Madras is an unincorporated community in Coweta County, in the U.S. state of Georgia.[1]
History[edit]
The railroad was extended to the site in 1849.[2] Early variant names were Powell's Station, Powellton, Powellton Station and Powellville.[1] This original name honored one Mr. Powell, a first settler.[3] In 1902, the current name, Madras, was adopted.[2] A post office called Powellville was established in 1871, and the post office's name was changed to Madras in 1902.[4]
The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the place in 1893 as the "Town of Powellville".[5]
