Today several international organisations take part and cooperate. The ITIS logo is a work of the U.S. Federal Government.

ITIS var ursprungligen en organisation för främjande av samarbete mellan olika amerikanska federala myndigheter, med syftet att ge konsekvent och tillförlitlig information om taxonomi kring biologiska arter.
