opinion (3O) regarding a content dispute you have participated in. You are not required to participate, but you are both invited and encouraged to help this dispute come to a resolution. Please join us to help form a consensus. Thank you! This is the first time I've requested 3O, so I don't know what happens next; wait and see, I guess. Mathglot (talk) 05:07, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification for March 21[edit]

Did you know/Hall of Fame/Themed sets[edit]
I took a wikibreak. I noticed that the Women's series never got added to the Wikipedia:Did you know/Hall of Fame/Themed sets. I'm in the process of doing this. When I'm done, you can add this to your list of accomplishments, {{User DYK HoF}}. --evrik (talk) 23:19, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
AGF at 3O: comment on content, not on the contributor[edit]
Kingsif, as I've said before, I'm happy to go through the 3O process (or any other dispute resolution process) with you at the Catalan hatnote discussion, but I really must insist that you confine your Talk page comments to discussion about the content dispute itself, and avoid accusations of bad faith or indeed anything at all having to do with me or other editors. We have been through this once before, and I thought that discussion would have been sufficient to stop this personalization of content disputes and insinuations, but apparently not.
Maybe I need to mirror your comments back to you, to indicate specifically where I feel the locus of the problem is. Here is your comment of 17:52, 23 March (diff) at the § Third opinion discussion, augmented by strikeout type indicating wording that I believe is unrelated to the content dispute and which therefore should not be there:
The dispute stems from Mathglot having removed the acknowledgement that Catalan surnames (when written in full) are joined by i in the language-specific surname hatnote – ostensibly because they think it is inaccurate based on an English-language Wikipedia search, and for brevity – and then another user removed the hatnote from an article where both it and the acknowledgement of i were relevant, because of the change.
While I have asked for suggestions on improving the hatnote that do not have to say the i is common and which can be shorter, or even optional (addressing the concerns), Mathglot has shunned any attempt at discussion and instead simply tried to defend why they made the original edit and say it should stand. I do not know why they have refused to discuss other options even when I have outlined one and asked them explicitly to respond, but at least they have sought 3O. Kingsif (talk) 17:52, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
The problem here, is that most of your paragraph is not actually about the content of the dispute; the majority is about me, my actions, or my motivations, and none of those are relevant. If we are going to have a legitimate third opinion process, which I welcome, then it really has to be solely about the content dispute, and not anything else, least of all about me. If you are unable or unwilling to do this, I don't see how the 3O process can legitimately move forward. Worse, this is a repetition of the lack of good faith and PA issue that we've discussed before, and I really must insist that you cease such accusations and insinuations once, and for all. Please comment on the content, not on the contributor. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 20:35, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
- There is no lack of good faith, just an outlining of user behaviour - and I don't make insinuations, while also thanking you for the 3O, so can you cut out accusing me of stuff. Let us be clear: users cannot hide behind "comment on the content" when half the problem is indeed the behaviour of the user. There are times when it is appropriate to mention this. The discussion asked for the viewpoints of involved users as to the nature of the dispute, and the nature of the dispute is not content, it is you refusing to discuss content. How am I to explain that properly without mentioning you. Kingsif (talk) 21:10, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for adding this:
- the nature of the dispute is not content, it is you refusing to discuss content.
- That tells me concisely everything I need to know. Btw, just noticed that the 3O responder has bowed out, and relisted the discussion at WP:3O. Mathglot (talk) 21:56, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
- I don't wish to know what you are insinuating with
That tells me concisely everything I need to know
, if anything at all. It is genuinely, civilly, how I see this dispute. As noted, I have suggested alternative phrasings for the hatnote, I have explained that nobody wants an explanation of i, and you have not been receptive. We can request another 3O or we can discuss phrasing options; I think perhaps the responder backed out because the dispute is not a simple choice between one phrasing or another. I want to find a resolution and, perhaps this needs to be said outright, that is clearly not just deciding either the original phrasing or your phrasing is better - as it seems clear neither is the best (since you have questioned the former and myself the latter). And we want the best, right? Kingsif (talk) 22:03, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
- I don't wish to know what you are insinuating with
- Thank you for adding this:
- I am pinging @El C:, the first admin I could think of who is usually active around this time. El C, you can see my comment describing a dispute above. Mathglot is accusing, as you can also see, that this comment constitutes a personal attack and failure to AGF. I would like an impartial and experienced view on whether 1. my comment is uncivil in any way, and 2. it is fair for Mathglot to make such accusations, bearing in mind that improper accusations are considered uncivil themselves as they can discourage participation.
